CLASS 1 EUROINVENT 2010 CLASA 1
organic total (40%).
Persistent organic pollutants are toxic substances that exhibit
adverse effects upon the health of ecosystems, wildlife and humans.
The greatest part of these pollutants is released into the aquatic
environment and is finally incorporated into the sediments. The
sediments may act, in their turn, as primary source of contaminants
to the food chains, when sediment-associated POPs is characterized
by high bioavailability. Lately, there were developed various
methods and models to assess the ecological and health risk induced
by POPs, such as: event tree analysis, quantitative risk analyses,
mathematic methods and probabilistic modeling. Nowadays, the
trend is to apply integrated methods for environmental impact and
risk assessment. Thus, a new integrated method for assessing the
Description impact and associated risk induced in the environment by pollution
EN with POPs was developed as a combination between two methods:
global pollution index and matrix of importance scale. An algorithm
developed as software (SAB) can be applied to automatically
quantify the environmental impacts and risks that arise from
different situations. This new method has the advantages that it is
very easy to be used by non environmental experts; it calculates the
impacts and risks, correlated with measured concentrations of
quality indicators for environmental component, considered
representative in assessment process; its subjectivity is removed
applying mathematical steps (SAB). Also, the lack of experience of
evaluator doesn’t influence the evaluation results that will reflect
the real situation from the evaluated site, where the industrial
activities are performed.
