5. SEISMIC BEHAVIOUR OF RC COLUMNS EMBEDDING STEEL PROFILES<br />

region, even if some inconveniences occurred in <strong>the</strong> column length between <strong>the</strong><br />

joint <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> inflection point. It means that, a not accurate constructive process or<br />

<strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> not envisaged extra forces in <strong>the</strong> column may lead to an<br />

anticipated rupture in <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> a full-length steel pr<strong>of</strong>ile.<br />

Having had <strong>the</strong> chance to go fur<strong>the</strong>r into detail, also looking at <strong>the</strong> inside <strong>behaviour</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beam-to-column joints, <strong>the</strong> mechanisms activated in <strong>the</strong> shear load transfer<br />

were determined. The evidence is that <strong>the</strong> investigated solution with <strong>the</strong> continuity<br />

plates (stiffeners) welded to <strong>the</strong> steel column at <strong>the</strong> joint region seems not to give a<br />

substantial contribution in helping <strong>the</strong> load transfer at <strong>the</strong> beam-to-column joint.<br />

Thus, as not influencing significantly <strong>the</strong> global response <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> joint under study,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir usage in practice could be neglected also because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir remarkable effect<br />

on <strong>the</strong> overall cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> assemblage.<br />

Wishing to point out a commentary about <strong>the</strong> weak axis bending <strong>behaviour</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

concrete frame structure, we underline <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>the</strong> building might run if <strong>the</strong> <strong>seismic</strong><br />

wave comes along <strong>the</strong> minor axis bending <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> columns were not specifically<br />

designed to withst<strong>and</strong> cyclic loads regardless <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> steel pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

encased in <strong>the</strong> column.<br />

Finally, we can say that, at <strong>the</strong> moment, <strong>the</strong> new applications are concentrated on<br />

<strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> analytical models to evaluate <strong>the</strong> shear resistance at <strong>the</strong><br />

connection by means <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r numerical simulations by means <strong>of</strong> a FE program.<br />

It may be also interesting to produce a procedure in order to evaluate <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>behaviour</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one-sided type <strong>of</strong> joints starting from <strong>the</strong> conclusions drawn for<br />

<strong>the</strong> two-sided type <strong>of</strong> joints considered in this research <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />
