HOMESTEADS<br />

What will remain from this struggle is an idea. What spreads and will<br />

spread from the determination to have a New Europe is an idea: the idea<br />

of a home for every family in the country. The idea that every family in<br />

the country shall have a sane house, and that means a house well built,<br />

with no breeding space for tuberculosis bugs. I have seen the details of<br />

some of these houses. It means that every family’s house will have land<br />

enough, fields enough to support the family. It means that these houses<br />

will not be burdened with mortgages. They will be inalienable, and<br />

indivisible. The eldest son if he likes, or at any rate one son or daughter<br />

will keep the farm, but above all the farmer will be guaranteed a sale for<br />

his crop AT A PRICE that will cover his needs.<br />

You may have heard that Andy Jackson OPENED the American lands to<br />

the settlers. As against John Quincy Adams who had what might be<br />

called a more communist idea, not that he was read, but he wanted at<br />

least some land reserved to the nation and its proceeds used for schools,<br />

and more highfalutin’ branches of education. He was “out of time.”<br />

Jackson beat him. Jackson’s policy was a bit sketchy. American<br />

homesteads in great part passed into great estates very quickly grazing in<br />

place of farms etc , etc. My grandmother and great grandmother lived on<br />

claims, land claims. The boys of 20 in New York now know very little of
