give generously to the Jüdische Winterhilfe. 196 It cannot be established what relief<br />

the Shtiblech were able to <strong>of</strong>fer other than that they definitely must have had links<br />

with the Verband ostjüdischer Organisationen <strong>Magdeburg</strong>s. 197<br />

Given the small size <strong>of</strong> the community, the majority <strong>of</strong> the social welfare<br />

programs operated directly out <strong>of</strong> the Provinzial-Verband für jüdische<br />

Wohlfahrtspflege, 198 <strong>under</strong> the presidency <strong>of</strong> Rabbi Dr Wilde. To a limited degree<br />

it also provided temporary financial relief. However, once the Jüdische<br />

Bezirksdarlehnskasse zu <strong>Magdeburg</strong> was founded on 28 March 1934 to meet the<br />

growing financial needs <strong>of</strong> members, this role declined. 199<br />

For the entire period <strong>under</strong> discussion, the areas <strong>of</strong> emigration, immigration,<br />

financial assistance to needy members and accommodation feature as ongoing<br />

matters. However, for particular periods, certain priorities did emerge. For the<br />

period from and including 1933 until the middle <strong>of</strong> 1937 the emphasis was clearly<br />

placed on employment and retraining. <strong>The</strong> employment market was constantly<br />

assessed and reported on. Advertisements were placed in the community for<br />

positions vacant. Employment opportunities as far away as Holland and<br />

Lithuania 200 were advertised in addition to positions where the applicant could<br />

‘not possess a pronounced Jewish appearance.’ 201 Young <strong>Jews</strong> were also sent to<br />
