The Particulars
After picking up its first win of the season in exciting
fashion, Harvard goes for two straight as
the Crimson takes on Denver Saturday in Denver,
Colo. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 9:30
p.m. Eastern.
Harvard Coach Scott Anderson
Scott Anderson is in his 20th season as Harvard’s
head coach, and he brings a 138-131 record into
Saturday’s game. Anderson has led Harvard to
four NCAA tournament appearances (1988,
1990, 1996, 2006) as well as the 1990 Ivy League
title. He is 1-2 against Denver.
Series History
Saturday’s game will be just the fourth meeting
between Harvard and Denver, and the Pioneers
hold a 2-1 series lead. Each school has defended
its home field in the series as the Pioneers have
won both meetings in Denver, while the Crimson
took last year’s matchup at Jordan Field.

Senior midfielder Carle Stenmark (Denver,
Colo.) will play in his hometown for the second
time in his college career. Stenmark had two goals
against Denver in his last trip to the Mile High
City april 2, 2005.
When We Last Met
The last Harvard-Denver matchup stands as the
longest game in the Crimson’s 129 seasons of varsity
men’s lacrosse. Harvard took an 8-7 win in
the third overtime period of a game that lasted 70
minutes, 45 seconds.

Senior midfielder John Henry Flood (Westfield,
N.J.) has won 61.9 percent of his faceoffs this season
(73 of 118). Flood ranks seventh among Division
I players in faceoff percentage and leads the
Ivy League in that category.

John Henry Flood ranks second in the Ivy League
and is eighth in Division I in ground balls per
game (6.20).

Sophomore attackman Max Motschwiller (Glen
Head, N.Y.) has a team-high nine points through
five games of the 2007 season. Motschwiller had
six points in 13 games last season.
In The Books
Max Motschwiller is the only Harvard player with
at least one point in all five games this season.

Harvard has outshot its opponents by a 188-164
margin this season, but has been outscored, 61-
40, through five games.
Nick Of Time
Sophomore midfielder Nick Smith (Hillsborough,
N.J.) scored his first career goal in Harvard’s
7-6 win against Penn last Saturday. Smith had the
game-tying goal in the fourth quarter.

Freshman midfielder Jason Duboe (Long Grove,
Ill.) has scored six goals in his last four games.
Honor Board
Senior attackman Greg Cohen (Syosset, N.Y.)
was chosen as an honorable mention preseason
All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse. Cohen
earned postseason honorable mention honors following
the 2006 campaign.
Player To Watch
Greg Cohen was named to the Preseason Watch
List by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. The
watch list consists of players expected to be in
consideration for the Tewaaraton Award as the top
player in college lacrosse.
Middle Men
Harvard’s starting offensive midfield unit of Carle
Stenmark, Jason Duboe and senior Brian Mahler
(Birmingham, Mich.) has a combined 17 goals in
five games. The Crimson’s starting attackmen have
a combined 13 goals.

Helping Hands
Evan Calvert is ranked seventh in the Ivy League
in assists per game (1.33 apg). Max Motschwiller
is ninth (1.20 apg).

Sophomore goalie Joe Pike (Phoenix, Md.), sophomore
midfielder Garrett Schabb (Reisterstown,
Md.), and freshman defenseman Billy Geist (Arnold,
Md.) were high school teammates at the

(Guilderland, N.Y.) and junior defenseman Zach

Pedigree
Harvard has won 13 national championships in
men’s lacrosse, including the first two intercollegiate
titles (in 1881 and 1882). Harvard has won
three Ivy League championships (1964, 1980,
1990) and made five NCAA tournament appearances
(1980, 1988, 1990, 1996, 2006). Eightythree
Harvard players have achieved All-America
status.
Stay A While
Harvard has had just three head coaches since
1949. Bruce Munro coached the Crimson from
1949-74. Bob Scalise (now Harvard’s director of
athletics) took over from 1975-87, and Scott Anderson
has coached the Crimson since 1988.
Championship Tradition
Harvard has won 138 national team championships
in 18 different sports since the men’s track
and field team won the school’s first national title
in 1880. The list includes four NCAA titles (1989
men’s ice hockey, 1990 women’s lacrosse, 2003
women’s rowing, 2006 fencing).

Men’s Lacrosse Championships, which will be

THE SCOUTING REPORT
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard enters Saturday’s game against Denver
at 1-4 after the Crimson picked up its first win
with a dramatic 7-6 overtime decision against
Penn last Saturday at Jordan Field.
The Crimson scored the first three goals and
the last three goals of the game against Penn,
sandwiching a 6-1 Quaker run through the first,
second and third quarters. Harvard’s defense
turned in its most impressive performance of the
season as it held Penn without a goal for the last
20:01 of the game.
Harvard’s offense has come from both its starting
attackmen and its top offensive midfield line.
The top three point-scorers are the three starting
attackmen, while the offensive middies comprise
the next three leading scorers.
Sophomore A Max Motschwiller has a teamhigh
nine points (3g, 6a), while attackmen Greg
Cohen and Evan Calvert have eight points each.
Senior M Carle Stenmark is tied with Cohen
and freshman M Jason Duboe for the team lead
with six goals on the year.
Senior M John Henry Flood has won 61.9
percent of his faceoffs (73 of 118) and has a teamhigh
31 ground balls.
Sophomore G Joe Pike has played most of the
minutes in goal, and he brings a 12.28 goalsagainst
average and a .412 save percentage into
Saturday’s game.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Denver enters Saturday’s game at 5-4 on the
year following a 10-9 win against Quinnipiac last
weekend in Hamden, Conn. The Pioneers are
playing their sixth home game of the season and
are 3-2 in the Mile High City.
Denver’s wins have come against Penn State,
Villanova, Maryland-Baltimore County, Hartford
and Quinnipiac, while the Pioneers have fallen to
North Carolina, Dke, Stony Brook and Vermont.
The Pioneers are coming off a 2006 season that
produced a Great Western Lacrosse League championship
and an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Head coach Jamie Munro is no stranger to
the Ivy League as he was an All-America player at
Brown as an undergraduate.
The Pioneers are led by sophomore M Joey Murray,
who has a team-high 23 points on the year
(12g, 11a). Junior A Jon Paulson leads the squad
with 15 goals and has 18 points, while sophomore
A Michael Goltra is the top feeder with 13
points.
Freshman M Shea Sheppard has taken most
of the faceoffs and has won 52.7 percent of his
chances. Senior D David Hahn leads an aggressive
Denver defense with 36 ground balls on the year.
Senior G Jeb Hollingsworth brings a .540 save
ratio and an 8.29 goals-against average into Saturday’s
game.

Anderson
Scott Anderson, a four-time
New England coach of the year,
enters his 20th season as head
coach of Harvard’s men’s lacrosse
team in 2007.
The 2007 season is Anderson’s
30th as a member of the
Crimson coaching staff. He
spent 10 years as an assistant
before taking over as head coach
in 1988.
Anderson is just the Crimson’s
third men’s lacrosse coach in the
last 58 years, and he enters the
2007 season ranked second on
Harvard’s career wins chart. He
trails only the legendary Bruce
Munro, who won 172 games in
25 years with the Crimson.
Anderson has led Harvard to
four NCAA tournament appearances,
one Ivy League championship,
and a winning record in
seven of the last 11 seasons.
Anderson most recently took
Harvard to the NCAA tournament
in 2006, when his squad
was one of four Ivy League
schools chosen to the field of
16. The Crimson finished the
year ranked among the national
top 20 in both major polls.
Anderson led his 1998 squad
to an 11-3 overall record and
saw six of his players earn All-
Ivy League accolades that season.
He was selected as the New
England coach of the year for
the fourth time that season after
previously winning that award
in 1988, 1990 and 1996.
Anderson’s 1996 squad stands
as one of the best in Harvard’s
history. The Crimson finished
that season with a 12-3 overall
record, took second in the Ivy
League with a 5-1 record, and
advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Anderson saw eight
Harvard players earn All-Ivy
honors that season, including
Mike Eckert `96, who became
the first Harvard player named
Ivy League player of the year.
The 1988 season saw
Anderson lead Harvard to its
second NCAA tournament
berth in the program’s history
in just his first season as head
coach. Anderson’s 1990 squad
advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal
round after wrapping
up the Ivy League title with a
5-1 mark.
Before assuming the head
coaching duties, Anderson
enjoyed a successful run as an
assistant at Harvard, alongside
former head coach and
current director of athletics
Bob Scalise.
Scalise and Anderson helped
Harvard to prominence in the
Ivy League as the Crimson
won the 1980 league title and
earned a spot in the NCAA
tournament. That championship
was Harvard’s first in
men’s lacrosse since 1964.
Hardly a stranger to the Ivy
League, Anderson spent four
years as an assistant coach at
Cornell before he joined the
staff at Harvard. His tenure
in Ithaca saw the Big Red
win two NCAA championships,
four Ivy League titles,
and made four appearances
in the semifinal round of the
NCAA tournament.
A 1973 graduate of
Dartmouth, Anderson was
an All-Ivy League selection
for the Big Green who captained
the squad as a senior.
A standout attackman as an
undergraduate, he scored
64 goals with 36 assists in
his career, graduating as the
school’s sixth-leading scorer.
He ranks 17th on the Big
Green’s career scoring list.
Anderson is currently a
member of the United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association All-America committee
and the Tewaaraton
Award selection committee.
