Introduction 

Thanks to idyllic beaches, characteristic little towns directely on the sea like Vieste and Peschici and 

wonderful Tremiti islands archipelago, Gargano is much better known as a holiday destination than as 

a national park. Only few people know that this territory, thanks to its distinctive morphology and its 

ancient history, is also one of the richest Italian region for variety of habitats. 

Rarely in the world, in fact, in a relatively restricted region, one can find such a diversity of fauna and 

flora with examples, in some cases, of rare species like the Monte Sacro orchids. 

Furthermore, some steps out of the tourist beaten tracks, Gargano host its visitors in a true time travel 

through its rich traditions and its millennia-long history. 

Instead of exhausting the many possibilities that hiking has to offer in the Gargano peninsular, in this 

guide we have chosen just five itineraries of particular historical and natural interest. 

Itineraries have different lengths (within a minimum of 10 km to a maximum of 18 km) and, most of 

them, are also suitable for beginners. 

To hike them and describe them in this guide, we took advantage of our expert guides who have been 

walking the trails in our National Park for many years. 

Our ultimate purpose is to give the visitors the possibility to fully enjoy our beloved National Park with 

its nature, culture and ancient traditions.

Climate and best time to travel 

Even if each area of National Park has its distinguishing weather trend, it can be said that Gargano climate 

is typical Mediterranean, characterized by warm to hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. 

Maximum rainfalls, during winter and autumn, are concentrated on the northernmost areas, on valleys 

and on the inlands. Summer is usually quite dry and without any significant precipitation. 

Also if they can vary between different areas in the National Park, temperatures are generally moderate. 

In some rare case, especially inland, they fall below zero during winter and they range from mild to 

38-40 degrees in the summer. 

So, considering the above-mentioned weather aspects, periods from March to early July and from beginning 

of September to the middle of November are the best months for trekking in Gargano. 

Apart from the period choosed for an excursion in the National Park, it makes sense to be conscientious 

about bringing hiking boots and rainwear along for safety and comfort while in the natural world.

Itineraries 

Even though this will sound trite it is suggested, before approching any of the following routes, to 

bring an adequate quantity of water (depending from air temperature, humidity and individual physical 

condition) rainwear, because rain must always be considered a possibility, sunscreen and sun hat, good 

hiking boots and an adequate quantity of food because the importance of eating well during a hike 

shouldn’t be underestimated.

1 

Path of mules and pastures 

(from Ischitella to Vico del Gargano) 

Scenic trekking that connect two of the most characteristic towns in Gargano: Ischitella and Vico del 

Gargano. Through the Romandato torrent bed, Monte Civita and green forest, this hike is an opportunity 

to appreciate variety of National Park vegetation. Walking trough it, will be possible to see figs, 

carobs and cherry trees as well as typical Mediterranean vegetation like olives trees, myrtle, etc. 

Starting point: Downhill asphalt road on the 180 degree turn after the 142 house number, on the SP 51 

from Ischitella to Varano lake. 

Itinerary length: about 15 km 

Max slope: 550 meters (Casa Forestale) 

Difficulty: easy/medium 

It is suggested to reach Ischitella by car, parking it on the SP 51 near the town and then walk for about 

1.5 km up to the starting point. To reach Ischitella from Vico, once at the end of the trekking, there are 

several buses (sporadic in the week-end) connecting the two towns.

For buses timetable check Table 1 in “Transport and local buses” chapter. 

After 100 meters on the downhill road turn on the descending road on the left. Next to a spring with 

drinking trough, take the white road that gently goes uphill and continue keeping the old church ruin 

on the right. Take the path near the church and reach the bed of Romondato torrent. Keep left walking 

up along the torrent bed for a short distance and then take the path on the left that bring on an old asphalt 

road. Continue on the left up to Case Masella and, immediately after, turn on the path on the left. 

Go up keeping left up to a steep stretch that bring on the top of Monte La Tribuna. Continue on the top 

of the mountain alongside a fence (do not take right after cement pickets end). 

After climbing and descending a number of times, the path lead into a wood (do not take the path 

that goes down to the left) and then reaches Casa Forestale (old ruin of rural farmhouse). Keep the 

farmhouse on the right and, after some hundred meters, take left and pass through the fence gate. 

Keep descending and walk out of the wood up to reach a wider path. Keep descending on the left up 

to reach the torrent bed again and walk on it in Vico del Gargano direction. At the next cross, looking 

toward Ischitella and the valley bottom, continue on the right going up and take right at the next cross 

too, heading to the small pinewood under Vico del Gargano. Reach a white road beside the pinewood 

and, crossing a drinking trough, reach an asphalt road that bring, after about 1 km, to Vico del Gargano 

town.

Path of forest and sea 

(from Vico del Gargano to Peschici) 

An easy walk that descend for almost the 90% of the itinerary, very panoramic on the sea, that from 

Vico lead on the coast near Peschici. 

Starting point: Coming from Vico on the SP 528, early before a right turn take the descending path on 

the left at km 14,5. 


Max slope: 580 meters (at starting point – Loc. Il Parchetto) 

Difficulty: easy. 

It is suggested to reach Vico by car, parking it on Via Giovanni Falcone nearby the crossing with SP 528 

and then reach the starting point, at about 5 km distance, by walk . To reach Vico from Peschici, once at 

the end of the itinerary, there are several buses (sporadic in the week-end) connecting the two towns.

It´s a very easy route. Just keep the main path avoiding every turn right and left up to the SS 89 at 3,5 

km distance from Peschici. Path offers a scenic sea view and a nice view of Vico town, as well as old 

characteristic “Masserie” (farms).

Femminamorta 

(from piscina Romanello to Vieste Pizzomunno) 

A wonderful scenic route through rich variety of typically Mediterranean vegetation and, in particular, 

that of Gargano National Park. 

From Oaks, Maples and Holms wood, path descends into a landscape made of pasture lands and old 

farmhouses. Then, olive cultivations fill gradually the horizon while approaching Vieste town. 

Path always descends and offers very scenic views. 

Starting point: At km 123,150 on the SS 89 that connect Vieste with Mattinata. 


Max slope: 610 meters (at starting point – Loc. Torre Sagro) 


It is suggested to reach Vieste by car, parking it near P.le Manzoni and take a bus up to the starting 

point.

Bus that drives from Vieste to Mattinata on the SS 89 has a stop in Torre Sagro area between 122 and 

123 km. Anyway, be sure to let the driver know you wish to get off the bus, because it does not always 

stop at every designated stop. 

Keep on the SS 89 in Mattinata direction up to a path (with cement base for the first 15 meters) on the 

left following indications for Monte Peloso and Vieste. Keep left after Piscina Romanello and, at next 

cross, take right. After Monte Peloso take left up to an asphalt road. Ignore a left turn that bring to a 

quarry and rich, after about 1 km, L.mare E. Mattei and then Vieste.

Tuppo la Neve 

(from Monte S. Angelo and back) 

Scenic route with view on Manfredonia valley and on Apulia table land. Will be interesting to see typical 

terraced grooves of figs trees and almond trees. On the way it´s also possible to visit old abandoned, or 

in some case still active, farmhouses. 

Starting point: Town of Monte S. Angelo, on SS 272 near Via dei Grimaldi. 


Max slope: 800 meters (at starting point – M. S. Angelo) 

Difficulty: easy/medium. 

It is suggested to park, when coming by car, near Hotel Palace S. Michele. If coming by bus, there are 

several connection between M. S. Angelo and other towns in Gargano.

On the SS 272, shortly before the crossing with SP 56 heading to S. Maria di Pulsano, go down on Via 

Grimaldi, then on Via dei Normanni and take the path heading to south that goes trough the top of Tuppo 

la Neve mountain (heading towards the electricity pylon on the top of the mountain). Once passed 

the electricity pylon, descend into the valley keeping left up to the path that goes back up to Monte S. 

Angelo town.

Abbey of Pulsano 

(from Monte S. Angelo to S. Maria di Pulsano) 

Route of high landscape and historic value, with scenic view on Pulsano valley, on Manfredonia and on 

the Adriatic sea. At its end, don´t miss a visit to the abbey built on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple 

and partially incorporated into a natural cave. To truly experience the Church dedicated to Mariabone 

must sit in solitude because, as one of the local monks once said, ”The silence allows one to hear the 

voice of the Divine”. 

Starting point: Sp 56 from Monte S. Angelo to Pulsano in S. Maria di Pulsano direction. 

Itinerary length: about 16 km (round-trip) 

Max slope: 300 meters (at starting point – M. S. Angelo) 


It is suggested to park, when coming by car, near Hotel Palace S. Michele. If coming by bus, there are 

several connection between M. S. Angelo and other towns in Gargano.

Easy route, always on asphalt road. From M. S. Angelo take SP 56 following indications for S. Maria di 

Pulsano keeping always view of Adriatic sea and Manfredonia on your left up to reach, after 8 km, the 

entrance gate of the abbey . After visiting the abbey, go back the same way.

How to reach Gargano. 

Transport and local buses 

By car 

From North 

Follow the A 14 highway (Pescara/Bari/Taranto direction). Exit at the „Poggio Imperiale/Lesina“ tollgate 

and follow the indications for Gargano/Rodi/Vieste on the SS693. 

From South 

Follow the A 14 highway (Pescara/Ancona direction). Exit at the „Cerignola est“ tollgate. Than follow 

the indications for Manfredonia /Mattinata/Vieste. 

By train 

Nearest train stations are Foggia, Manfredonia and Peschici Calenella. 

By air 

Nearest airports are Bari, Pescara and Neaples. 

By bus 

“Ferrovie del Gargano” and “Sita” are the two main bus companies that connect Gargano towns with 

main train stations and airports and with many of the biggest towns in Italy(Rome, Florence, Milan, 

Neaples, etc).
