Phil.harmonie, a new label from Berlin, was inspired by musicians from the
Berlin Philharmonic who were looking for a new label for their chamber
music recordings. The head of jazz label Jazzwerkstatt, Ulli Blobel, founded
Phil.harmonie with producer Walter Küssner, a violist at the Berlin
Philharmonic and a professor at the conservatory Hans Eisler. From unknown
Vivaldi compositions to Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale,” the label has released
a series of fantastic recordings and there are many interesting projects planned
for the future. Phil.harmonie comes to Allegro Classical via Codaex.

With performances “like jeweled light flooding the space” (Los Angeles Times),
Cappella Romana is a vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to combining
passion with scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of the
Christian East and West, with emphasis on early and contemporary music.
Founded in 1991, Cappella Romana’s name refers to the Medieval Greek
concept of the Roman oikoumene (“inhabited world”), which embraced
Rome and Western Europe, as well as the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople
(“New Rome”) and its Slavic commonwealth. Each program in some way
reflects the musical, cultural, and spiritual heritage of this ecumenical vision.

Founded by Bruno Procópio in 2006, independent record label Paraty gives
new vitality to the classical music recording industry. Paraty’s objective is to
promote dynamic young artists, most of whom are based in Paris and who
have successful budding careers. Paraty specializes in period instrument
recordings, covering a large span of musical history; it has also developed a
second specialty in keyboard music. Paraty’s most important accomplishment
to date was a Victoire de la Musique in 2010, the most prestigious award given
in France, for a CD of works by Mendelssohn on a Broadwood fortepiano
(1840) played by Cyril Huvé. Paraty comes to Allegro Classical via Codaex.

Every year, horn players in Saxony follow a centuries-old tradition by
playing a St. Hubert’s Mass in the church of Augustusburg Castle. In
this way, they remind themselves and their guests of nature’s decline
and winter’s approach in the progression of the seasons. They also
commemorate St. Hubert (656–727), the holy man who once traveled
a similar inward, spiritual journey. Today, he is the traditional patron
saint of the hunt.
Pi-hsien Chen: piano
J.S. BACH: 6 Partitas, BWV 825–830
Bach’s collection of Six Partitas titled “Clavierübung” represents the sum of
what was written for keyboard instruments before him. On this recording,
Pi-hsien Chen plays the two movements after the respective sarabandes
(Partitas IV and VI), based on the research of Kenneth Gilbert, who stringently
proved that the previous reverse order has been practiced due to the printing
at that time having regard to turning the pages
Pi-hsien Chen was born in Taiwan and came to Cologne at the age of nine.
In the subsequent year she was admitted to the piano class of Hans-Otto
Schmidt-Neuhaus at the Musikhochschule, where she passed her final exams
in 1970. She continued her studies with Hans Leygraf at the Musikhochschule
Hannover and visited master classes of Tatjana Nikolajewa, Geza Anda,
Wilhelm Kempff, and Claudio Arrau. She won the first prize of the ARD
International Piano Competition in Munich at the age of 21, and has
performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony
Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra,
and almost all German Radio Symphony Orchestras.

Avie introduces brilliant young guitarist Mattias Jacobsson who, on his debut album, invokes a guitar tradition originating with the
influential Spanish composer Francisco Tárrega. The repertoire explores Tárrega’s influences and legacy, from the inspiration that
Chopin had on his musical output through to his students Miguel Llobet and Emilio Pujol. Mattias has created a unique concept in the
guitar discography by juxtaposing Chopin transcriptions with Tárrega’s most Chopinesque works.
Juilliard-trained Mattias Jacobsson studied with Göran Söllscher and Sharon Isbin, among others. He has performed throughout Europe

Beethoven has always lain at the heart of François-Frédéric Guy’s
musical endeavors—from his first disc of the Hammerklavier Op. 106 on
Harmonia Mundi, which revealed him as one of the future great pianists
of his generation, to his set of the concertos conducted by Philippe
Jordan and a second version of the Hammerklavier. In 2008 the festival
Le Printemps des Arts de Monaco offered him the opportunity to perform
a complete cycle of the Beethoven sonatas over a series of concerts in a
single week, an experience repeated at the Cité de la Musique in Paris in
2009. A new complete cycle in concert, begun at the Arsenal de Metz in
December 2009, will be completed in 2012.

This new seven-disc box set from Alpha presents Schumann’s complete
chamber music with piano for the first time, played by one of the great
Schumann interpreters, who has been exploring this world with great success
since 2005: Eric Le Sage. The pianist is joined by outstanding musicians Paul
Meyer, Francois Salque, Franck Braley, Antoine Tamesit, and others, who enable
the listener to fully appreciate these masterful works written by genius of
German Romanticism.
Robert Schumann’s chamber compositions are undoubtedly among the most
important European works of the 19 th century. Schumann (1810–1856) was
the archetypal Romantic composer, a man with unbounded imagination
who mastered almost every genre of his time. His chamber music, which may
be regarded as an extension of his piano music, enabled him to explore the
construction of his works.

Radek Baborák, one of the most talented horn players in the world, organizes
his own horn ensemble in order to realize Bruckner’s sound world through his
own instrument, and succeeds in evoking a solemn, celestial sound.

Thomas Blondelle, who finished second in the prestigious Concours
Reine Elisabeth 2011, was chosen by the competition’s partner BNP
Paribas Fortis to record a song recital and give concerts on tour
throughout Belgium and elsewhere. This young tenor has an exceptional
vocal range. He is currently a soloist with the Deutsche Oper Berlin,
but he also appears at many international venues. Recent engagements
include his debut as Froh in a new production of Wagner’s Das
Rheingold at the Bavarian State Opera (February 2012). With pianist
Daniel Blumenthal—the ideal partner for any young singer—he presents
a program of humorous French and German art songs. This unusual,
witty recital has been put together very intelligently!

Following her much-talked-about sonata cycle, Mari Kodama
recorded the first two piano concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven with
her husband Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphony Orchestra

story can be heard on the latest release on the Berlin Classics label. It
begins with the joyful Triple Concerto in C major, in which the pianist

heartfelt trio intimacy. The next work is Beethoven’s Third Piano
Concerto, in the “tragic” key of C minor, which Kodama executes with

perfect harmony. The pugnacious merriment of the minor-key close
to the finale brings this CD, which has shown us every facet of the
Beethovenian cosmos, to a satisfying conclusion.

Composer and cellist Domenico Gabrielli, born in Bologna in 1659, only lived to be 31 years
old. He is a composer probably only familiar to cellists; his seven Ricercari for cello solo are the
first “predecessors” of Bach’s cello Suites, and his two cello sonatas and his Canon for two cellos
are among the earliest examples of their genre as well. Much less well-known is the fact that
Gabrielli was also a celebrated opera and oratorio composer, and a distinguished sacred music
composer, and published several trio sonatas and (posthumously) a volume of secular cantatas
for voice and basso continuo.

Mompou’s lifetime. Many of them came to light in 2008, when his
apartment was being cleared out and three folders were unearthed
filled with manuscripts containing his first attempts at composition.
Thanks to the support of the Frederic Mompou Foundation,
most of these scores have now been published. The rest of the
program comes from a smaller collection of material housed in the
Bibliotheca Nacional de Catalunya’s Mompou Collection.

American pianist Ivan Ilić has recorded his second CD for French label Paraty, entitled 22
Chopin Studies by Leopold Godowsky. Godowsky was a celebrity in his day: Artur Rubinstein
said that “it would take him 500 years” to acquire Godowsky’s technique. But following
Godowsky’s death in 1938, his compositions were largely ignored until the year 2000, when
super-virtuoso pianists such as Marc-André Hamelin and Boris Berezovsky began to record
and perform his works in concert. Ivan Ilić is the latest pianist to rise to the formidable
challenge. His album focuses on the 22 Studies for the left hand alone, considered among the
most difficult pieces ever written for the instrument.

Joaquín Turina belongs to a category of musicians, too few in number, who have left a mark
on the guitar repertoire. Instead of treating the instrument with disdain, he wrote for it with a
certain assiduity. Just as Kodaly was the first to use the open strings of the cello to great effect,
Turina rediscovered those of the guitar. Born in Toulouse in 1978, Sébastien Llinares joined
Cristian Marcia’s class at the Conservatoire Frédéric Chopin in Paris. In 2007–2008, he attracted
attention during the International Academy of Music of Cagliary, where he won a scholarship
given by the Zaleski Foundation.

It has been 200 years since the death of Jan Ladislav Dussek, a Czech composer and
contemporary of Mozart. He left Paris for London in 1789 and, in Spring 1791, he appeared
in a series of concerts, a number of which featured the young daughter of music publisher
Domenico Corri. In a concert on June 15 that year, the pair played a piano duet together; they
were married in September 1792. Sophia Corri was a singer, pianist, and harpist who became
known in her own right, and this CD includes compositions by both Jan and Sophia.

In 1975, Stockhausen wrote 12 little pieces, one about each of the signs of the Zodiac. Those
12 melodies, initially written for 12 music boxes, were among the instrumental building
blocks of another work, Musik im Bauch (Music in the Belly), which also involved six
percussionists and a sound projectionist. It was only later that Stockhausen decided to reuse
these 12 pieces, and to turn them into an autonomous work. On that occasion, he also edited
a score of the work under the title “Tierkreis.” Among the recordings of the piece already
available, this new version by Het Collectief and Capilla Flamenca is striking in its originality.

Johan Helmich Roman was the founder of Swedish music tradition at the beginning of the eighth
century. Like many other musicians of his time, he was also a violin and oboe player, and in his
compositions he mastered the new international idiom, acquired mostly during a London stay. Among
the trios that survived the Turku fire of 1827, this disc presents the six that best convey the variety and
intensity of Roman’s work. The original versions, for two violins, are arranged in different tunes for
two recorders and through bass, following a well-known practice customary until the first half of the
eighth century. This choice gives rise to a further interest about these compositions, and contributes
in spreading the knowledge of this author who figures very well in the European musical framework
usually associated with Handel and Italian authors like Albinoni and Geminiani.

A professor at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia from 1868, and founder of the music school of the same
name, Sgambati combined his teaching with his career as a pianist and composer. He was connected
to Liszt after being his student, and his famous residence in Piazza di Spagna was opened to visitors
including Debussy, Grieg, Liszt’s “Roman School,” and even Wagner, who recommended his Quintetti
to the publisher Schott. As with his two Sinfonie, his Concerto was composed between 1878 and 1880,
and was often performed by the composer himself. Born in 1981, Roberto Giordano received the
diploma at Ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris with a unanimous vote by the jury. He is
a regular guest of some of the most important stages and festivals in the world.

Morgan has become internationally known for her concerts, in which she accompanies herself on
the concert harp and the Celtic harp. She has performed in Japan, America, Canada, and Russia,
as well as in many European countries. Edward Witsenburg is the doyen of Dutch harpists, with a
career that extends over more than half a century. He continues the tradition set forth by celebrated
Dutch harpist Rosa Spier, who was famous for her expressive style of playing.

During his lifetime, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the most famous member of the Bach family,
as the writer of a treatise on the art of keyboard playing and as a prominent representative of

transcriptions of harpsichord concertos Bach made in Berlin in 1765; they were very probably

In early 1878, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky was seriously captivated with the idea of writing a cycle of
choruses to the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Despite his mixed views on religion, Tchaikovsky
was genuinely interested in the ceremony of orthodox service and ideas of Christianity. History has
demonstrated that Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is able to exist as both music for
divine service and a piece performed in concert. Thus, it was his experience of creating a liturgical
cycle that stimulated the development of author’s spiritual music in all of its diversity of meanings.

love for music was born as a result of the impression he received upon hearing

Along with Shostakovich’s Sixth and Prokofiev’s Fifth, Khachaturian’s
Symphony No. 2—composed in the years of the Great Patriotic War—was
inspired with genuine humanism and faith in the victory. The music
expresses the whole gamut of emotions that raged in the people’s hearts:
wrath, indignation, sorrow, and solemn lyricism that are replaced with a
festive, life-asserting mood in the finale.
This CD also includes fragments from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Gayane,
and a famous Adagio from the ballet Spartacus. The recording was
produced by Melodiya and conducted by the maestro himself. The author’s
performance is what makes this recording especially valuable!

TCHAIKOVSKY: The Voyevoda (complete opera)
The Voyevoda, Tchaikovsky’s first opera, was composed to the plot of
Alexandr Ostrovsky’s comedy A Dream on the Volga. The playwright
planned to write the libretto himself, but the two men soon found
themselves embroiled in a creative disagreement, and Tchaikovsky
had to finish the libretto on his own. Tchaikovsky resumed his work
in late October 1867 at the instance of singer Alexandra Menshikova,
performer of the role of Marya Vlasyevna, who planned to showcase
the opera at her benefit. In July 1868, the opera was completed. It was
premiered on October 30, 1869 at the Bolshoi Theatre, and was very
well received by the audience.

Borodin’s Symphony No. 1, epic in scope and Russian by nature, bears the genuine
symphonism of the development of the major thematic grain. It took a long time for him to
write Symphony No. 2, whose premiere performance took place in 1877. He began to work on
the Third Symphony in Winter 1883, and the work continued up to the end of his life. He often
played music of the Symphony for his friends, but he didn’t write it down and unfortunately
it remained unfinished. Now we can listen to it, thanks to A. Glazunov, who remembered the
author’s performing of the first movement of the Symphony and used Borodin’s Scherzo,
intended initially for a Quartet, for the second movement according to Borodin’s will.

Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865–1936) was a Russian composer, conductor, and
public personality. In his works, Glazunov developed the traditions established by the composers
of The Five, as well as the aesthetic principles of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, thus combining the two
foundations of the Russian music—lyric drama and lyric epic. Symphonic compositions of
various genres, from miniatures to symphonies, are the core of Glazunov’s musical legacy. This
program features such symphonic fantasias as The Forest and The Sea, performed by the USSR
State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by the celebrated Evgeny Svetlanov.
