M<strong>of</strong>t <strong>of</strong> the plants <strong>of</strong> this genus are tall and fhewy ; the<br />
one here figured is however, <strong>of</strong> very humble growth, its<br />
flowering ftern in the cultivated plant rarely exceeding fix<br />
inches in height j its flowers are proportionably large, <strong>of</strong> a<br />
blueifh purple colour, and highly ornamental j they make their<br />
appearance in May, and continue fucceflively in bl<strong>of</strong>lbm for<br />
feveral months, hence it becomes a defirable plant to cultivate,<br />
efpecially for the decorating <strong>of</strong> rock-work ; it is very hardy,<br />
requires a north afpeft in the fummer, and to be carefully<br />
watered in dry weather ; will grow in alm<strong>of</strong>t any foil, and is<br />
ufually propagated by planting its roots in autumn.<br />
Grows fpontaneoufly on the-Pyrenean Alps ; in its wild ftate<br />
it is more dwarfifh than our figure reprefents it, its foliage<br />
more woolly, and enriched with various tints, which the plant<br />
l<strong>of</strong>es on cultivation ; fuch fpecimens I faw in the p<strong>of</strong>leflion <strong>of</strong><br />
Dr. R. HALIFAX, <strong>of</strong> Albemarle-Street, who gathered it on<br />
its native Alps.<br />
Was cultivated by Mr. MILLER, in 1731, Ait. Kew. and<br />
molt probably long before that period by PAEKINSON, who<br />
gives a figure and accurate defcription <strong>of</strong> it in his Parad. terr
