Harry Christophers: conductor
PALESTRINA: Hodie Christus natus est (motet) • Christe Redemptor omnium •
Magnificant Quinti toni • Tui sunt caeli • Reges Tharsis • Mass Hodie Christus
natus est • Song of Songs Nos. 1–3
After Volume 1 won the International Classical Music Award for Early Music,
Volume 2 of The Sixteen’s new series devoted to Palestrina is based around
his glorious antiphon for Christmas Day, Hodie Christus natus est. Palestrina’s
legacy and impact on sacred music worldwide is second to none; he was
a master craftsman whose music composers of all ages have attempted to
emulate. He shapes his music in a beautifully sonorous way using a lot of
suspensions but always coming back into the line of the music.
BACH: Weihnachtsoratorium
For the end of 2011, Beringer has announced his retirement as director
of the Windsbach Boys Choir after 34 years. Winter & Winter has
chosen this recording as a highlight of his work, newly mastered and in a
refined sound quality. The Windsbach Boys Choir and the Munich Bach
Soloists must be counted among the most outstanding interpreters of the
Christmas Oratorio. The production is accomplished by the prominent
participation of soloists Juliane Banse, Cornelia Kallisch, Markus Schäfer,
Robert Swensen, and Thomas Quasthoff. Bach’s oeuvre takes center stage
and comes to beautiful bloom.
