In The Castle <strong>of</strong> Adventure (1946), Jack<br />

enters the Scottish castle via the chilly and<br />

claustrophobic underground stream, but the<br />

other children fail to notice that he's wet.<br />

A mystery within a mystery, we can call it.<br />

Chapter 23 -- Girls, Too!<br />

The African waterfall discovery would be echoed in The<br />

Valley <strong>of</strong> Adventure (1947) set in Austria. Two entrances<br />

are discovered into the mountain: a rock that pivots open<br />

and the cave from where the river escapes as a waterfall.<br />

Fortunately Jack, Philip, Dinah and Lucy-Ann have a<br />

treasure map.<br />

In The Secret <strong>of</strong> Killimooin (1943),<br />

Peggy, Nora, Jack, Mike, Paul, Ranni<br />

and Pilescu see the Secret Forest from<br />

their blue and silver plane. There are<br />

no passes through the mountains and<br />

yet Jack sees smoke rising from the<br />

trees.<br />

The only way in is via an underground<br />

river, which involves evading robbers,<br />

and that's as much <strong>of</strong> the plot as we'll<br />

recount.<br />

Jack spoke at last. Ranni, where do you suppose this river goes to? It must go somewhere. If<br />

it was penned up in this valley, it would make a simply enormous lake, and it doesn't do that, or<br />

we should have seen it from the air, when we flew over.<br />

Ranni sat and thought. It must go somewhere, <strong>of</strong> course, he said. Maybe it finds its way<br />

underground, as it did in the mountain. You think perhaps it would be a good idea to follow the<br />
