among the GO's CFRI, State Forest Department
and State Department of Environment from both
Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are actively
involved, among the NGO's more than twenty five
are working on this conservation and management
of the lake. Most of the NGO's are working along
with the local communities. However there are no
dominant local groups involved in the process.
Some of the active organisations are given in the
Table 10 along with their addresses.
VIII. Future Prospects
There are five taluks from Andhra Pradesh and
two taluks in Tamil Nadu states surrounding the
Pulicat lake region. The indigenous community in
Gumidipundi and Ponneri taluks in Tamil Nadu
utilize the maximum aquatic bioresource of the
lake and survive on it. Demographic change in
these taluks will have maximum effect on the lake
bioresources. The literacy rate in this region is low
with extremely low technical education.
Strengthening this will enhance the income
generating activities and reduce the pressure on
the lake.
Attaining gender equity in population composition
is very important. Thc recent trend in male female
160
ratio in attaining one, which shows demographic
equity. When it comes to income generating
activities less than 20% of the female population is
involved. This indicates the need of female
empowerment through engendered livelihoods,
which will also lead the sustainable management
of bioresources of the lake.
More than 50% of the population earns annual
income of only rupees 6,000 per year, which is
much below the national poverty line. The
available livelihood activities in this region are
lopsided towards excessive harvest of the
resources of the lake. There is an urgent need to
diversify the livelihoods among the fisher folks,
like processing and market linkages in increase
the income of the region.
Mangrove vegetation, which is seen at the
northern end of the Pulict Lake, could be
propagated at other parts of the lake. Mangrove
roots can help in soil binding and thus prevent
erosion and also act as wind, flood shields and
breeding grounds for prawns. Above all mangrove
foliage can attract large water birds like egrets,
night herons, open bills and painted strokes to
nest and breed.
