The categorised boat distribution in Marine
National Park & Sanctuary with comparison to the
State is shows that there were 1130 mechanised
and 1049 non-mechanised boats which were 17456
& 8819, respectively in State. Among other
subcategories, 134 trawl!ers, 534 gil!netters, 48
FRP lEB, 359 FRP OBM and 55 wooden OBM were
recorded.

Gulf of Kachchh
The details of numbers of gears used shows that
majority of the fish catch in this area depends
upon the gill net fishing. This is proved by, out of
the total 2,84,760 gears, 1,24,388 gill nets were
recorded. The other important contribution comes
from non-categorised gears which was 2,84,760.
Altogether, Marine National Park & Sanctuary
area has 21 landing stations, which have 3,577
fishermen families, 24,830 fishermen population,
5580 active fishermen, 1,535 fishing boats and
72494561 Kg fishing production.
There were total 40 fishing centres out of which 21
were in Marine National Park & Sanctuary, 16
inland and 3 out of the region. This shows that
4.5% of states fishing station were recorded in this
area. The total fishermen families were 4,906 out
of which 3,577 based on marine and 1,329 on
inland fishing which is 6.3% of State's fishermen
families. Similarly, 7.2% of State's fishermen
population were observed in this area which is
32,609. Out of this population, 16,847 male and
15,762 females were recorded. However, 24,830
(9.1% of total) were marine and 7,779 (4.5%) were
inland fishermen. The active fishermen population
in this area was recorded 6,962 which was 6.6% of
State. Out of this population, 5,358 (6.8% of State)
were full time fishermen and 1,150 (6.9% of State)
were engaged in part time fishing activities. Total
191 fishermen were engaged in marketing of fish,
169 in repairing of fishing nets and i96 in other
activities of fishing were recorded in this area.
The literacy trend of fishermen shows 3134 literate
fishermen in this area which was 1.9% of State.
Out of this population, 2,477 were male and 657
were female. The fishermen families with own
houses were recorded 4,906 in this area. The caste
wise category of the fishermen families shows that
there were 79 scheduled caste and 4,817 OBC
fishermen in this area. However, the population
records was 510 SC, 32,039 OBC and 60 others.
Regarding the skilled fishermen in this area, there
were 257 male and 58 female trained in various
activities of fishing.
f. Ornamentals :
Many of the local families are engaged in shell and
coral collection from the reef areas of the Gulf of
Kachchh to prepare them for ornamelltal use. In
Bet Dwarka and Dwarka, there are lot of stalls for
the sale of these products. As these are the
pilgrimage centre, visitors from outside buy it for
some mythological importance and use in
performing Pooja.
