The Chironia laccifera, a native <strong>of</strong> Africa, is a plant not<br />

unfrequent in our greenhoufes ; its flowers are curious in<br />

their ftrufture, <strong>of</strong> a lively hue, and fuceeeded by round feed-<br />

veflels, which, when ripe, have the appearance <strong>of</strong> red berries,<br />

whence its name <strong>of</strong> laccata ; if we carefully examine thefe feed-<br />

veflels, we Ihall find that they are not properly berries, for<br />

on cutting them tranfverfly, they are found to be hollow and<br />

to be divided into two cells (
