for the extraction of commercially important
product, the Aliginates. Over 'exploitation of this
weed cause remarkable decline the abundance.
Government should prepare the regulatory scheme
on the exploitation of algae and weeds from this
area. The harvesters should be given permit for
certain areas and exact produce should be kept in
record.
Vigilance in the protected area: Though, it is very
difficult to keep eye on all the areas because of
remoteness and un-accessibility, but the guards
and foresters should keep a check on atleast the
traffic from mainland, which goes regularly to this'
area. The local staff should be even provided with
boat facility. From the recent observation of our
study team, there sbould be proper' understanding
at the administrative level with Forest Guards,
Custom & Excise Guards and Coast Guards. Many
times it becomes debatable between tbem,
regarding who is governing the area.
Industrialization: Considering the growing
industrialization in the Gulf of Kachchh, it is very
important to involve the local regulatory body of
the Government. The impact assessment many
times done by the central agencies, which do not
have knowledge of local area and the report, is
submitted in a single visit or observation. Before
clearing any new industry, it important to take the
local authority into confidence.
Tourism: As such there is no tourism in this area.
It is recommended to promote tourism at various
places. But the impact must be studied before it
starts on commercial basis. The local authority of
MNP & S is presently running Nature Camps for
students of the local villages for the awareness of
marine life. The effort behind this is appreciable.
Salt works: Salt pans in the nearby area of Gulf
provides nesting grounds to many birds as well as
feeding area. Considering the expansions of salt
area in the vicinity of the Gulf, it is very important
to manage it properly. The seaward side of the salt

pan must be planted with mangroves and be
protected by prohibiting human entry in the area.
Keeping of pets in this area should be totally
banned as they are the main predators of birds as
well as their juveniles and eggs.
Nesting grounds for birds: Many islands in the Gulf
of Kachchh as well as the coastal area of
mainland are observed to be nesting grounds for
the birds. These area should be identified and
managed separately.
Nesting grounds for turtles: Few islands in the Gulf
of Kachchh as well the coastal areas are observed
to.be the nesting grounds for the sea turtles. These
areas should be identified and managed
separately.
Communal estabUshment on islands: On many of
islands fishermen established Darga or Pir for the
prey. Many times these Pirs are visited by nearby
population and make lot of disturbance to the
flora and fauna of there as well as leave lot of
garbage. Some of the recently built Pirs do not
have any historical or mythological origin. It just
to encroach the area over there. Hence, no new
communal establishment would be allowed in
remote areas.
Long term monitoring project: This is the first ever
effort to compile the status of bio-resources
available in the Gulf of Kachchh. But it's very
important to monitor it continuously after specific
intervals so that exact trend can be found out,
which ~ay be useful for management &
conservation. So it is strongly recommended to
have a long-term project for monitoring these
identified resources.
Marine biological station' The monitoring study
must accompanied with the research station
facility. So it is strongly recommended to develop a
marine biological station on Island, which is easily
accessible to remaining islands as well as
mainland. Many parameter analysis have to run
immediately after sampling. This is possible only if
the station is there.
