Preparation of status report and development of action plan is based on following hypothesis Coastal bioresource are under threat due to increasing anthropogenic activities Socio economic factors play a major role in conserving the coastal bio resources The project upon completion hopes to assess - the current status of the bio resources of selected coastal areas; and the dependence of human communities on local resources. It will also provide significant clues towards - conservation and sustainable utilization of bioresource in selected study sites. Subsequently, the project aims to develop strategies for conservation and enhancement of bioresources in a few selected villages in the study sites. To operate the present project, the sites were selected based on the ecological status of the region. Panda diversity but under severe threat and areas in need of rehabilitation and restoration The study was undertaken in these areas in a network mode. Institutions/organizations with prior experience of working in the selected sites were identified and a common framework was developed during a workshop conducted at MSSRF. The institutions and principal investigators for the preparation of the status report are given in the table. These studies were primarily based on the published literature supplemented by field visits, wherever necessary. The reports were discussed at a workshop conducted at Chennai and based on the inputs from experts, modified and final versions have been developed. We have received enthusiastic support from several government officials, local people and organizations during the preparation of this report. We are appreciative of their support and look forward for their continued cooperation for developing a site-specific action plan for these important regions for sustainable management and utilization of bioresources. I. Introduction Gulf of Kachchh * Marine bio-resources are quite different from their terrestrial counterparts. The concept to be applied for conservation and protection of the marine and coastal ecosystems altogether has a different approach. Unlike the terrestrial area, marine area is more sensitive and nearby activities tend to have the same or at times higher impact. Land being replaced by water, it is a difficult task to control the impact of activities that take place beyond the area limits. This makes it even more necessary to understand and comprehend the activities in the nearby area and in particular on the periphery. Gujarat covers a total land area of 196,024 km' (9.9% of Indian land area) (FSI, 1999). The agricultural area of the State is 95,000 kID' (Forest Statistics, 1998). It has a coastline of 1650 km, which is the longest among all the littoral States of the Country and is 21.9% of the Indian coastline of 7517 km. Its continental shelf occupies 165,000km' being 35.3% of the Indian continental shelf of 468,000 km' (Fisheries Statistics, 2000). The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is about 200,000 km' (9.9% of Indian EEZ). The coastline has two indentations, the Gulfs of Khambhat and Kachchh, and these together, cover around 60% of the coastline of the State. '* 'Kachchh' has been pronounced on spelt variously in different literature. This term is adapted (rom the Atlas-Orient Longman School Atlas, 1997 and for consistency we used the same throughout the report 1 Gulf of Kachchh - H.S. Singh, Prasanna Yennawar and B.H, Patel The literature available on the coastal area of India shows that the Gulf of Kachchh has been neglected since a longtime. There bas been a little information available in some reports but they cover only few aspects of the Gulf of Kachchh. Hence, there is a need to compile all the data available elsewhere and prepare status report on the bio-resources of the Gulf of Kachchh, which can give entire information at a glance. The current regime of the Gulf of Kachchh has been analysed by Srivastava & John (1977). They have given a brief description of how the currents prevailing in the gulf are controlled by various parameters like wind, tide, bathymetry, coastal configuration, density distribution, etc. The preparation of status report is carried out by the literature survey and refering the official publication of the Government. The annual reports of the Governmental Departments were also referred and some of the villages were also visited to collect the preliminary information. Mostly the report is based on secondary data but some of the information gathered during the study carried out by GEER Foundation has also been incorporated. The aim of the status report is also to identify the important biological resources in the Gulf of Kachchh and their present status. This identified resources and their present status can be useful to monitor it through the long term study .with observations on regular intervals as well as to analyse the pressure on the bio-resources.
