ClSTUS FORMOSUS. BEAUTIFUL ClSTUS.
Cor. 5-petala.
Capfula.
Oafs and Order.
POLYANDRIA MoNOGYNIA.
Generic Character.
Cal. 5-phyllus, foliolis duobus minoribui
Mr. LEE, Nurferyman of Hammerfmith, informs me, that
in the year 1780, he raifed the Ciftus here figured from feeds,
the produce of Portugal, and as its flowers were uncommonly
beautiful, he was induced to name itformofus.
It approaches fo near to the Ciftus halimifolius in
habit, in the form and colour of its leaves and flowers, that
we are inclined rather to regard it as a variety of that plant,
than as a diftinft fpecies ; at the fame time it muft be allowed
to be a very Unking variety, the flowers being at leaft thrice
as large as thofe of the halimifotiits ufually are, and the whole
plant more hairy : as an ornamental fhrub, it is highly de-
ferving a place in all curious collections.
It will grow very well in the open border in warm flickered
fituations, it may be kept alfo in a pot, by which means it
may more readily be flickered during the winter, either in
the greenhoule or under a frame.
It flowers early in May, and may be increafed by cuttings.
