The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level score rates text on a U.S. grade-school level, based on<br />

sentence length and syllables/word, but not on vocabulary. An 8.0 means that an eighth grader<br />

can understand the document. When it comes to underground rivers in English fiction, only Poe<br />

requires the pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>of</strong> high school graduate. Joyce's 4.1 seems inexplicable until we realize<br />

that his short words are sufficient to tax our comprehension.<br />

Acclaimed as these authors may be, however, none demonstrates much hydrologic imagination.<br />

Chapters 19-25 consider writers <strong>of</strong> perhaps less literary pedigree, but more creativity regarding<br />

waters below.<br />
