Polydimethylsiloxanes<br />

The standard grades in the WACKER ® AK Silicone Fluid line come in a wide range of viscosities,<br />

from 10 mm² s - ¹ to 200,000 mm² s - ¹, to suit your application. The low-viscosity AK silicone<br />

fluids boost polishability, while the high-viscosity grades intensify the end product’s shine and<br />

depth of shade – even as they are being applied.<br />

Amino Polydimethylsiloxanes<br />

Amino polydimethylsiloxanes are available as reactive and unreactive products with different<br />

contents of aminoalkyl groups. Reactive grades crosslink to yield an insoluble polymer film that<br />

offers good detergent resistance and protective action. Unreactive grades are characterized by<br />

excellent active-ingredient stability and a very long shelf life. All amino polydimethylsiloxanes<br />

offer outstanding polishability, high color saturation, and water repellency.<br />

Silicone Resins<br />

Silicone resins can be combined with WACKER ® AK Silicone Fluids to create a highly durable,<br />

water-repellent protective film whose hardness can be adjusted with precision. Silicone resins<br />

from WACKER are thus ideal for premium-category household-care products.

Silicone waxes from WACKER lead the field when it comes to water repellency, far outperforming<br />

The modern consumer does not associate fabrics only with an article of clothing or an article of<br />

daily use. Regardless of whether it is a towel or a pair of trousers – the important thing is what a<br />

fabric feels like. Silicones are the substances that consumer dreams are made of: only silicones<br />

with their extremely low fiber-fiber friction provide for a silky softness, which no other softener has<br />

achieved to date. But they can do still more: when they are mixed with esterquat, pleasant and<br />

functional effects are possible with an excellent price-performance ratio.<br />

Bereck’s mechanism of action<br />

The active ingredients of a fabric<br />

softener should both reduce the friction<br />

between the individual fibers and<br />

fiber-metal friction. Only in this manner<br />

can undesirable consequences in<br />

the washing process be avoided.<br />

In this context, silicones are valuable<br />

aids: They have a pronounced lubricating<br />

and softening effect on textile fibers<br />

and are therefore favored in textile<br />

finishing.<br />

Due to the high flexibility of their Si-O-Si backbone, silicone polymers exhibit a good spreading<br />

action as well as an excellent lubricating action on the fibers when they are deposited there.<br />

As a result of the possibilities of different functionalization, e.g. with amino groups, they can be<br />

anchored directly to the fibers.

Hydrophilic Silicone Softener<br />

New softener molecules ensure the silky softness characteristics typical of silicones and simultaneously<br />

ensure a high absorbency in the textile. A concentrated aqueous macroemulsion<br />

results in a supple softness concentrated at the surface. Cotton remains absorbent, and<br />

synthetic fibers are given hydrophilic properties.<br />

Wrinkle Protection<br />

The aqueous emulsion of a low-viscosity, reactive silicone fluid formulation for use in fabric<br />

softeners increases the resilience of the fibers by reducing fiber-fiber friction. Articles of clothing<br />

treated with Fabric Care exhibit substantially fewer wrinkles, are even smoother after the subsequent<br />

washing, and need less ironing.<br />

Easy Ironing<br />

Functional silicone fluids and silicone rubber dispersions were developed specifically for use in<br />

fabric softeners and in ironing sprays, and provide consumers with a time-saving easy-ironing<br />

effect.<br />

Fast Drying<br />

Used in the last rinse cycle, polar-modified silicones, so-called superwetters, result in a faster,<br />

significant dewatering of the fibers during the spin cycle. That saves the drying time on the<br />

clothesline as well as in the dryer after the wash cycle, reducing the energy consumption and<br />

electricity costs in the machine drying cycle.<br />

Water & Soil Repellency<br />

In order for functional sportswear to remain permanently hydrophobic and soil-repellent, these<br />

high-tech textiles must be periodically reimpregnated. Special impregnation sprays or wash<br />

impregnation attend to that independently in the last rinse cycle. And most importantly, with<br />

WACKER Fabric Care this is even achieved without the addition of solvents and fluorocarbon<br />

resins.

In exhaustive tests, the performance of silicone emulsions for textile care compared to a typical<br />

fabric softener with organic softening agents – particularly with esterquat as active ingredient —<br />

was investigated. It became apparent that the best results in conventional textile effects such as<br />

softness, hydrophilicity, wrinkle-protection, or easy ironing were achieved using silicone active<br />

ingredients combined with organic esterquat.<br />

What’s more, the comparison tests showed that silicones are also cost-effective, competitive<br />

alternatives. Silicones can generally be more readily applied to fibers when they are used in<br />

combination with quaternary ammonium compounds. These organic products provide important<br />

basic properties and simultaneously support the deposition of silicone products on the<br />

fibers. Plus, they are hard to beat in terms of their outstanding additional effects even when<br />

used in small amounts, thereby extending the functional spectrum of organic softening agents.<br />

Foam is a normal side effect of machine washing with liquid or powder detergents. But it is not<br />

just the surfactants in the detergent formulations that are responsible for the foam. The movement<br />

of the laundry during the wash cycle, the temperature, water hardness, ionic strength, pH<br />

and machine load, type of laundry and degree of soiling are also contributory factors.<br />

Foam is crucial to the quality of a laundry wash. In moderation, it protects the laundry. But too<br />

much of it can affect the machine’s performance and the washing process itself and, what is<br />

more, increases water consumption.<br />

Antifoam agents from WACKER are a highly efficient and reliable means of controlling foam<br />

in detergent formulations: for clean laundry, optimum processes and reduced water consumption<br />

– it‘s all about not too much and not too little.<br />

The silicone-based SILFOAM ® series of antifoam agents are tailored to the requirements of<br />

manufacturers of powder and liquid detergents. They are suitable for every type of detergent<br />

and are proven to be much more effective than organic defoamers. Additionally, SILFOAM ®<br />

Ideal for Every Machine<br />

Different types of washing machine are used around the world. Europeans and, increasingly,<br />

Americans prefer high efficiency machines, i.e. front loaders with a horizontal axis. These do a<br />

good wash, but generate a lot of foam in the process. Foam control is therefore essential for this<br />

type of machine. Using SILFOAM ® antifoam products in detergents for front loaders eliminates<br />

this problem. Top loaders generate much less foam than front loaders. However, they consume<br />

more water during washing and rinsing.<br />

Optimum Results with Every Detergent Formulation<br />

Surfactants are one of the active agents contained in detergents. They lower the surface tension<br />

of the water, and so enable the wash liquor to readily wet the textile fibers. They also help the<br />

wash liquor to wet the dirt, which is often greasy, and to remove it from the fiber. By accumulating<br />

at the interface between air and water, surfactants stabilize the foam lamellae. Surfactants vary<br />

in their capacity to generate foam. When it comes to defoaming detergent powders, SILFOAM ®<br />

antifoam compounds and powders are ideal. For liquid detergents, WACKER has developed selfdispersing,<br />

water-free SILFOAM ® antifoam agents. For gel detergents, high-viscosity SILFOAM ®<br />

products and antifoam emulsions can be used.

Why Use WACKER Silicones in Your Formulations?<br />

SILFOAM ® silicone-based foam control systems differ from organic antifoams in one critical<br />

aspect: they are much more effective and versatile than organic defoamers.<br />

Our antifoams can be used over a broad temperature range and especially in much lower<br />

doses. Organic defoamers, by contrast, are only active above their melting point, require higher<br />

wash temperatures and their efficacy may be severely impaired by the water hardness of the<br />

wash liquor.<br />
