WACkER – LEAdER ANd INNOvATOR
IN A ChANGING AdhESIvES MARkET
WACKER is a leading supplier of vinyl
acetate-based polymer dispersions
for waterborne adhesives. If there is
one thing that describes WACKER today,
it is ‘future-focused’. The adhesive
formulation industry and the manufacturing
industries it supplies are changing
at a breakneck pace. Therefore,
we continuously develop and revise
our product range to reflect present and
future market needs, the foremost of
which are a greater cost/performance
ratio, efficiency, flexibility and compliance
with consumer health and environmental
concerns.
A Tradition of Innovation
As early as the 1950s, WACKEr scientists
worked on polymer binders and by the
mid 1960s, successfully developed vinyl
acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE) dispersions.
Since then, WACKEr has never
stopped refining and improving its VAE
technology. As a result, WACKEr has continued
to set the benchmark in copolymer
dispersions. WACKEr reinvests approximately
four percent of sales revenue into
r&D across the company. Over the past
four years, WACKEr has applied for patents
on 528 inventions resulting in a patent
portfolio of 5,000 patents already granted
and another 2,900 patents pending.
Broad Range of Products and Solutions
WACKEr’s polymer business line specializes
in dispersions based on vinyl acetateethylene
co- and terpolymers. Today the
WACKEr VINNAPAS ® portfolio caters to
the needs of adhesives suppliers to the
paper and packaging, wood-based materials,
flooring and construction, pressuresensitive
paper labels and automotive
industries. Such diverse application requirements
call for a clearly differentiated
and adapted product port folio. That is why
we have divided the VINNAPAS ® product
range into two value classes: VINNAPAS ®
Standard and VINNAPAS ® Plus.

Global Expertise with Local Focus
We also give our customers the benefits
of working with a global network that spans
all key economic regions. WACKER is present
with some 100 subsidiaries and sales
offices, and the WACKER POLYMERS
business line runs nine technical centers
and five manufacturing plants across
Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific
region. Although global in scope, we are
local in focus with an in-depth understanding
of local market needs and an emphasis
on close relationships with our customers.
A Dedication to Partnership
and Knowledge-Sharing
In accordance with our commitment to
knowledge-sharing for the wider benefit
of the industry and our customers, we
established the WACKER ACADEMY.
We also offer technical centers in all key
regions. These laboratories are designed
to assist customers with their applications
and product modifications as well as in
developing new systems and formulations.
WACKER developed VAE technology
in the mid-60s and began industrial
scale production in 1966.
Today, WACKER still pioneers the
technology’s development and is
responsible for one of the largest
shares of global VAE production.
6
The High-Performance Choice
Vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) technology is
increasingly replacing other technologies
due to the continuous refinement of its
core benefits of excellent cost-in-use and
broad formulation flexibility, in line with
future trends. Recent developments in the
VINNAPAS ® range have extended its
applicability beyond the traditional paper
and packaging, wood working, flooring
and construction markets to new markets,
such as pressure-sensitive labeling and
automotive adhesives.
The VINNAPAS ® range offers a broad
selection of products to enable adhesives
manufacturers to formulate the right balance
of cost and performance for their
end-customer's adhesive application.
Designed with Market-Leading Insight
Due to their copolymer composition, vinyl
acetate-ethylene copolymer dispersions
enable the formulation of adhesives with
low migration potential (according to (EC)
1935/2004) and reduce or avoid the need
for a film-forming agent. Film formation
occurs even at low temperatures (< 5 °C).
VINNAPAS ® dispersions are stabilized
with colloid systems and/or surfactant
systems. The most common colloid
system used in adhesive applications is
poly(vinyl alcohol), a large water-soluble
molecule. It enables a high degree of wet
tack that is not possible with surfactant
protection alone. VAE dispersions protected
with partially hydrolyzed PVOH
can be readily machine applied and are
non-spattering. They display fast setting,
have good flow and are easy to clean up.
Surfactant-protected systems are much
more thixotropic than PVOH-stabilized dispersions
and become thinner under high
shear conditions. Their advantages include
lower heat-seal temperature, better adhesion
to plastics, clearer films, higher water
resistance and good spray ability. In some
cases, our dispersions are polymerized
with a combination of protective colloids
and surfactants to achieve the best combination
of performance attributes.
Superior Properties Enabling
Long-Lasting Adhesives
VINNAPAS ® VAE dispersions feature an
excellent adhesion and cohesion balance,
high degrees of wet tack and strong resistance
to plasticizers. In addition, they bond
to a wide variety of substrates. Specific
VINNAPAS ® products also offer the advantage
of being suitable for both roller
applications and the nozzle technology
that is replacing the roller technology in
many markets.
Environmental and Health Impact
All of our VINNAPAS ® VAE dispersions
for the adhesives market are water-based,
and produced without organic solvents or
plasticizers. Many are produced without
the use of APEO surfactants, and feature
a low VAM content (< 1,000 ppm). These
characteristics put them in line with evertightening
consumer health legislation,
especially for food packaging – in this
sector, the migration of constituents from
packaging materials into food is under intense
scrutiny. In addition, the production
efficiencies made possible by formulating
with VAEs enable manufacturers to lower
their environmental impact.

VINNAPAS ® VAE Dispersion Key Benefits
• Future-proof technology based on vinyl
acetate monomer and ethylene feedstocks
• Good cost/performance ratio versus other
monomer systems
• APEO-free technology (no intentionally
added APEOs)
• Heat resistance, high degrees of wet tack,
fast setting speed
• No need for plasticizer in the formulation,
thus allowing adhesives with low migration
potential
A Tradition of Innovation
As early as the 1950s, WACKEr scientists
worked on polymer binders and by the
mid 1960s, successfully developed vinyl
acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE) dispersions.
Since then, WACKEr has never
stopped refining and improving its VAE
technology. As a result, WACKEr has continued
to set the benchmark in copolymer
dispersions. WACKEr reinvests approximately
four percent of sales revenue into
r&D across the company. Over the past
four years, WACKEr has applied for patents
on 528 inventions resulting in a patent
portfolio of 5,000 patents already granted
and another 2,900 patents pending.
Broad Range of Products and Solutions
WACKEr’s polymer business line specializes
in dispersions based on vinyl acetateethylene
co- and terpolymers. Today the
WACKEr VINNAPAS ® portfolio caters to
the needs of adhesives suppliers to the
paper and packaging, wood-based materials,
flooring and construction, pressuresensitive
paper labels and automotive
industries. Such diverse application requirements
call for a clearly differentiated
and adapted product port folio. That is why
we have divided the VINNAPAS ® product
range into two value classes: VINNAPAS ®
Standard and VINNAPAS ® Plus.
