Fourth Sunday of Advent
In Mother Teresa's speech before the National Prayer
Breakfast in 1994, she related a story of how she had been told of
a starving Hindu family. Quickly, she gathered as much rice as
she could spare from her orphanage and went to see the family.
There were several children, their eyes "shining with hunger" as
Mother Teresa put it. The children's mother left the house for a
short time; when she returned, Mother Teresa wanted to know
where she had gone. "They were hungry, too," she told her,
referring to a neighboring Muslim family.
A mother is presented with an unexpected gift, and without
thought of self immediately sets about to share it with the world.
Gabriel has proclaimed that Mary not only is pregnant, but that
she will give birth to the Savior of the world. Talk about
unexpected gifts! We have a tendency to sometimes take this
story matter-of-factly, but perhaps during this final week of
Advent, we might take a few moments to quietly reflect on Mary
and how she immediately knew and freely accepted her role in
being part of God's greatest gift.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that Mary
most perfectly embodies the definition of faith. From her humble
acceptance of the angel Gabriel's news to her trust as her son-
God's Son-was led to his death, reveals to us that a mother's faith
and love can be perfect (CCC 148-149). In these last few days
before Christmas, share in the joy of the season with your mother,
even if it is only in her memory. If there has been a falling out,
know that she has never stopped loving you; reach out to her, tell
her you love her and that life begins today.

Heavenly Father, in a few days we will celebrate the
birth of your Son, Jesus. As we are thankful for the
birth of the Christ-child, help us to appreciate our
families and friends. May this season of joy be a
blessing for all — particularly for the poor and needy.
May the message of the angels — Glory to God in the
Highest — burn brightly in our hearts this week.
We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised
when Emily, a young lady aged about 20 years old, walked
up and sat on his lap.
Now, we all know that Santa doesn't usually take requests
from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked
her, “What do you want for Christmas?”
“Something for my mother, please,” replied Emily sweetly.
“Something for your mother?! Well, that's very loving and
thoughtful of you,” smiled Santa. “What do would you like
me to bring her?”
Emily answered quickly, “A son-in-law.”

The Prophet’s Role
Excerpt from the Little Blue Book
It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the
flock to be commander of my people Israel. I have been with
you wherever you went , and I have destroyed all your enemies
before you.” (2Sam 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16)
It is about 1000 B.C., 250 years after God led the people from
slavery in Egypt to the freedom of the Promised Land. It took a
long time for these people from different tribes to unify as a nation.
The turning point in the process came when David became king.
Today’s first reading from the Second Book of Samuel deals with
God’s covenant with King David.
In the passage above, the prophet Nathan speaks to David on
God’s behalf, assuring the king that God will preserve David’s dynasty.
Nathan will speak to David several more times, but he won’t
always bring a message David wants to hear.
Sometimes Nathan’s job seems a thankless one.
Prophets in the biblical tradition do not have their own agenda.
Prophets, like Nathan, let God act through them to accomplish what
God wants to do, and what only God can do.
That’s why true religious prophets usually didn’t want to be
prophets. It’s not a career they had in mind. They simply accepted
a call to be a channel of God’s word, God’s power, God’s peace...
and they let God work through them.
I can learn from this.
As a person of faith, do I simply try to use Christian principles
to carry out my own agenda? Or do I turn to the Lord in what I am
about each day?
Do I seek out Jesus and let him act through me? Or do I know
better myself?
It deserves a lot of thought.
Thank you to the many parishioners that
have helped the flood survivors.

with clean up and rebuilding, donating coats and household
items, making calls and by listening to those individuals that
have been through so much. THANK YOU!

Mass of the Toys
Once again the students of St. Thomas More School
have reached out to others by contributing a toy or game
to be distributed to children of the incarcerated at the
Michigan City facility. The generosity of our students will
help spread the joy of Christmas to many other children.
Christmas Choir Concert
Under the direction of St. Thomas More School Music Teacher, Ms. Liz
Daniel, over 250 fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students filled the
church on December 3rd with songs of the season. Entertaining many of
their parents, friends, and relatives, the students sang many holiday songs
based on the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas. Throughout the
evening’s performance, students read verses from the Bible that
corresponded to the song’s twelve verses.
Many thanks go to Ms. Daniel and Ms. Lorandos for their many hours of
work in preparation for this concert.
The younger STMS students presented their Christmas Concert two days
later on December 5th to a crowd that filled the church from wall to wall.

Habitat ReStores are retail outlets where quality, used
and surplus building materials are sold at a fraction of
normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help local
affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within
the community.
Materials sold by Habitat ReStores are usually donated
from building supply stores, contractors, demolition
crews or from individuals who wish to show their
support for Habitat. In addition to raising funds,
ReStores help the environment by rechanneling good
materials into use.

RESPECT LIFE CORNER
It needs to BE perfectly clear that F.O.C.A., the Freedom
of Choice Act, is the first move the new President expects
to make in 2009, signing that Act into law. Why is that
bad?? Because the freedom proposed is that of snuffing out
the life of an unborn child, in other words an abortion: 1) in
the case of a minor, without a parent's consent or
knowledge; 2) in any case not necessarily to be performed
by a licensed physician; 3) to mandate abortions in all
hospitals regardless of any religious affiliation; 4) to
disallow any refusal to perform an abortion, nor to allow
any future protest against this law; and 5) to negate the
partial-birth abortion ban, for which our legislature did
vote. Therefore, we must contact our legislators, asking
them to vote against enactment of F.O.C.A. They are (you

STM Traveling Club News
Our Christmas Shopping Trip to Geneva was filled with
excitement and happiness. Many interesting and beautiful
gifts were purchased by our fun-loving group. Many thanks
go to Susan and Candy in the office for being so helpful this
year and we also appreciate the enthusiasm we have received
from everyone.
We will not be planning winter trips because the weather
is never predictable, but we are now planning trips for next
March or April.. Do you have suggestions for one-day trips
for the future? If so, please give us your suggestions
through the parish office. Please write your ideas down or
give us any brochures you may have. Thank you for your
support and this gives us the encouragement to continue with
plans for more interesting and fun trips.
