In attempting to expedite the compulsory acquisition <strong>of</strong> Jewish property by<br />

‘Aryan’ purchasers, the provincial government posted further guidelines on 27<br />

February 1940 on how such contracts <strong>of</strong> sale and purchases were to be<br />

conducted. 64 In May 1940, sales were expedited after a further amendment to the<br />

edict on the compulsory registration <strong>of</strong> Jewish assets and property. 65 On 21<br />

September 1940, the <strong>Magdeburg</strong> Chamber <strong>of</strong> Industry and Commerce notified the<br />

provincial government that there were no longer any <strong>Jews</strong> <strong>of</strong> foreign nationality<br />

operating businesses in the city. 66<br />

On 24 October 1940, the provincial government declared that the removal <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Jews</strong> from the local economy had been achieved. Only two businesses<br />

remained to be dealt with administratively, as their former major Jewish<br />

shareholders had emigrated to England. 67 <strong>The</strong>se businesses were ‘Max Brandus<br />

Pty. Ltd.’, located at Gröperstraße 2, and the pump factory ‘Hannach & Co.’,<br />

located at Stolzestraße 2-5. On 1 April 1941, a list <strong>of</strong> fifty-five recently<br />

‘aryanised’ businesses in the administrative district <strong>of</strong> <strong>Magdeburg</strong> was despatched<br />

to the provincial government. Fifteen <strong>of</strong> those listed were in the city <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Magdeburg</strong> itself, including the abovementioned two businesses. 68 Attached to<br />

this list was a further incomplete list <strong>of</strong> thirty ‘aryanised’ Jewish businesses in<br />

<strong>Magdeburg</strong> with the dates <strong>of</strong> the registrations <strong>of</strong> the new owners. <strong>The</strong> earliest<br />
