Levante, Marco Polo non poteva esprimersi altrimenti<br />

che estraendo oggetti dalle sue valige:<br />

tamburi, pesci salati, collane di denti di facocero,<br />

e indicandoli con gesti, salti, grida di meraviglia<br />

o d’orrore, o imitando il latrato dello sciacallo<br />

e il chiurlio del barbagianni. Non sempre le<br />

connessioni tra un elemento e l’altro del racconto<br />

risultavano evidenti all’imperatore; gli oggetti<br />

potevano voler dire cose diverse: un turcasso<br />

pieno di frecce indicava ora l’approssimarsi<br />

d’una guerra, ora abbondanza di cacciagione,<br />

oppure la bogetta d’un armaiolo; una clessidra<br />

poteva significare il tempo che passa o che è<br />

passato, oppure la sabbia, o un’officina in cui<br />

si fabbricano clessidre. Ma ciò che rendeva<br />

prezioso a Kublai ogni fatto o notizia riferito dal<br />

suo inarticolato informatore era lo spazio che<br />

restava loro intorno, un vuoto non riempito di<br />

parole. Le descrizioni di cittá visitate da Marco<br />

Newly arrived and quite ignorant of the languages<br />

of the Levant, Marco Polo could express himself<br />

only by drawing objects from his baggage—drums,<br />

salt fi<strong>sh</strong>, necklaces of wart hogs’ teeth—and pointing<br />

to them with gestures, leaps, cries of wonder<br />

and horror, imitating the bay of the jackal, the<br />

hoot of the owl.<br />

The connections between one element of the<br />

story and another were not always obvious to the<br />

emperor; the objects could have various meanings:<br />

a quiver filled with arrows could indicate the<br />

approach of war, or an abundance of game, or else<br />

an armorer’s <strong>sh</strong>op; an hourglass could mean time<br />

passing, or time past, or sand, or a place where<br />

hourglasses are made.<br />

But what enhanced for Kublai every event or<br />

piece of news reported by his inarticulate informer<br />

was the space that remained around it, a void<br />

not filled with words. The descriptions of cities
