which the Jewish community endured and attempted to adjust to; as well as the<br />

private discussions on such topics as emigration which were simultaneously<br />

taking place in homes. Finally, for this time period the situation <strong>of</strong> Jewish children<br />

and youth is explored, with particular reference to their schooling experiences, the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> Jewish youth groups and the emigration <strong>of</strong> unaccompanied Jewish<br />

youth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second period explores the events <strong>of</strong> the Reichskristallnacht, its<br />

ramifications and the subsequent escalation in persecutions which continued until<br />

liberation. This component follows the dehumanising persecutions administered<br />

ruthlessly, leading ultimately to permanent segregation, forced labour and<br />

deportation for the majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jews</strong>. This study ends with the liberation <strong>of</strong> only a<br />

handful <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jews</strong>, predominantly those in mixed marriages, children <strong>of</strong> such<br />

marriages or those in hiding. By April 1945 the majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>Magdeburg</strong>’s <strong>Jews</strong><br />

had perished, either at the hands <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nazi</strong>s and their helpers or during the Allied<br />

bombardment <strong>of</strong> the city.<br />
