Kevin L. Weiberg
Commissioner
Kevin L. Weiberg was selected as
the second Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference
on Oct. 8, 1998, and officially began his duties on
Dec. 4, 1998.
Under his leadership the Big 12 is regarded
as one of the nation’s top conferences and has
made solid progress in areas of national competitive
success and television exposure, conference
championships, and football bowl agreements. In
his tenure, the conference has also implemented a
firm fiscal policy and continues to explore avenues
to expand revenues. For the 2003-04 year, the Big 12 distributed a record
$101 million to its member institutions, surpassing the previous high of
$89 million from the 2002-03 academic year. The $12 million increase is
the largest from one year to the next in the eight-year history of the Big 12
and nearly doubles the first allocation of $54 million in the conference’s
inaugural year of 1996-97.
Weiberg continues to play a national leadership role in collegiate
athletics. On July 1, 2004, he begins a two-year term as coordinator of the
Bowl Championship Series. He previously served a three-year term on
the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and completed a twoyear
tenure as chair of the Division I-A Collegiate Commissioners’ Association.
Weiberg has renewed and enhanced the Conference’s commitment to
student-athlete academic performance and has revised its policies in the
areas of sportsmanship and rules compliance. He has been instrumental in
initiating the Group of Six Conference reform discussions which has helped
produce significant momentum within the NCAA system for national
academic reform.
During Weiberg’s tenure a number of Big 12 sports have achieved
national success. Since 1998, 17 NCAA championships have been won
by conference teams. The conference has had an unprecedented seven
men’s and women’s basketball teams advance to their respective Final
Fours in the past three seasons. The Big 12 also has sent eight teams to
BCS bowls in the previous six seasons. In 2003-04, the league reaped
many benefits with two NCAA titles, two BCS football teams, one team
in the men’s Final Four, and one team each in the Women’s College World
Series and the College World Series.
Prior to joining the Big 12 Conference, Weiberg worked in conference
operations for almost 10 years at the Big Ten Conference, beginning as
Associate Commissioner/Chief Operations Officer before being promoted
to Deputy Commissioner.
His professional career began with a 1979-80 post as Sports Information
Director at Wayne State (Neb.) College. Weiberg moved to Wichita
State University from 1980-87. He was Sports Information Director at
WSU from 1980-83, Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing/Fund
Raising from 1983-86, and became Associate Director of Athletics in
1986-87. Weiberg then served as Associate Director of Athletics at the
University of Maryland from 1987-89.
The Anthony, Kan., native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
Education from Kansas State University in 1978 and Master of Science
degree in Athletics Administration from Western Illinois University in
1979.
Born July 7, 1956, Weiberg is married to the former Susan K. Latta
(August 12, 1976), and they have three children: daughters Erika (18),
Jenna (15) and son Garrett (13).
