The investigation into the murder of Evelynn
Derricott remains ongoing, though prosecutors
have decided not to file a John Doe warrant on
the suspected killer of the Tooele woman.
Evidence was submitted in late December
to the Tooele County Attorney’s Office for consideration
on filing a John Doe warrant, which
would flag unique identifiers from the evidence,
such as fingerprints and DNA, if that
information were entered into a national database.
The warrant would be for the person with
the identifiers, rather than for a specific known
person. With a John Doe warrant, the person
matching the warrant information would be
detained by law enforcement in their location,
and the agency that filed the warrant would
then be notified.
Gary Searle, chief deputy attorney of the
Tooele County Attorney’s Office, said the county
will not go forward with filing the warrant.
“It doesn’t affect the case at all because
when we issue a John Doe warrant we issue
it under a DNA profile,” Searle said. “We have
their DNA profile and it’s uploaded into the
national [Violent Criminal Apprehension
Program] database, so when there’s a hit on
that, we’re going to know about it, so a DNA
warrant wouldn’t do anything that we don’t
already have.”
Derricott, 70, was found dead in her home
on Havasu Street on Oct. 7 by a friend who had
become concerned when Derricott did not
come to the door or answer her phone. Her
death, presumed by police to have occurred
on the morning of Oct. 5, was ruled a homicide
by the state medical examiner. Her car, a
1993 Pontiac Grand Am, was found a day later
in Kearns near 5300 West and 5600 South, and
her cell phone was found in the same area
five days later. Evidence from her home, car
and cell phone were sent to a crime lab for
processing.

Tooele County Sheriff’s deputies used a
Taser to subdue a woman who allegedly
fled from them after a traffic stop Monday
night.
Rebecca Cordova, 19, was a passenger in
her tan Hyundai, which was being driven
by Kirk Donahue, 25, when the car was
pulled over near the corner of Elm Street
and Broadway Avenue by a deputy from
the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office for being
double-parked at about 7:30 p.m.
Sgt. Brad Patch of the Tooele County
Sheriff’s Office said the deputy, Clint Fox,
approached the car and could smell marijuana
coming from it.
Patch said Fox asked Cordova and
Donahue to exit the car so he could conduct
a search, and told Cordova he had probable
cause due to the odor of marijuana emanating
from the vehicle, when she denied

Hospital expands ambulance service

Mountain West Medical Center has
added to its ambulance operation with
the purchase of two ambulances and
has plans to lease two buildings in
Tooele and Stansbury Park to house
part of the operation.
Tracy Schaffer, ambulance director
for MWMC, said the ambulances were
purchased in January and arrived at
MWMC on Thursday from a company
in North Carolina called Southeastern
Specialty Vehicles. Both ambulances are
new 2012 Ford F-350 style vehicles.
“The company has never had any
ambulances out West, it was the first
time for them, so it was exciting for
both them and us,” she said. “The
[ambulances] have all LED lights. They
are more fuel efficient and they are better
for the environment. There’s a lot to
them.”

Three years after taking the helm as the first dean
of Utah State University’s Tooele Regional Campus,
Gary Straquadine will step down this summer to
accept a new position at Ohio State University.
“Ohio State made me an offer I could not refuse,”
said Straquadine, who has been serving as dean and
executive director of USU Tooele since May 2009. “I
will miss Tooele and USU.”
Straquadine will depart Tooele on June 29 to
become the head of the newly created department
of communications, education and leadership in the
College of Agriculture at Ohio State in Columbus,
Ohio.
“We are deeply saddened at the news of Gary’s
departure,” said Ronda Menlove, senior vice provost

Although several major, longterm
roadway projects are taking
place across the state this year,
Tooele County residents will only
see two low-impact projects on
state roads locally, both occurring
this summer.
Adan Carillo, spokesperson
for the Utah Department of
Transportation, said crews will
be doing some improvements
to Droubay Road where the railroad
tracks intersect the road just
north of 2400 North. Carillo said
the project was spearheaded by
Tooele County, but UDOT will be
facilitating it. The grade of the
inclination before and after the
railroad tracks on the roadway
will be realigned.
“They’re realigning the grade
so it’s not such a steep incline or
decline. It’s going to be more of a
gradual approach as people cross
the railroad tracks,” Carillo said.
“It hasn’t been advertised [to contractors]
at all yet, but we know it
will be completed before the end
of this year.”
The second project Tooele
County residents will be affected
by will be on SR-36 between
Stansbury Park and I-80. Carillo
said the roadway will be resurfaced
with an inch of open-graded
surface course as part of a routine
maintenance.
“Every road has a certain lifespan,”
Carillo said. “Depending on
the usage, every five to seven years
we have to go back and give roads
some type of maintenance treatment
to extend their life, repair
potholes and things like that.”
Carillo said although he doesn’t
know when that project will start
either — since a bid hasn’t been
awarded yet — it shouldn’t take
more than six to eight weeks to
complete.
“That all just depends on
when we get started and weather
activity,” he said. “We intend to
have it completed by August or
September.”
Once the bids are awarded to
contractors, then UDOT will work
out a timetable with them.
“Contractors will be the ones to
tell us when they are ready to go,”
said Carillo.
He added the best things people
can do when they are driving
through construction zones
this summer is to slow down for
reduced speed limits, be courteous
to other drivers and construction
workers, and stay out
of the way of large construction

Train collides with
towed camp trailer

A train hit a camping trailer
that was crossing its tracks
Sunday afternoon near Knolls,
but no one was injured.
A man was pulling a 23-foot
camp trailer northbound on the
frontage road near I-80 when
he crossed the railroad tracks,
according to Trooper Lance
Christensen of the Utah Highway
Patrol. His daughter, in the back
seat, began crying and distracted
the driver, who then did not see
the train coming, Christensen
said.
The Union Pacific train hit the
camp trailer, dragging the wreckage
from the trailer for several

feet before stopping. The frame of
the trailer stayed attached to the
truck while the top of the trailer
was sheared off, Christensen
said. The truck was not dragged
by the force of the impact.
“The train came along
and demolished the trailer,”
Christensen said. “It was scattered
down the tracks.”
No one was injured, and the
train was undamaged. The crossing
is marked with signs but has
no warning lights or arms.
Christensen said in a decade
of being with the UHP this was
the first time he has seen a train
collide with any vehicle at a
crossing.

A West Jordan woman was
injured after crashing on an
ATV near Knolls Friday afternoon.
Just after noon, Krista
Church, 19, went off a loop — a
high edge with a turn — and
high-centered her ATV on a
rock, which caused the vehicle
to roll, according to Lt. Jeff
Morgan of the Tooele County
Sheriff’s Office. The ATV landed
on Church, who was not wearing
a helmet and was knocked
unconscious. Morgan said
Church’s cousin, who was nearby,
carefully rolled Church over
on to her back and stayed with
her until a medical helicopter
arrived.
Church was flown from the
scene to a Salt Lake-area hospital
with a head injury.
Morgan said ATV areas like
Knolls are flooded with recre-
vehicles.
Carillo said UDOT sets its priority
list for projects around the
state based on a number of things,
like funds available, safety issues
or improvements and maintenance
needed. In Tooele County,
maintenance is UDOT’s main
focus this year. In the next couple
of years, Tooele County residents
will see projects taking place on
the Midvalley Highway and Old
Mormon Trail Road, and on SR-36
for drainage issues. In addition,
plans are in the works to build
park-and-ride lots for bus service
in Grantsville and Stansbury Park.

“On big holiday weekends
like this — Labor Day, Easter
— our population in the county
increases so much because
of all the recreation areas like
this,” Morgan said. “Riders are
so busy watching what other
people are doing and where
they’re coming from that they
don’t do what they’re supposed
to do.”
The last ATV accident at
Knolls was on March 24, when
a 67-year-old man hit some
moguls and flipped over his
handlebars. He complained of
back and rib pain and was flown
to a Salt Lake-area hospital.

SHS band compromise
showed why Stansbury
can best define itself
Like many observers of the Stansbury High School band brouhaha, we
were skeptical when Tooele County commissioners passed the issue back
to the school district, band boosters, and affected residents last month to
work out a compromise. After all, a battle between those who favor 6 a.m.
band practices and those who oppose them had been simmering for two
and a half years. Wasn’t this exactly the type of intractable issue commissioners
were supposed to decide?
In the end, however, the decision reached last week to allow the band to
march under the football field lights without playing at 6 a.m. then start the
music at 7 a.m. was a reasonable compromise that won’t delight either side
in the debate but gives both a bit of what they wanted.
The SHS band issue has captured the interest of the entire county.
Although from afar it might have seemed that people were dickering over a
single hour — to start practices at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. — the debate went to the
heart of how a community defines itself. To many Tooele and Grantsville
residents who have grown up with the tradition of early morning band
practices, the idea of SHS neighbors complaining about the band was
galling — a repudiation of the tolerance a true multigenerational town is
supposed to show its youth. From this perspective, Stansbury was seen as
a loose confederation of newcomers that lacked the cohesiveness to call
themselves a community.
Commissioners could have sided with this perspective, forcing Stansbury
to adhere to the long-standing — though not codified in law — practices
of the THS and GHS bands. And some band boosters would still like to see
that happen, as they push a petition drive that would put a 6 a.m. noise
ordinance change before all county voters this fall.
However, we don’t agree that this is an issue that should be decided on
a countywide basis. Stansbury is not Grantsville or Tooele, and Stansbury
residents should have the right to define their community as they see fit. If
that means later start times for the band, arbitrary conditions like no tubas
on Thursdays, or no high school marching band at all, that’s fine, so long as
consensus, compromise and local control guide the decision making.
As Stansbury continues to grow, its differences from the much older
towns of Tooele County may become more pronounced. But that’s something
to be encouraged and celebrated, not tamped down upon by conformist
notions of what a “good” community must be.
Why is it that only some
murders fascinate media?
Delric Miller IV died in a
hail of bullets a month
ago. When someone fired
37 AK-47 rounds into his Detroit
home at 4:30 a.m., he was mortally
wounded while dozing on the
couch. He was 9 months old. No
one made the multicolored teething
ring he got for Christmas or his
toy hammer into national symbols
of random violence.
Last year, Charinez Jefferson, 17,
was shot and killed on a Chicago
street. “She begged the shooter
not to shoot her because she was
pregnant,” a pastor explained. The
alleged assailant, Timothy Jones,
18, shot her in the head, chest
and back after seeing her walking
with a rival gang member. New
York Times columnist Charles
Blow did not write a column about
Jefferson’s killing as a symbol of
the perils of being a young black
woman in America.
Last June, a stray bullet from
a confrontation on a Brighton
Beach, N.Y., boardwalk killed 16year-old
Tysha Jones as she sat on
a bench. A 19-year-old man, out
for revenge after an earlier scuffle
on the boardwalk, was charged in
the shooting. Tysha’s heartbroken
mother was not featured on all the
national TV shows.
In January, 12-year-old Kade’jah
Davis was shot and killed when,
allegedly, 19-year-old Joshua Brown
showed up at her Detroit house to
demand the return of a cell phone
from Davis’ mother. When Brown
didn’t get the phone, he fired shots
through the front door. No one
held high-profile street protests to
denounce gunplay over such trifles.
Everything about the Trayvon
Martin case in Florida is a matter
of contention. About this, though,
there should be no doubt: If Martin
had been shot by a black classmate,
if he had been caught in a
random crossfire, if he had looked
at a gang member the wrong way,
his death would have been relegated
to the back pages of the local

newspaper. Not a cause, not even a
curiosity. Just another dead young
black man. Nothing to see here.
Please, move on.
Jesse Jackson is right that “blacks
are under attack.” According to a
2005 FBI report, blacks accounted
for 13 percent of the population
and 49 percent of all homicide victims.
In 93 percent of the cases, the
killer was black. Half of the victims
were ages 17 to 29. That works out
to 4,000 murders of young blacks
in one year, overwhelmingly at
the hands of other blacks. In the
communities where these killings
occur there is, to put it in Jackson’s
inimitable terms, no justice and no
peace. There is no comparable epidemic
of half-Hispanic neighborhood-watch
volunteers like George
Zimmerman shooting young black
men.
An injustice may well have
been done in the handling of the
Martin shooting, but let’s not fool
ourselves. Zimmerman could be
arrested, convicted and hanged
tomorrow, and it will have no
effect on the lives of young black
people in communities beset by
social disorder. Whatever happens
to Zimmerman, the drip-drip of
spilled blood will continue, all
but ignored except in the police
blotter. In America, the lives of
young black people are cheap,
unless they happen to fit the right
agenda.

City should learn from repaving
It grieves me to see that the city did
not learn its lesson about chip — or is
that cheap? — seal paving from the first
go around (“Cleanup of failed resurfacing
ongoing,” March 29). What makes them
think that it will work the second time? This
kind of paving is hard on tires and cars, and
is noisy and messy. Whose idea was this to
go back in time to gravel roads? I also resent
my vehicle being used as a pavement compactor.

‘Stand Your Ground’ laws
often invite vigilantism
The controversy surrounding the killing
of Trayvon Martin has officially
entered the political football phase.
Right-wingers have taken to disseminating
a photograph of Martin meant to depict
him less as a young, innocent boy and more
as an original gangsta. That the photograph
is a fake has only proved to be a minor
obstacle. Meanwhile, others have taken to
disseminating the personal information of
Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, online.
There are many problems with this tactic,
ethical and otherwise, the most immediate
being that there is more than one George
Zimmerman. After famed film director
Spike Lee re-tweeted Zimmerman’s address,
an elderly Florida couple was besieged with
hate mail and unwelcome visitors. Turns
out the couple has a son named William
George Zimmerman.
This highlights one of the issues at the
crux of the Martin controversy — the wages
of vigilantism. Among the many problems
involved in naming oneself judge, jury and
executioner is the possibility of misdirecting
one’s wrath.
Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman
who on the tragic night broke every
rule of neighborhood watch in the book,
was by the account of his friends deeply
vexed that his gated community had suffered
a rash of burglaries. One can sympathize
with Zimmerman’s frustration if not
his tactics, which, almost a year before he
shot Martin, involved calling the police to
report a black male “7-9” years old, 4 feet
tall, with a “skinny build” and short black
hair.

Last week, Mitt Romney described
Russia as America’s “No. 1 geopolitical
foe,” prompting Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton to respond, “I think it’s
somewhat dated to be looking backwards
instead of being realistic about where we
agree, where we don’t agree.”
While Romney’s basic sentiment is correct,
Clinton is also right in suggesting that
Romney’s characterization of Russia is both
dated and diplomatically unproductive.
Not to mention that it makes for awkward
dealings later when you inevitably have to
sit down across the table from someone like
Vladimir Putin and ask him a favor.
The way the world works now, and the
way Russia has inserted itself into absolutely
everything, it’s impossible to avoid dealing
with them on virtually any international
issue. Asking for help from someone you’ve
previously labeled an enemy probably won’t
get you far. Sure, it’s OK for me to do it since
I’m probably not going to ever be in a position
to have to ask favors from Vladimir
Putin — although I suppose one never
knows — and it’s probably cool for Romney
to do it if he doesn’t actually plan on being
the park strips will be taken into consideration.
The snowplows threw gravel all over
them and it’ll wreak havoc on residents’
lawn mowers. Speaking of snowplows, what
is going to happen to this Third World paving
the first time a snowplow goes over the
streets next winter? Einstein supposedly
defined insanity as doing the same thing
repeatedly and expecting different results. I
hope the city doesn’t prove him right.

criminal. Zimmerman’s attempt to function
as the police was an act of vigilantism, one

It is deeply tempting to heap our frustrations
on Zimmerman and his actions, but
the fact is that he had been emboldened by
the poorly-thought-out policy prescriptions
of Florida legislators.
Florida has a “Stand Your Ground” statute.
The law expands the notion that one’s
home is their castle, to any public street
being the castle. The law allows anyone
who feels threatened with death or serious
bodily injury to respond with lethal force.
What constitutes a threat of death or serious
bodily injury? In a disturbing number of
cases, that has been left up to the killer.
There’s the case of Greyston Garcia, who
upon seeing someone breaking into his
car chased down the offender and stabbed
him to death. Garcia initially claimed that
he hadn’t stabbed anyone. Then video
emerged, and he pleaded self-defense.
The judge who dismissed charges against
Garcia, citing Stand Your Ground, wrote in
her ruling that Garcia “was well within his
rights to pursue the victim and demand the
return of his property. The defendant had
no duty to retreat and could lawfully pursue
a fleeing felon who has stolen his property.”

It may not be 1956, but the Cold War
never ended just because Joe Biden can

that a Russian nuke might detonate at any
moment about 10 inches from his face. The
Soviet Union has dismantled, but only to
rebuild its sphere of influence through more
“acceptable” means, such as those related
to economic trade and multinational organizations.
Russia has managed to integrate
into both First World power institutions like
the United Nations Security Council, and
developing world organizations. During last
week’s BRICS Summit of emerging nations,

There’s the case of Seth Browning, who,
according to police, shot and killed a man
he followed in attempt to take down his
license plate because he thought the man
was driving strangely. When the man left
his car to approach Browning, Browning
pepper-sprayed him. When the man swung
to defend himself, Browning shot him.
Browning was not charged.
Perhaps saddest is the case involving
Trevor Dooley, who shot and killed a man
in front of the man’s 8-year-old daughter.
The victim had argued with Dooley over
whether a teenager should be allowed to
skateboard in the park.
Lest one think that the Stand Your
Ground law is merely a Florida problem, it’s
worth noting that 25 states now have some
version of this law on the books. Most of
us can identify with the desire to protect
oneself as well as one’s family and property.
But given the flaws in the temperament of
all humans, it’s easy to see how protection
can quickly shade into vigilantism and then
vengeance. Stand Your Ground encourages
such impulses. If such laws continue their
spread, expect more Trayvon Martins to
follow.

Bombast swirls around Russia policy

India, China and South Africa discussed
various ways to increase their prominence
from the current estimated 56 percent of
world growth, for which they’ll be collectively
responsible in 2012, by milking various
first world bleeding-heart “green initiatives”
that funnel them cash.
And in terms of First World influence, it’s
not like Russia is becoming in any way insular.
Quite the contrary. For example, according
to the Kommersant Daily, Russia’s stateowned
nuclear energy company, Rosatom,
is considering picking up a $24 million
investment in the construction of two new
British nuclear plants. Some “foe,” right?
The reality in this case is obviously much
more complex than a sound bite dumbed
down and served up as red meat for the
purposes of a political campaign.

Drivers license test makes overly confident
put their money where their mouth is

enjoy taking tests.
It seems like a simple
enough statement, but
the number of jaws that drop
when I utter it is always somewhat
surprising. However, it’s
the truth. I like the slight butterflies
that come right before
a test. I like that I don’t have
to be trying to learn anything
new, but just remembering
what I have already learned.
And I like the feeling of the
slow, clinical deducing to find
the correct answer.
Accordingly, I follow the tradition
in my family of being a
fairly level-headed test taker.
I get more nervous for homework
assignments than I do
for tests, and I know enough
of the tricks that go along with
test taking to generally do
pretty well.
However, it was just this sort
of thinking that tripped me up
when I got ready to take my
drivers license test. It was then
that I found out that, lo and
behold, I was going to follow
another family tradition of not
being too great at all types of
tests. In fact, I am the third of
five siblings that have taken
the drivers license test so far

close proximity, and Cordova’s

to the threatening nature of the

“She was reaching for something
in her pocket and he
wasn’t sure if it was a weapon or
what it might have been, so the
officer definitely had concerns
for his safety,” Morgan said.
Amber Rubin, who lives in
the area, said she saw the incident
and subsequent excitement.
“She booked it and the cop
went after her and Tased her
and her boyfriend was screaming
and everything,” Rubin
said.

transport Cordova to Mountain

The written portion of the
driving test was much like any
other. There were multiple
choice answers, the occasional
question with a blatant correct
choice, and some that were
more difficult to answer. It
required some studying, time
and lots of legal proof that I
was the person I said I was.
In no time at all, they were
handing over the white paper
informing the world that I was
permitted to join the ranks of
the driving — only accompanied
by a licensed parent or
guardian of course.
Imagine my surprise when
I began to put my knowledge
into practice and realized that
driving was not a skill that was
going to come easily to me.
I felt like Hermione Granger
from the “Harry Potter” series
when she realizes that she
cannot learn to fly from simply
the ambulance was standard
police procedure.
“It’s procedure that once they
get Tased they have to be medically
checked before they go to
jail,” Patch said.

After my first attempt at getting
a license, which was only
after nearly maxing out the
length of time I have before
my permit expires, I felt shaky,
inadequate and like I might
lose my lunch. I had bumped
into the curb trying to parallel
park near the beginning
of the test, which in turn had
caused me to be nervous
enough to forget my left from
right. Imagine my instructor’s
surprise when I changed over
three lanes to go the opposite
direction from the one she had
told me.
It was actually enlightening
to realize, once it was all over,
that I was experiencing testing
nerves. Once enough time had
passed that the event could
become humorous, I shared it
with my friends, expecting to
hear at least somewhat similar
stories.
However, I was shocked to
find out that the majority of
my friends were hardly nervous
at all for their driving
tests, which had been taken
months before my own. They
had also all managed to pass

I returned the next week
to retake my test after days
of practicing maneuvers and
pep talks from those in my
family that were now older
than me and who had become
— despite their, in some cases,
disastrous testing stories
— excellent drivers.
However, after running a
stop sign and rescheduling yet
another testing date, one lesson
stands out above the rest.
Good testing skills can only get
you so far in life. Sure, colleges
might look at ACT scores for
admission, an important final
might determine a grade for
one semester, and, in my case,
a multiple choice test might
allow me limited access to the
roads. However, when it all
comes down to it, if you can’t,
as they say, put your money
where your mouth is, then
even the best test taker won’t
go far.
Ah well, here’s to hoping
that the third time really is a
charm.

search of Cordova at the jail, as
well, Morgan said.

the Tooele County Detention
Center on charges of failure to
stop at an officer’s command,
obstruction of justice, possession
of drug paraphernalia,
possession with intent to distribute,
assault and possession
of a controlled substance.
Donahue was booked into the
jail for charges of driving on a
suspended or revoked license,
possession of drug paraphernalia,
possession with intent to
distribute, obstruction of justice
and parking problem.

Hazel Marie Vorwaller
Warr
1930 – 2012
Our beloved mother and
grandmother returned home to
her Heavenly Father and family
on April 4. She was born April 17,
1930 to August Carl and Hazel
(Kirk) Vorwaller. Mom married
Edward Clayton Warr on Jan
2, 1948. They had 12 children
together. James (Shirlene) Warr,
Teresa (Cecil) Jones, Danny
(Paula) Warr, Howard (Linda)
Warr, Wendy (John) Elorriaga,
Cindy (Scott) Raymond, Cathy
Johnson, Julie (Joel) Devaul,
Brenda (Jimmy) Baldwin, Kyle
(Jazmin) Warr and Cliff Warr.
Mom was preceded in death by
her husband Clayton, daughter
Kim and son Danny, two sonsin-law
Cecil B. Jones and Jerry
L. Howell, and many sisters and
brothers and family members.
Just think of the reunion for
mom. What a wonderful day for
mom to see her mother who
passed away when mom was
only 2 years old. Mom and Dad’s
posterity includes 50 grandchildren,
52 great-grandchildren,
one great-great-grandchild,
and 10 plus step-grandchildren,
for a total of 113 and counting.
We are grateful for her “strong
will” and legacy. We will miss
her dearly. She is always in our
hearts. Her grandchildren will
never forget her. They loved her
so much and she loved them,
all of them, the same. Her cookies
were famous in the family.
She never used a recipe. She
loved picnics with the family,
especially in days gone by, the
Easter picnic. Her family was
the center of her life in good
times and bad times. She was a
member of the LDS church. She
believed in Jesus Christ as her
savior. Our heartfelt gratitude

Keith V. Bissegger
1935-2012
Keith V. Bissegger, age 77,
passed away April 6 in Salt Lake
City. He was born Feb. 19, 1935,
in Montpelier, Idaho, to Vernon A.
and Ada S. Bissegger. He graduated
from Tooele High School and
attended the University of Utah.
He was honorably discharged
from the U.S. Army. Keith loved
fly fishing, hunting — especially
bird hunting behind a good
dog — horseback riding in the
mountains and baseball with his
sons. The family thanks friends
at Alcoholics Anonymous, 24
years ago you saved our dad.

1925 – 2012
Gisela Anne Czakowski, born
on Nov. 7, 1925, passed away on
the evening of April 4 surrounded
by her family. Gisela was
born in Oldenburg, Germany
to Carla (Bartels) Fiedler and
Willi Fiedler. She was the oldest
of two daughters. Most of her
youth was spent in Hamburg
and Berlin, Germany. Due to
the increasing air raids during
World War II, the family had
to move to the southern part
of Germany where she finished
school and graduated in
Gera, Germany. She was baptized
and confirmed at the
Lutheran Church in Hamburg/
Bahrenfeld. After World War
II, she met and later married
Charles F. Cook of the U.S. Army
Janet Madsen Spence
1928-2012
Janet Madsen Spence, age
83, passed away peacefully on
Easter morning, April 8. She was
born Sept. 16, 1928 in Fairview,
and was the first of three daughters
born to Russell Q. and
Leonora Christensen Madsen.
She married William S. Spence
of Rock Springs, Wyo., on June
2, 1950, later solemnized on
June 1, 1951 in the Salt Lake
LDS Temple. She attended the
University of Utah and Brigham
Young University after graduating
from North Sanpete High
School in Mt. Pleasant. She was
a life long and faithful member
of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, serving
for many years in the primary
organization in the Tooele 6th
BLAST FROM THE PAST
The Rowberry family, one
of the first families to
settle the Tooele Valley,
was blessed with artistic talents
uncommon to the time. Most of
their descendants had risen to
local fame as builders, painters
and sculptors, but one, known
as the “Man with a Hoe”, was a
gardener of a very special variety.
His name was Clyde
Rowberry, and both he and his
younger sister were intellectually
disabled. Nonetheless, Rowberry
also became a well-known figure
within the community.
According to the book
“Mining, Smelting and
in Sonthofen, Germany and later
followed him to Tooele where
the couple made their home
together with their son Randy.
In February 1952 she received
her U.S. citizenship. After a long
illness, her husband preceded
Ward and as a visiting teacher.
Mom loved spending time and
visiting with friends and family.
She was one of many family
members who offered up
much of what we know as the
Railroading in Tooele County”

and made it his personal duty
to remove every last stray plant
from Tooele. He would roam the
town from one end to the other
each day, packing a hoe with
him and hacking down weeds

paid him to clear freight
yards, and he would solicit work
in the city cemetery, where he
would clear graves in exchange
for quarters.
But more than anything,
Rowberry loved to talk to other
residents.
“He was looking for someone
who would listen to him,” Atkin
recalled. “I’m sure he couldn’t
read or write. But he had under
that old slouched hat more
common sense about life, more
concern for people ... than most,

Her greatest love and commitment
was to her family and
friends here in the states as well
as in Germany. She made many
trips overseas to help out whenever
she was needed. She had a

Her surviving family includes
husband Ted, only child, Randy

the first dean of USU Tooele
in December 2008 followed
a nationwide search and was
heralded by USU administrators
as a sign of the maturation
of the campus.

Straquadine held a variety of
leadership positions including
associate dean of the College
of Agriculture, vice provost for
academic and faculty services,
and head of the department
of agricultural systems technology
and education.
However, he also has ties to
Ohio State.
Straquadine earned a doctorate
in agriculture education
from Ohio State in 1987 and
has family in the Columbus,
Ohio, area.
“Ohio State recruited me
for this job, I did not go looking
for this opportunity,” said
Straquadine.
Part of the attraction of the
new position included the
opportunity to build a new
department and the challenge
of combining his agriculture
background with his experience
in distance education to
build off-campus opportunities
in Ohio State’s College of
Agriculture, Straquadine said.
USU will again conduct a
nationwide search for a new
dean for the Tooele campus,
said Menlove.
“We hope to start interviewing
in December and have a
new dean on board by spring
2013,” said Menlove. The
replacement process will take a
year because many prospective
candidates have already made
commitments for the coming
academic year, Menlove said.
Initially after Straquadine
departs, Menlove will step in
if not all, of the so-called ‘sane’
and respectable residents of
Tooele.”

Michigan woman hopes for golden touch with Tooele store

necklaces, or other unwanted
pieces of jewelry can be a source
of extra cash and a new locallyowned
store in Tooele will pay
cash for these and other items.
Gold Star USA opened a store
on the north end of Tooele City
last month. It pays cash for precious
metals including gold,
silver and platinum, as well as
diamonds and coins, according
to Nykole Pfaff, owner of Gold
Star USA.
“While pawn shops and some
loan centers may also deal in
gold and other metals, it is our
specialty,” said Pfaff.
Gold Star USA buys jewelry
— including broken, unwanted
or mismatched sets — silver tea
sets, class rings, dental gold,
coins, watches, sterling silverware
and gold and silver bars,
said Pfaff.

Film tackles issues of autistic
children coming into adulthood

One in every 47 children in
Utah is diagnosed with an autism
spectrum disorder — the highest
rate in the country according to
data released by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
in March — but what happens
to these children after they grow
up?
A showing of the film “Autism:
Coming of Age” will provide
some answers to that question
with an inside look at the lives of
three adults with autism and the
challenges they face in their daily
lives. The free presentation will
be held at the Tooele City Library
on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the
community room.
The film was originally produced
by WGBY, a PBS station in
Springfield, Mass., and has been
screened across the nation since
it’s debut last year. Lisa Cohne,
community partnerships manager
for Utah Education Network,
said a year ago “Autism: Coming
of Age” aired on UEN Channel
9 in Utah. Since then, UEN, the
Autism Council of Utah and the
local office of Mass Mutual —
underwriters for the film — have
created a partnership in order to
show the film to different communities
around the state.

“If everyone knows every
detail about the crime, it makes
it more difficult for us to rule
out some of these false claims.
For instance, the details about
the cause of death were how
we knew some bad information
we got was bad,” he said.
“If the media releases all that
stuff, then anyone can give us
information that would lead
us down a longer dead-end
road.”
Wimmer said investigators
have been following up on
leads and interviewing people
possibly related to or with
information on the crime.
“We’re probably contacting
two a week, asking them if they
have any information about
it or asking if they’ve heard
any rumblings of it,” Wimmer
said. “It’s still a very, very active
investigation. And with a little
bit of luck, hopefully sooner
than later, we’ll get a hit.”
As active as it is, the progress
in the investigation over the
last six months has not been
quick.
“It’s slow and tedious. We
get tips and we follow them
up until they’re expired. We’ll
get two, sometimes three in a
week, that the detective has to
track down, and unfortunately
most of them up to this point
come to a dead end,” Wimmer
said. “We still have some stuff
pending, we’re still waiting
for some items to come back
from the lab, and anytime we
get additional evidence we
send it to the lab. It’s one of

raising a child with autism into
adulthood. For families with an
autistic child, a 22nd birthday
can be challenging because some
needed services may no longer
be available as they age out of the
public education system.
“Once they hit 22, they are
kind of lost,” Carter said. “They’re
aged out of the system, and so
this video and discussion are
really valuable.”
The reason the age of 22 is so
important to adults with autism
is because up until that age, they
qualify for special education
benefits through public school
districts. Kimra Paul, who is on
the Adult Services Committee of
the Autism Council of Utah, said
some are able to graduate at the
age of 18 like a typical senior in
high school, but because they
qualify for special education
classes, they don’t have to graduate.
“Some schools have super
senior programs or transitional
programs, but it doesn’t matter
the school district, if they qualify
for special education, then they
can receive special education
services until age 22,” she said.
Boys are almost three times as
likely to have autism than girls,
with one in 32 boys suffering
from the disorder versus one in
85 girls, according to the CDC.
Cohne hopes the film will help
parents to make new connections
and get some answers.

Searle said John Doe warrants
are most often filed when
a case’s statute of limitations
is about to expire, such as in
home invasions or other similar
crimes. Murders, along with
other serious offenses such as
rape, do not have a statute of
limitations, so no measure has
to be taken to keep the case
alive in the legal system.
“Not getting a John Doe warrant
doesn’t change anything,”
Searle said.
Wimmer said although the
department was originally
requesting a John Doe warrant,
the decision of the county
attorneys is a sound one with
which investigators agree.
“It’s a strategic plan,”
Wimmer said. “We feel this
[not having the warrant] would
allow us to have a stronger case
once the [information match]
happens.”

live on his own or in a group setting,

highlighting the importance of
this national epidemic,” Cohne
said. “Business leaders should
also see this film so they can
understand employability issues
and things like that.”
After the film, a representative
from UEN will be available to
host a discussion and answer any
questions people may have.
Paul said the focus on autism
has been almost entirely on children
in the past.
“My husband and I have two
adult sons with severe autism,
that our customers bring into
our store,” said Pfaff. “It is a great
opportunity for people who want
to turn their old jewelry, coins or
other items into cash.”
The store looks like a jewelry
store when customers walk
in with display cases that show
antique jewelry for sale that Gold
Star USA acquires from estate
sales.
The store tests items brought
in to determine their quality and
then pays accordingly. The test
consists of a check for magnetic
attraction and then rubbing a
small part of the item on a stone
to which chemicals are applied
that react with the gold to determine
its purity, said Pfaff.
Customers can then walk out
with a cash payment for their
items.
Pfaff, 24, owns six Gold Star
USA Stores. She started four
stores in the Detroit, Mich.,
area, opening her first store in
2009, before moving to Utah in
February. Along with the store in
Tooele, she also owns a store in
intellectual disabilities and they
are non-verbal,” she said. “Back
in 1988 when we first stared our
lives with autism, nobody knew
what it was. It became our job to
educate our family, neighbors,
school teachers, classmates and
the community. But children
grow up, and now I find myself
re-educating the same people —
family, friends, neighbors, teachers,
peers and the community
— about adults with autism.”
The film is being shown
at other libraries and venues
around the state, Carter said,
adding that she is interested to
see what kinds of ideas it brings
to the Tooele area.
“I hear about autism all the
time personally, and it’s just
become something that maybe
I am behind the curve on and
haven’t been as aware of, but it’s
a huge challenge for families,”
Carter said. “I hear about kids
with autism all the time — but
then they grow up.”

University of Michigan with a

so instead of looking for work I

Pfaff grew up in Michigan
where she has uncle who is in the
precious metal business, but she
has grandparents in Grantsville.
Pfaff completes market
research in each area before
opening a store. The research
includes data on population, per
capita income and ethnic diversity.
However, she said, the decision
to open a store in Tooele was
primarily driven by a desire to be
close to family.
“We have had good days and
slow days since we opened,”
said Pfaff. “In general, tax time
is a slow time for our industry
as people are getting tax refunds
for extra cash right now. We get

Tooele Animal Outreach is a 501c3
nonprofit organization desperately

vet appointments, organizing fundrais-

Paw-Tato Bar Extravaganza
Tooele Animal Outreach will be holding
its first-ever Paw-Tato Bar Extravaganza
on April 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the
Tooele Eagles Lodge #164, 50 S. 1st
Street. The purpose of this event is to
raise money to help benefit in rescuing
homeless pets in our community. A
dinner (potato bar) will be served which
is $10 per person or two for $18, and
each person who purchases a ticket
will be entered into a raffle. We will
have live music, raffles, silent auction,
information booths about the rescue
programs and special guests. Stevie
the Wonder Dog who is a blind service
dog, Halle who is a Vick dog and her
brother Tacoma who is a therapy dog
will be attending. Children 5 and under

The Tooele Co. Historical Society has
recently made a loan agreement with
the Utah State Historical Society to
display an old Lincoln Highway sign that
was on the border of Utah and Nevada.
The unique sign is on display at the
Pioneer Museum.

Emergency 911 day
Get registered today for this great cub
scout pack event. Emergency agencies
of all types will converge at Tooele’s
Elton Park on June 30 for a day of
fun with cub scouts, webelos scouts
and their leaders. Pre-registration is

vided to each boy and leader registered.

Webelos outdoor activity
Webelos outdoor activity registration is

Registration deadline is April 27. This is
a parent/webelos scout activity. Join us

working on webelos activity badges and
spending some quality time in the out-
doors. Cost is $30 (cash or check only).
This includes a snack Friday evening,
hot breakfast and lunch on Saturday for
webelos scout and parent, T-shirt for
the webelos scout and other materials.

Quintana, successful local attorney

open bounce and food drive on May 5

support the Tooele County Food Bank.
Cost of entry is two cans of food per
person. We will have hot dogs, drinks
and cotton candy for sale. There will be
exciting raffles to enter for items such
as a flat screen TV, iPod touch, digital
camera, 20-inch computer monitor, free
bounce house rental and much more.

day long, so bring lots of food for your
family and come get your jump on with

Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary, which was founded
in 1914 to help veterans and their
families, is the backbone of VFW volun-
teer efforts. Eligibility goes to women

be citizens of the U.S. and not less that
16 years old. Women eligible for mem-
bership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars

The Stansbury Park Community
Association is holding elections on May
1 during the monthly meeting at 7:30

Architectural board
The SPCA/ACC is looking for three
Stansbury Park residents (who live
in the ACC boundaries) to be on the

responsible for enforcing the CC&R’s in

Softball camp
THS softball camp is proud to hold
its annual softball all skills camp for
ages 8 to 14. Quality instruction in
fundamentals of all areas of softball
will be conducted. Campers are under
constant supervision by coaches and
staff. Camp is April 14 from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. Lunch and snack provided during
the day. Cost is $40 and includes camp
T-shirt and lunch. Bring water bottles.

Open burning
Open burning in Tooele County started
April 1 and will run throughout the
whole month of April. Those interested
in open burning need to notify their
closest fire department and check with
the state’s Division of Air Quality to

THS softball camp
The Tooele High School softball team
will hold it annual All Skills Camp
for ages 8-14 on Saturday, April 14
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Deseret
Peak Softball Complex. The camp

after two innings and the teams were
scoreless the next five innings in a
seven-inning game. Dallen Erickson,
Kelby Landon, Ky Fisher and Manny
Begay all hit doubles in the second
game. After a game at Stansbury
today, the Cowboys play at Ogden on
Thursday.
Adult soccer league
The first adult soccer league in Tooele
County will begin having games on
Saturday, April 21 from 5 p.m. to
10 p.m. at Deseret Peak Complex.
League organizers said they were
surprised the by amount of teams
that wanted to compete in the league.
“Our goal was to have five or six
teams and we ended up with 10
teams which far exceeded our expectations,”
said Jared Colledge of TC
United Soccer. Teams from Stockton,
Stansbury Park, Grantsville and Erda
will be competing.

Jazz defeat Spurs
The Spurs played without stars Tim
Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu
Ginobili Monday night and the Jazz
took advantage with a 91-84 triump
over Western Conference-leading San
Antonio. Utah’s Devin Harris, who led
the Jazz with 11 straight points in the
fourth quarter, scored a team-high 25
points. The Spurs (40-15) were down
just 84-80 with 2:23 remaining after
Harris’ run, which included a pair of
3-pointers. But they shot just 2 of 7
the rest of the way and committed
a turnover. The victory allowed Utah
to remain one and a half games
out of the eighth and final Western
Conference playoff spot.
New player
Utah Jazz general manager Kevin
O’Connor announced Monday that
the team is expected to sign Blake
Ahearn of the NBA Development
League’s Reno Bighorns to a 10day
contract. Ahearn becomes the
NBA’s 50th D-League Call-Up this
season. Following the transaction,
the Jazz roster will stand at 15 players.
Ahearn is expected to practice on
Tuesday and will travel with the Jazz
when the team faces the Rockets
on Wednesday at 6 p.m. MST (ROOT
Sports, 1320 KFAN) in Houston.

fifth at Skyway

The Ogden Tigers continue
their dominance in Region 11
girls golf with their fourth victory
of the year. The Tigers grabbed
first place at Skyway Golf Course
in Tremonton with a combined
score of 299.
Local teams had a tough
time getting their entire teams
to Skyway Thursday afternoon,
mostly due to spring break, as
Grantsville was the only local
team with a complete team.
The Cowboys finished fifth in
Tremonton with 388 strokes,
which is their third fifth place
finish in four matches.
Katie Johnson led the way for
Grantsville Thursday with a 120,
which was a five stroke improvement
from the previous match.
Val Ortiz followed with a 129
while Cassady Whear rounded
out the scores that counted with
a 139.

Peterson also played at Skyway.
Behunin shot a 143 while
Peterson finished with a 148 to
narrowly miss out on recording
their scores for Grantsville.
Stansbury had a pair of girls
show up and even though it
takes three girls to log a score,

Skyway but did finish their best
as a team the previous week at El
Monte Golf Course in Ogden on
Mar. 29. Tooele finished with a
369 at El Monte to finish fifth for
the first time all season.

top women’s
player in GWC

Former Grantsville High
School and Utah Valley
University basketball star
Sammie Jensen was recently
named Great West Conference
Women’s Player of the Year.
The 21-year-old power forward
from Stansbury Park
helped the Wolverines finish
second at the GWC Conference
Tournament on March 10 in
Chicago to North Dakota.
North Dakota also won the
regular season title with a 9-
1 record while the Wolverines
were tied for second with New
Jersey Institute of Technology,
both with 6-4 conference
records. The GWC includes six
schools spanning the country
in the states of Utah, Texas,
New Jersey, North Dakota and
Illinois.
Playing basketball since her
youth, Jensen worked hard and
received a plethora of awards
not only for her skill in basketball,
but also for her 4.0 GPA in
high school. She was also a talented
competitor in track and
field where she specialized in
sprints and hurdles. Basketball,
however, was always one of the
main focuses of her life.
“I must have been playing
this sport since I was about 3,”
Jensen said.
As a student at Grantsville
High School, Jensen was a First
Team All-state in both 2008 and
2009. In 2009 she was honored
as the Region’s Most Valuable
Player (MVP) and became the
Academic All-state for basketball
in 2009.
“Playing at Grantsville
helped build my confidence

and prepare to be on a team.
School has always been a big
part of my basketball career,”
said Jensen.
For one year before becoming
a standout player at Utah
Valley, Jensen attended and
played for Snow College,
where her team placed fourth
at the Scenic West Conference
Tournament in 2010 and she
was named to the Second Team
All-Scenic West Conference in
2010.
Now a junior at UVU, she
has further proven her worth
as a basketball player. As a college
sophomore and a transfer
to both UVU and in turn the
GWC, Jensen received GWC
Newcomer of the Year and
twice earned GWC player of
the week.
This year, she is the No.
2 scorer in the GWC with a
13.6 points per game average
and a double-digit average in
rebounds. She was also honored
as part of the All-GWC’s
First Team.
“I was surprised because
usually the player of the year
goes to someone on the firstplace
team, which we weren’t,”
Jensen said. “I just had good
numbers.”
Once graduated from college,
Jensen plans to pursue
a career in the medical field.
Unsure yet if professional
basketball is included in her
future, Jensen is certain that
regardless of the level, she will
always play basketball.
“I just love the sport in general.
Ever since I started, my
parents and coaches have
helped me through it, and to
enjoy it more,” she said.

DWR proposes limiting deer
permits for rifle hunters

The Utah Division of
Wildlife Board is proposing to
reduce the number of deer
permits issued to rifle hunters
and increase the number of
permits for archers and muzzleloader
hunters. Less deer
would be taken allowing for
a greater number of trophy
bucks for the future.
Last year, 71,00 permits
were issued for rifle and muzzleloader
hunters. This year’s
proposal would cap rifle hunter
permits at 51,900, but also
allow for 17,300 muzzleloader
permits. Archery permits
would increase from 16,000
to 17,300.
At a meeting in December
2011, members of the Utah
Wildlife Board split Utah’s
five general-season hunting
regions into 30 smaller units.
They also gave Division of
Wildlife Resources biologists
some flexibility regarding the
number of bucks per 100 does
that each of the 30 units will
be managed for.
The number of bucks per
100 does is important because
it determines the number of
hunting permits that can be
offered. Reducing the number
of hunters is the best way
to raise the number of bucks
per 100 does. Reducing the
number of hunters reduces
the number of bucks that are
taken during the hunting season.
The end result of a higher
buck-to-doe ratio is fewer
hunters in the field, but more
bucks for those who hunt.
Fewer permits have to be
cut to keep a buck-to-doe
ratio at a lower level. More
hunters can hunt. But those
who hunt will probably see
fewer bucks.
For 2012, the DWR is recommending
that 14 of Utah’s
30 general deer hunting units
be managed for 15 to 17 bucks
per 100 does.

managed for 18 to 20 bucks
per 100 does.

Trenton Oldfield jumped into

to deliberately cross the path
of the rowers halfway through
the 158th Boat Race in a protest
against elitism and privilege. He
was arrested and later charged
with a public order offense.
With less than four months
until London hosts the
Olympics, the incident has
highlighted concerns about the
safety of competitors at events
where the public will line the
route, including the rowing,
open water swimming, marathon
and road cycling.
“It just takes, and is likely to
be, one idiot,” British Olympic

Stansbury High School defensive

Jeremy Cafe has received a scholarship
to play football at Tabor
College in Hillsboro, Kansas. His
scholarship is for athletics and also
for his work in the classroom. Cafe
has a 3.0 GPA at Stansbury High
School. The highly touted defensive
end led the state in sacks last
year with 13.
“Jeremy was extremely valuable
to us on the field with his speed
rush from the defensive end position,”
said head football coach
Clint Christiansen. “His motor is
continually running — he has one
speed and it’s 100 miles per hour.
He’s also a great leader, a good student
and just a great kid.”
Tabor College is an NAIA school
and finished 3-6 last year, according
to Cafe. But the Tabor College
Bluejays are known for a strong
football program with national
titles in 2004 and 2005.
“Head coach Mike Gardner told
me they run a hybrid defense and
move guys around from the down
line position to linebacker,” Cafe
said. Christiansen said Tabor’s
defensive scheme is similar to what
the Stallions run so Cafe should be
well prepared.
“He’s extremely quick and really
strong for his size,” Christiansen
said. “He’s not a huge player, but
he’s just relentless. By the time the
third and fourth quarters rolled
around last season the opponents’
offensive tackles were worn down,”
the coach said.
“We didn’t hire anybody to help
us with the recruiting process or
go to a website,” Cafe said. “My
parents and I just started looking
at schools inside the state and
outside the state. We made copies
of a highlight film and sent it

you’ve got the live sites, and the
public needs to be protected,”

were awesome.”

Home decor store reinventing
itself after ownership change

A home decor store in downtown
Tooele has changed to
all-local ownership as it prepares
to rebrand itself in the
local market.
Jennifer Hebdon, coowner
and manager of Tooele
Real Deals on Home Decor,
brought Real Deals to Tooele in
October 2009 along with partners
Brittani Lots and Vickie
Benincosa, who own a Real
Deals franchise in Bountiful.
“I used to go shopping at the
Bountiful store all the time,”
Hebdon said. “I loved the business
and just felt that it needed
to be brought to Tooele.”
Real Deals is a franchise
home decor store that specializes
in warehouse pricing
with stores designed around
a mom-and-pop theme. Low
prices are made possible by
keeping overhead costs low
with limited hours, opening
only two days a week.
The franchise has 70 stores
nationwide and is headquartered
in Twin Falls, Idaho. The
Tooele store was the eighth in
Utah.
As the popularity of the store
increased, Lots and Benincosa
began commuted long hours
each week. Wanting to be fulltime,
stay-at-home mothers,
they accepted an offer
in November from Jennifer’s
mother, Jan Baird, to buy out
their interest in the store.
“I have always wanted to
have my own company,” Baird
said. “This was a great way to
both be with family and still
have a business, and to help
people.”
Hebdon and Baird have been
busy redecorating the store.
“We took everything out
and repainted the walls,” said
Hebdon. “The store has been
totally rearranged and new
merchandise added to the
mix.”
One thing that will be missing
at the grand reopening will
be the “man-hole,” an area with
a large couch and television
that was meant to occupy men
while ladies browsed the store,
according to Hebdon.
However, once the store
opened the men were found
shopping so the man-hole
didn’t get a lot of use, so it was
torn out to make room for more
merchandise, Hebdon said.

The store is typically open
on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6
p.m., and on Saturdays from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We’re hoping the re-grand
opening will help to give us a
fresh start and for us to begin
again with the community,”
Baird said. “We hope that we
can share our love of home
decor as well.”

Doug Sagers, director of business
development at MWMC,
said the vehicles will help the
hospital to provide better services
to the community.
“It’s part of our commitment
to the community to provide this
service,” Sagers said. “In the last
year we’ve gone to full-time paramedics
instead of just EMTs. This
enhances our services because
they are able to do more, and
can assure that the community’s
health care needs are met.”
The hospital is also hoping to
lease buildings in Tooele and at
the north end of the valley to
expedite ambulance response
times.
Sagers said typically two to
four paramedics will be stationed
and rotated out in shifts in the
ambulance buildings every day,
365 days a year, with back-up
response and EMTs on call. While
there are ambulances and buildings
in Rush Valley and Vernon,
Sagers said these services will
remain part-time. Sager said
paramedics will not be stationed
at the main hospital, but will be
asked to come in as needed to
help transport patients or assist
with other tasks.
Sagers said the first building
the hospital is looking to lease
is the former Texaco station in
Tooele, located at 950 N. Main
Street.
“We’ve looked at building a
building or leasing a building,
and right now we’re in negotiations
to lease the Texaco building,”
he said. “Our primary
objective is to have the building
at a central location to expedite
response times.”
The Texaco building was a
good fit for the hospital because
it’s in an area that is becoming
more and more the center of the
community, according to Sagers.
“There’s more traffic in that
area, and the paramedics can
access 1000 North going both east
and west easily,” he said. “It puts
our people in a high traffic area
where a lot of accidents occur, so
we’ll have greater coverage and a
quick response time.”
Sagers said MWMC officials are
also looking into leasing a building
in the Stansbury Park-Lake
Point area. Both buildings will
house two ambulances each.
“We think this is a good strategic
move,” Sagers said. “It will
cut our response time down by
at least two to three minutes, and
that’s really good.”

lease and then we will have to
make some renovations to make
it livable for our paramedics,”
Sagers said.
The transaction for the building
in the Stansbury Park-Lake
Point area has not been finalized.
However, once negotiations are
finalized, Sagers said this building
will be a big help to paramedics
in the area.
“A lot of responses to car
wrecks are in the Stansbury-Lake
Point area, so we’d be able to be
more centrally located there,” he
said. “Once we’ve finished negotiations
with the Stansbury-Lake
Point building [owner], then we’ll
begin 24-7 services.”
Sagers said both buildings
should be ready to go within the
next two months.
“We are pursuing the buildings
very aggressively, so we’re
confident we’ll have them ready
to go very soon,” he said.
In the Texaco building, sleeping
quarters, showers and laundry
will need to be added.
“We need all of the things
added that are normally needed
to accommodate a 24-7 operation,”
Sagers said.
The building in Stansbury Park
is already usable and no renovations
are needed, Sagers said.

Grantsville man tells of
planting grass, plotting
lots in the 1960s

Hometown
ifty years ago, the Grantsville City
Cemetery looked quite different from
today. Now a carpet of green punctuated
by manicured trees, the area was once
predominantly bare dirt with patches of
grass and weeds.
But in 1967 the facility was given a landscaping
makeover — largely at the hands of Claude
Sutton Jr.
A thick, thorny growth colloquially called
Russian sand burrs traditionally covered the
ground, and workers would have to clear the
weeds each year before Memorial Day to facilitate
the decorating of graves. During a couple of
years, Sutton said, they burned the weeds away
— which was successful until the fire got out
of hand, scorching about three-quarters of the
cemetery. Workers put out the fire, but the runaway
flames took their toll on the lot.
“Needless to say, it looked bad, or worse, than
it was,” he said.
Sutton, now 89, said after that incident he
was asked by Teryl Hunsaker, then mayor of
Grantsville, what he thought should be done
about the cemetery. Sutton suggested planting
grass, he said, and the mayor told him to do it
despite objections from the city council.
“Some of the council members were against
it — spending money on a cemetery,” Sutton
said. “My boss was against such stuff as that, but
when the mayor says something, [you do it].”
Planting began in the spring of 1967 in a section
on the west end of the cemetery. Sutton said
the grass had grown high enough by Memorial

role, and I was happy to do it,

David (Duchovny, “Mulder”), it
was reverse too, because David

Less popular peas can make for tasty dinner side dishes
Pease porridge hot, pease
porridge cold, pease porridge
in the pot, nine
days old. Some like it hot,
some like it cold, some like it
in the pot, nine days old.
That old Mother Goose
rhyme has been passed down
through the centuries. The
meaning is not particularly
clear to 21st Century children,
but the rhyme has a ring to
it that tickles the ear so it
remains. Many adults remember
it as kids on the playground.
It provided a chant
used while jumping rope.
Young peasant children of
16th Century England probably
also liked the singsong
rhythm of the ditty, but it
would have carried another
meaning to them. Their frequent
meals of pease (pea)
porridge served hot, cold and
in-between day after day may
have prompted such a verse.
Pease porridge actually
evolved from pease pottage,
a very thick porridge made
of dried peas that was served
with highly salted bacon. The
bacon and salt provided the
flavor for this dish. Meat was
too expensive for most peasants
so the salt pork and pea
combination would have been
the substitute. The meals were
based on the pease porridge
with an abundance of whatever
vegetables they could
gather.
A kettle over the fireplace
held the porridge that was
served for meals throughout
the day. There was no refrigeration,
but no one would
want to throw out leftovers.
That would be unheard of
waste with little to replace
it. The mixture would stay in
the pot and the fire would die
down at night. The morning
porridge was cold but ready.

would be added to the kettle.
Indeed, portions of the original
ingredients in the kettle
could have been nine days
old. The cooking and serving
of this mealtime staple would
be enough to horrify modernday
mothers, not to mention
health officials.
The nursery rhyme goes
back for centuries but using
peas as food dates back millennia.
The vegetable would
have been a staple in medieval
Europe.
It is not hard to understand
this vegetable’s popularity in
ages past. It dries and stores
well, so it made a great choice
to save for winter eating. By
the Middle Ages, peas were
stored, dried, used for Lenten
eating and as a hedge against
food shortage and famine.
Dried peas accompanied the
English colonists to America
and were among the first crops
they planted in the New World.
Although they had historically
used them mostly as a dried
and stored vegetable, late in
the 17th Century, colonists
began to regularly eat fresh
peas.
In Middle English, peas were
known as pease. As the English
language evolved, the “s”
sound was interpreted as plural,
so the singular “pea” came
into common usage.
Edible peas include all varieties
that can be eaten with or
without shelling. Some common
varieties include English
peas, snow peas, sugar peas
and snap peas. All types are
tender and relatively sweet
when eaten fresh.

pea varieties are available.
Snap peas fall somewhere
between snow peas and shelling
peas. They are harvested
when the seeds are immature
or after the seeds develop. The
pod is crisp and tender so it
can be eaten along with the
seeds in either case.
Peas are a tasty vegetable.
They have lost the luster the
French ladies of the 1600s
afforded them and are common
enough that most people
think of them with a ho-hum
attitude. They are not in vogue,
and certainly don’t need to
be, but they should get more
esteem than they do. Frankly,
as Rodney Dangerfield would
say, peas don’t get no respect
on the dinner plate.
Peas are rich in nutrients,
vitamins and minerals, like
phosphorus, potassium and
vitamin A, which aids in the
growth of new cells. Peas are
rich in vitamin B (thiamin),
which promotes a healthy
nervous system, and C, which
helps fight infection and contributes
to tissue repair and
general health.
They are high in complex
carbohydrates, but fortunately
rather low in calories. One cup
of snap peas contains about
45 calories. They also contain
nutritious amounts of fiber,
folic acid, amino acids and
protein. The amino acids, broken
down from protein during
digestion, are the building
blocks of the body, and folic
acid contributes to cell growth
and the formation of red blood
cells as well as to digestion and
the nervous system.
Peas taste sweetest fresh, but
they also freeze well for winter
storage. It is possible to shell
and dry peas for use in soups,
but they lose the quality of
their texture.
To freeze English peas, shell
them as soon as you pick them
and then blanch the peas for
one to two minutes in boiling
water, drain and dip in
ice water to stop the cooking
process. Drain again and store
in plastic bags or containers in
the freezer.
You can also blanch them
in the pods and shell easily by
grasping one end of the pod
and sliding your fingers along
the length of the pod pushing
the peas out the other end.
Consume frozen peas within
six to seven months.
Wash snow and snap peas
and remove any strings if necessary.
Then blanch and freeze
in the pods.
Peas don’t have to huddle
on the plate as a boring and
often ignored side dish. Like
other vegetables, peas begin to
lose their nutritive value when
cooked in water, so steam or
stir-fry them for optimum
nutrition. They can be boiled,
but they also lend themselves
to steaming, stir-frying or sautéing,
braising, stewing, microwaving
or eating raw.
They are a good addition
to macaroni salads to add
color and are often added to
casseroles for the same purpose.
Creamed peas and new
potatoes is a classic dish that
celebrates these two vegetables
that are traditionally planted
on St. Patrick’s Day.
Creamed Peas and New
Potatoes
Scrub small new potatoes
with a brush to clean and
partially remove the tender
skin. Boil in salted water until
tender. Boil peas until barely
tender. Make a medium white
sauce, add peas and new potatoes
and serve.
Layered Salad
(makes 12 servings)
1 medium head of lettuce,
shredded or torn into small
pieces
8 ounces baby spinach,
washed and trimmed
1/2 cup sliced green onions
1 cup thinly sliced celery
1 (8-ounce) can sliced water
chestnuts, drained
1 (10-ounce) package frozen
peas
2 cups mayonnaise
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup grated parmesan
cheese
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
(optional)
3 eggs, hard boiled and
chopped
3/4 pound bacon, fried and
crumbled
2 medium tomatoes, cut in
wedges
Mix lettuce and spinach
together in a 4 quart glass serving
bowl. Layer green onions,
celery, water chestnuts and
uncooked peas on top. Spread
mayonnaise over the top.
Combine sugar, Parmesan
cheese, seasoned salt and garlic
powder if desired. Sprinkle
over mayonnaise. Just before
serving sprinkle with eggs and
bacon. Garnish with tomato
wedges. This salad makes an
attractive layered effect in a
clear-glass bowl. Put a layer
of cooked shrimp or chicken
somewhere in the middle to
make this into a main dish
salad.
Saffron Rice with Peas
(makes 8 servings)
1/4 cup butter
1 small onion, finely
chopped
2 cups uncooked long-grain
white rice
1 cup apple juice
3 cups chicken broth
1/4 teaspoon saffron thread
1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan
cheese
1 10-ounce package frozen
baby peas, thawed
Melt butter in a large saucepan
over medium heat. Add
onion and sauté until glazed
but not browned, two to three
minutes. Add rice. Toss with
a fork until rice is glazed.
Add juice and 2 1/2 cups
broth. Cover and reduce heat.
Simmer until rice is tender
and broth is absorbed, about
20 minutes. In a small bowl
or cup, blend saffron with
remaining broth. Stir broth,
cheese and peas into rice mixture.
Cover and remove from
heat and let stand for five to 10
minutes. Serve immediately.

Layered salad is a good make-ahead dish that includes peas. It can be put together ahead of time, sealed over with the
mayonnaise mixture and refrigerated until time to serve.

TELL ME A STORY
(a Swedish tale)

Once upon a time in Sweden
there lived a farmer, Dag,
and his wife, Carolina. Their
farm was one of the finest in the
land. People said the milk from their
cows produced more cream than
anyone else’s milk; their milk tasted
fresher than any other milk. No matter
the weather, no matter the light,
no matter the time of year, Dag
and Carolina’s barn was filled with
fresh hay. Their cows and chickens
were fat and happy. In every way
their farm flourished, and Dag and
Carolina, grateful for their good fortune,
were kind and generous to all.
Naturally, people talked of this
good fortune. The farm had been in
Dag’s family for many generations
and was always the most prosperous
in the land. And so people said they
had a tomte at work, a tomte who
had been working on the farm ever
since Dag’s great-great-great-grandfather’s
time. No one had ever seen
him, of course. People seldom do,
for tomtes like to work in solitude.
But Dag and Carolina were careful
to leave gifts for the tomte -- a bowl
of porridge at Christmas, coins and
cakes at other times of the year. This
is what tradition demanded.
“Never offend a tomte,” Dag’s
grandfather had always said. “If you
do, he’ll leave the house, or he will
begin to make mischief. He’ll tie the
cows’ tails together; he’ll spill the
milk; he’ll break all the hens’ eggs.”
As time passed, Dag became
more and more curious about their
tomte. He was grateful for their
prosperity, but he could not stop
thinking how much he would like
to see the fellow, at least once. One
morning as he sat down to breakfast,
he said to Carolina, “Our tomte
must be ancient, don’t you think?”
She was just taking a loaf of fresh
bread out of the oven, and as she
carried it to the table, she said, “We’ll never know. We mustn’t disturb
him. Remember: They’re easily offended.”
“Ah, yes,” Dag sighed, “but surely just one glimpse wouldn’t hurt.”
Carolina smiled. She knew her husband well, and she understood
that once he had a notion in his head, he would not let it go. As the
days passed, they spoke again and again of the tomte. Finally one
morning Carolina said, “Perhaps you could sneak into the barn at
night and wait to see if he comes. Only promise me that you will be

wind. The barn door opened a
crack. Dag peered out of the loft and
saw a tiny man with wild gray hair
and a long gray beard walk into the
barn and set to work. Dag noticed
the poor fellow’s clothes were tattered
and the cap upon his head
might once have been a bright red,
but was now faded to a pale pink. As
Dag watched, the tomte set to work
cleaning out the stable, brushing the
horse, stacking the hay. He worked
so fast; Dag could barely see what
he did.
And then, just before dawn, he
was gone.
Dag hurried to the house to tell
Carolina of the little man. “It’s true!”
he cried. “He works like a whirlwind,
but it’s very sad: He looks like a beggar.
His clothes are so old, they must
be from great grandfather’s day.”
“We’ll make him a new suit!”
Carolina said. “That is one way we
can thank him.”
She set to work, using the finest
fabric and thread she could find.
Two days later the suit was done -
- a nice blue suit with a fine red cap
to go with it. Carolina wrapped it
and Dag carried it out to the barn.
He left it inside the stable door and
climbed into the loft to hide.
Once again at midnight Dag
heard a whoosh of wind. The barn
door opened and in walked the
tomte. When he saw the package,
his eyes lit up with delight and he
quickly opened it.
“A new suit!” he cried, and Dag’s
heart filled with joy, for the tomte
sounded so happy.
But he set it down and went to
work, cleaning the stables until they
were cleaner than they had ever
been, brushing the horse until he
gleamed. He milked the cows, fed
the chickens and hens, stacked the
hay, and when he was finished, he
took off his tattered clothes and
dressed up in his brand-new suit.
And then, to Dag’s amazement,
the tomte walked to each of the animals
one by one and whispered something in each animal’s ear.
When he was finished, he ran to the door and turned once more.
“Farewell, my friends!” he said. “Now that I’m a gentleman, I’ll have
no need to work!”
From that night on, the tomte did not return, but Dag and
Carolina did not despair. They were grateful for the memory of the
tomte. So they continued being generous, while their farm continued
to prosper.

good. You should keep going on

Another section was planted
by that fall, Sutton said.
During that winter, Sutton
also was tasked with mapping
out graves in the cemetery — a
task necessitated after the loss of
those records. Some of the graves
had been lost under bushes and
shrubs planted nearby, and others
were marked by a mound
over the grave, which could
sometimes be skewed slightly to
the left or right of where the person
was actually buried.
“There were a lot of graves
that nobody knew about. They’d
been lost in bushes that had been
planted years ago. It was kind of
like a jungle,” he said. “It was my
job to go up there and say, ‘OK,
this lot here belongs to so-andso,
and we do have some markers
here, but there are some markers
here that don’t have names on
them.’”
Some of the stones used by
early settlers for marking graves
did not weather well, and the
names once carved into them
had worn away long ago.
“That was the problem — who
belongs to that stone, and so
forth, and that was all over the
cemetery,” Sutton said. “Some
were obvious but if there was no
marker you’d have to guess.”
Those stones were largely
located in family plots, and
descendants helped shed light
on who was likely buried where.
Pieces of the lost records were
also found, giving more clues
to the puzzle. A few, though,
remained a mystery.

Elder Eric Edmund Gutowski
has recently returned home
after successfully serving a mission
for the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder
Gutowski served in the Mexico
Puebla Mission. Elder Gutowski
will speak April 15 at 10:50 a.m.
at the Bayshore Ward chapel,
located at 5899 Bayshore Drive,
Stansbury. A luncheon will be
held afterward at the Gutowski
residence. Elder Gutowski is
the son of Gerard and Faith
Gutowski. He is the grandson
of Edmund and the late Cecilia
Gutowski, and Rosario and the
late Regino Concepcion.

Sutton was mainly responsible
for the cemetery from 1962 until
his retirement in 1990. During
that time, he said, he got to meet
plenty of interesting people and
had some unusual situations.
While digging a grave for Sutton’s
recently deceased uncle on the
northwest corner of the cemetery,
one of the workers came
across what appeared to be a
bone. Careful excavation of the
area revealed the lower half of
a skeleton, which Sutton said
he estimated to have been a
small American Indian woman.
Though the portion of the skeleton
they found was quite intact,
all the way down to the bones in
the feet and toes, no trace of the
other half of the body was found,
Sutton said.
“We figured the body was
washed from somewhere else,”
he said, noting the body was surrounded
by bits of sagebrush and
other debris.
After the burial of Sutton’s
uncle, he said, the discovered
bones were buried nearby.
People would also sometimes
want the bodies of loved ones
transferred from pioneer-era
burial sites in backyards to plots
in the cemetery. Sutton said such
a transfer was not unusual, and
often happened when the person’s
descendants were planning
on selling the family property.
“There were quite a few. They
didn’t have a cemetery,” he said.
The cemetery has expanded
since the grass was originally
planted. Sutton said while he
enjoyed his work, he is glad he
is no longer the one to dig graves
and keep the area looking its
best — though it is interesting
to watch the ongoing progress of
the cemetery.
“Now they’re talking about
putting a cemetery in back of the

“It is interesting [to see it grow].”

THS cheerleaders do well at
nationals
The Tooele High School cheerleaders
recently competed at the
USA Spirit Nationals cheerleading
competition in Anaheim,
Calif., on March 31 and April 1.
The varsity squad qualified for
finals after the preliminary round
of competition on Saturday and
took home third place after the
final round of competition on
Sunday. Tooele was the only
Utah team in their division. They
represented their school, county
and state very well. We are proud
of all of their accomplishments
this year. THS cheerleading tryouts
for the 12-13 school year
will be this week through April
12. Tryout clinics will be held
each day until April 11 from 3 to
5 p.m. in the THS gym. Tryouts
