part of <strong>Indonesia</strong> is compounded by the fact that esoteric Buddhism <strong>and</strong> Hinduism<br />

can be difficult to differentiate, even in India. Rather than thinking of<br />

the religion of Java <strong>and</strong> Sumatra during the thirteenth <strong>and</strong> fourteenth centuries<br />

as Hindu or <strong>Buddhist</strong>, some scholars posit that it would be better categorized<br />

as tantric. Tantric religious practice placed great emphasis on the use of<br />

rituals, meditation, <strong>and</strong> other tools in the quest for immediate salvation.<br />

In contrast to Java, the majority of ancient remains found in Sumatra are<br />

<strong>Buddhist</strong>. But far fewer Sumatran sculptures have been unearthed, <strong>and</strong> much<br />

less effort has been spent on the excavation of archaeological sites. All of the<br />
