The flowers of moft of the fpecies of Jafmine are odori
ferous, trivial names therefore expreffive of this quality are
iiaeligible, as wanting character;' the prefent name is pecu-
r;>rly objectionable, inafmuch as feveral other fpecies are
-ready fuperior to this in point of fragrance; a leffon for
Botanifcs to abftain from trivial names 'of the fuperlative de
gree, fuel' >s odoratiffimum, fcetidiffimumt maximum, minimum, &c.
The pre-. nt fpecies, according to Mr. AITON, is a native
of Madeira, and was cultivated by Mr. MILLER, in 1730; it
is now a plant common in moft greenhoufes : it will form a
fhrub of confiderable fize, which requires no fupport; its
leaves ars glofly, inclining to yellow, growing for the moft
part tL'-ee together, fometimes pinnated ; its bloflbms, which
are yellow, make their appearance from May to November:
in point of hardinefs it is fuperior to many greenhoufe plants,
:md may be propagated without difficulty by cuttings.
