The Lobelia furinamenfis, a plant newly introduced here,<br />
is minutely defcribed in the Suppl. PI. <strong>of</strong> the younger LIN-<br />
XJEUS, under the name <strong>of</strong> l^vigata^ apparently from the<br />
fmoothnefs <strong>of</strong> its flowers: in the year 1786, Mr. ALEXANDER<br />
ANDERSON fent this plant to the Royal Garden at Kew, from<br />
the Weft-Indies, where it grows fpontaneoufly, as well as at<br />
Surinam; and Mr. AITON has inferted it at the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Hort. Kew. afligning to it a new fpecific defcription, and a<br />
new trivial name: our drawing was made from a plant which<br />
flowered in the Hove <strong>of</strong> Meflrs. GRIMWOOD and Co. Ken-<br />
fington, to whom it was imparted by RICHARD MOLESWORTH,<br />
Efq. <strong>of</strong> Peckham, a gentleman liberal in his communications,<br />
and anxious to promote the caufe <strong>of</strong> Botany.<br />
This fpecies <strong>of</strong> Lobelia is a ftove plant, having a fome-<br />
what fhrubby ftalk, growing to the height <strong>of</strong> feveral feet;<br />
its blbflbms are very large, <strong>of</strong> a pale red colour, and its<br />
Antherae, which might be miftaken for the ftigma, unufually<br />
hairy.<br />
It begins to flower in January and February} and continues<br />
to bl<strong>of</strong>lbm during m<strong>of</strong>t <strong>of</strong> the Cummer.<br />
Is increafed by cuttings.
