4. SEISMIC RESPONSE OF PARTIAL-STRENGTH COMPOSITE JOINTS<br />

In <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forces from <strong>the</strong> concrete slab to <strong>the</strong> column under hogging<br />

bending moment <strong>the</strong> longitudinal re-bars have played a relevant role. From <strong>the</strong><br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strain gauges data it resulted that <strong>the</strong> reinforcing bars deform<br />

plastically.<br />

Figure 4.29. Cracks at an inclination <strong>of</strong> 45° in <strong>the</strong><br />

exterior portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> concrete slab<br />

Moreover, <strong>the</strong> good <strong>behaviour</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> composite section under hogging bending<br />

moment is evident in <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> response <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> web panel too. In this case<br />

<strong>the</strong> distortion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> panel zone is only <strong>the</strong> 19% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total joint rotation, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

transmitted shear force is smaller. This means that <strong>the</strong> connection worked well with<br />

maximum rotation <strong>of</strong> about 50 mrad greater than those observed in <strong>the</strong> column<br />

web panel.<br />
