muto, vi sciorinava il campionario delle mercanzie<br />

riportate dai suoi viaggi ai confini dell’impero: un<br />

elmo, una conchiglia, una noce di cocco, un ventaglio.<br />

Disponendo in un certo ordine gli oggetti<br />

sulle piastrelle bianche e nere e via via sponstandoli<br />

con mosse studiate, l’ambasciatore cercava<br />

di rappresentare agli occhi del monarca le vicissitudini<br />

del suo viaggio, lo stato dell’impero, le<br />

prerogative dei remoti capoluoghi. • Kublai<br />

era un attento giocatore di scacchi; seguendo i<br />

gesti di Marco osservava che certi pezzi implicavano<br />

o escludevano la vicinanza d’altri pezzi e si<br />

spostavano secondo certe linee. Trascurando la<br />

varietà di forme degli oggetti, ne definiva il modo<br />

di disporsi gli uni rispetto agli altri sul pavimento<br />

di maiolica. Pensò: “Se ogni città è come una<br />

of arranging one with respect to the others on the<br />
