SOFTWARE
PFAST (Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit): This prototype package for
material flow analysis and design of facility layouts contains an integrated library of graph theory
and syntactic pattern recognition algorithms that have helped to computerize the manual methods
of Production Flow Analysis (PFA). Funding for software development has been provided
primarily by the National Science Foundation. Considerable literature on PFAST (papers,
technical reports, case studies, white papers, presentations, etc.) can be found at http://wwwiwse.ohio-state.edu/~FMPF/irani.html.
Additional downloadable literature on the following
research topics is regularly posted to this site: (1) Next Generation Factory Layouts, (2) Facility
Layout: New Ideas and Methods for Research and Practice, (3) Group Technology and Cellular
Manufacturing Systems, and (4) Industrial Engineering Studies on Lean Manufacturing. The
website offers the Be-Lean PFAST zero-cost online data analysis service to small and mediumsized
jobshops that are undertaking a major facility re-layout initiative.
