Seismic Coring
Amir Abo El Rous, Mohamed Abd El-Rahman
Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt
Abstract Seismic coring is a 3-D land seismic reflection acquisition technique that has an
arrangement of source and receivers which differs from the currently used acquisition techniques.
This unique arrangement of the source and receivers allows better and easier interpretation
of the subsurface structures. The layout of this technique differs from previous 3-D acquisition
techniques, one source is used and is placed in the center of the array, the geophones are then
placed on successive circles and the radius of each circle increases gradually from the center till
the last receiver line with multiples of the first of the first circle. The array consists of straight
receiver lines arranged in a radial manner from the center of the layout. The distance between
two successive geophones on the same receiver line is constant while the angular distance
between two receiver lines is variable. The final data acquired from this geophone arrangement
would represent a cylindrical section of the subsurface ground.
