CLUSIUS is the firft author who has defcribed and figured<br />
this plant, he is very minute in his defcription <strong>of</strong> it, noticing<br />
the exaft number <strong>of</strong> its ftamina; it is the more furprifing,<br />
therefore, that he fhould have fo little idea <strong>of</strong> generic charac<br />
ter, as to rank it with the trefoils merely from the form .<strong>of</strong><br />
its leaves: TOURNEFORT, born to illuftrate the genera <strong>of</strong><br />
plants, named it Fagonia^ in honour <strong>of</strong> .his friend and patron,<br />
Monf. FAGON, privy counfellor and confulting phyfician to<br />
LEWIS XlV»<br />
This fpecies is a native <strong>of</strong> the ifland <strong>of</strong> Candia, and was<br />
cultivated here by Mr. MILLER, in 1739; it is an annual,<br />
and as it does not perfect its feeds with us in the opert<br />
air, unlefs in very favourable feafonSi it is ufually treated as a<br />
green-houfe plant, its feeds fhould be fown in the autumn, a»<br />
it thereby flowers earlier, and ripe feeds are with more cer*<br />
tainty obtained.<br />
