The flowers <strong>of</strong> m<strong>of</strong>t <strong>of</strong> the fpecies <strong>of</strong> Jafmine are odori<br />
ferous, trivial names therefore expreffive <strong>of</strong> this quality are<br />
iiaeligible, as wanting character;' the prefent name is pecu-<br />
r;>rly objectionable, inafmuch as feveral other fpecies are<br />
-ready fuperior to this in point <strong>of</strong> fragrance; a leffon for<br />
Botanifcs to abftain from trivial names '<strong>of</strong> the fuperlative de<br />
gree, fuel' >s odoratiffimum, fcetidiffimumt maximum, minimum, &c.<br />
The pre-. nt fpecies, according to Mr. AITON, is a native<br />
<strong>of</strong> Madeira, and was cultivated by Mr. MILLER, in 1730; it<br />
is now a plant common in m<strong>of</strong>t greenhoufes : it will form a<br />
fhrub <strong>of</strong> confiderable fize, which requires no fupport; its<br />
leaves ars gl<strong>of</strong>ly, inclining to yellow, growing for the m<strong>of</strong>t<br />
part tL'-ee together, fometimes pinnated ; its bl<strong>of</strong>lbms, which<br />
are yellow, make their appearance from May to November:<br />
in point <strong>of</strong> hardinefs it is fuperior to many greenhoufe plants,<br />
:md may be propagated without difficulty by cuttings.
