Geomechanics Society & New
Zealand Geomechanical Society
The Australian Geomechanics Society was founded in 1970. Its
origins lie in the National Committee of Soil Mechanics of the
Institution of Engineers, Australia established in 1953 and the call for
a corresponding society in rock mechanics. In 1973 the society was
expanded to include the third discipline of engineering geology and
has remained substantially unchanged since that date. The society is
affiliated with:
• the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical
Engineering (ISSMGE);
• the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM); and
• the International Association of Engineering Geology and the
Environment (IAEG).
The AGS produces Australian Geomechanics newsletter and journal
of the Society and specialty conferences, symposia, seminars and
workshops, including the four yearly ANZ Geomechanics conference.

The New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) is registered as a
charitable organization and currently has about 880 members.
Membership of the Society is open to engineers, geologists, scientists,
technicians, contractors, students and others who are interested
in the practice and application of soil mechanics, rock mechanics,
engineering geology, hydrogeology, environmental geotechnics
and geotechnical engineering in general. The NZGS operates as a
Collaborating Technical Society within the auspices of the Institute of
Professional Engineers New Zealand.
The aims of the Society are to advance the study and application of
soil mechanics, rock mechanics and engineering geology among
engineers and scientists; to advance the practice and application of
these disciplines in engineering; to implement the statutes of the
respective international societies in so far as they are applicable in New
Zealand; and to ensure that learning achieved through these is passed
on to the public.
The affairs of the NZGS are managed by a committee of 7 to 10
persons, elected by members of the Society, and an appointed
secretary. The NZGS also has working relationships with the Structural
Engineering Society, NZ Society of Earthquake Engineering, NZ Society
of Large Dams, the Institute of Civil Engineers and the Australian
Geomechanics Society.
