Pulicat Lake V. Bioresource Profile ..,,;, Table 2 Timber bio-resource of the Pulicat Lake Bio-resources of the region could be broadly classified into wild and domesticated. The wild bio-resources constitute food, feed, fodder, ftrewood, timber, medicine, ornamentals etc: domesticated resources include crops, livestock, aquaculture, plantation etc. i. Wild bio-resources a. Terrestial- Timber, ornamentals and medicinal plants: Among the different wild bio-resources 12 species of ornamental plants (Table 1) were identified. Table 1. There are about 39 plant species (Table 3), which are identified for such uses. However wild aquatic bio-resources is the central point of livelihood in this system in which fishes and prawns form a major economic resource. Salt making and clam shells supplement the income of the local community. b. Aquatic Wild Bioresources: • Fishes: Among the 88 species of fish occurring in the lake most of them are marine and very few of them are fresh water fishes. The fresh water fishes constitute Perciformes, Clupeiformes, Mugiliformes, Atheriniformes and Tetraodontiformes species. However only eight 152 Sl.no local Name Botanical Name 1. The local fisher folk identify the following as economically valued species mullets, lates (Koduva) Lactarias (sudumbu) Polynemus (kala), Sillago (kilangan) Chanos, megalops, elops etc. The pre monsoon months were the most productive followed by summer, post monsoon and monsoon. Gross primary production of lake ranged from 312 to 2500 mg C/m'/day.Annual production of the lake was computed as 312 g C/m'/year (Kaliyamurthy, 1978). The average annual fish yield of the lake is 1214tones or 34.59 kglha (Anon, Annual reports of CIFRI, Barrackpore, 1969-1972), which is equivalent to 3.459 kg Clba (Kaliyamurthy, 1975) Zoo plankton .production of the southern sector of the lake was 1.4 to 2 times higher than that of the northern sector, which was also reflected in the
