ALATERNOIDES africana ericsefoliis, floribus albicantibus<br />

Mr. MILLER, who cultivated this plant in 1731, informs<br />

us, that it grows wild about Lifbon, where it covers extenfive<br />

trafts <strong>of</strong> ground, in the fame manner as the heath does in<br />

this country ; it feldom rifes above the height <strong>of</strong> three feet,<br />

and is much difp<strong>of</strong>ed to become bufhy; its flowers, which are<br />

flightly odoriferous, begin to appear in autumn, and continue<br />

during the winter and fpring; they grow in little heads on<br />

the fummits <strong>of</strong> the branches: their whitenefs, contrafted<br />

with the dark colour <strong>of</strong> the .foliage, forms a pleafing ap<br />

pearance, and entitles this plant, though a common and<br />

long-eftablifhed inhabitant <strong>of</strong> the greenhoufe, to a place<br />

with fuch as may boaft more brilliancy <strong>of</strong> colour.<br />

Its leaves, which thickly cover the [talks, do not well<br />

accord with LINNJEUS'S fpecific defcription.<br />

It'is ufually propagated by cuttings, which ftrike readily,
