Organisationen <strong>Magdeburg</strong>s. 86 This organisation indicates that the <strong>Jews</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Eastern European origin in <strong>Magdeburg</strong> operated separate welfare organisations.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Israelitischer Witwen- und Waisen-Unterstützungs-Fonds, the Jüdischer<br />

Hilfsverein zu <strong>Magdeburg</strong>, the Jüdische Bezirksdarlehnskasse zu <strong>Magdeburg</strong> and<br />

the Provinzial-Verband für jüdische Wohlfahrtspflege all operated as<br />

organisations dedicated to various forms <strong>of</strong> social welfare.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Israelitischer Witwen- und Waisen-Unterstützungs-Fonds had served the<br />

Jewish community <strong>of</strong> <strong>Magdeburg</strong> since 1871. 87 It is known that the organisation<br />

was required by the Gestapa to submit membership lists for each quarter. <strong>The</strong><br />

documentation confirming this only provides data for the period from 1 January<br />

1936 until 13 December 1937. 88 During this time Benno Kallmann was the<br />

president <strong>of</strong> the foundation. On 1 January 1936, Kallmann indicated there were<br />

279 members, and on 13 December 1937 that the membership stood at 201. 89 <strong>The</strong><br />

data supplied to the Gestapa provides all the personal particulars <strong>of</strong> members,<br />

including statistics <strong>of</strong> emigration, immigration and deaths. <strong>The</strong> documentation<br />

confirms the extensive nature <strong>of</strong> welfare work being <strong>under</strong>taken, as well as<br />

providing on an individual level information on the extent <strong>of</strong> the large number <strong>of</strong><br />

members who had already changed pr<strong>of</strong>essions and addresses, resulting from<br />

financial hardship. What is also <strong>of</strong> interest is that emigration statistics for each<br />
