Big SIR: Bob Zimmerman - 253-7612
Hello, from Piedmonte, a northern Italian wine country. I’m wrapping up the first half of
my term as your Big SIR and need a vacation from all my hard work.
**** June, 2013****
A Nonprofit Public Benefit Organization for Retired Men Devoted to the Promotion and Independence of Dignity of Retirement
It’s been a good six months. We successfully moved from Sierra View to the Timbers
(thank you Little SIR Mark Stuart). Our outdoor activities such as golf, bocce, fishing, and
tennis are near record participants. Travel, cards, photography, gourmand cooking, even
bowling (yes, we do have a bowling program!) remain strong; and there may be memorabilia
and backgammon groups in our future. The only negatives I see are contributions
trailing previous years and lunch attendance down a few percent. Some of you think the
‘drawing’ replaces the Gold Pan, it doesn’t. The branch operates on contributions for its mandatory expenses; the
drawing allows some of our programs to sizzle.
The State SIR organization has shrunk from ~30K to ~20K members over the last few years. In spite of our success,
because our branch only grew by a net 1% last year even though we added 37 new members, the State has
put Branch 98 in a watch group. In the past, Branch 98 has pushed the capacities of our lunch facility, but today
we could easily seat 2-300 at Timbers. So I’m asking each of you to introduce SIRs to a friend and bring him to
lunch.
It takes a lot of people to make the branch run smoothly, and I’ve been highlighting one or two these folks every
month. This month it’s impossible to make it a surprise because it’s Wayne MacDonald, and he’s volunteered to
publish this newsletter for Giorgio who’s in Italy with me. Wayne is our database administrator and responsible
for keeping our names and addresses and the directory accurate. Great Job!
Little SIR: Mark Stuart—788-0274
I promised that the Ladies Day event would be “one to remember”, good food, surprises
gifts for the ladies and excellent entertainment. Co-event chair John Conger and I
have received many positive comments from branch members telling us how much
they and the lady’s enjoyed this year’s event. For all of you who came out and attended
a very big “Thanks” for helping make this event such a success. Many of you also
commented how much you enjoyed the entertainer, Robert Greene, even wanting to
have him entertain at one of your events. You can find more information about him
and his music at www.robertgreenemusic.com.
Our June luncheon will be held on Wednesday June 12th at our new meeting location,
The Timbers at Sun City Roseville. The main entrée will be Ham in a pineapple glaze. There is a map to our new
location on our branch website. Remember to mark on your calendar’s that our August meeting will be held on
the August 7th, the first Wednesday in August instead of our normal second Wednesday. Since you have your
calendars out another reminder that our annual picnic is going to be held on September 10th. More information
on this event will be included in future newsletters.
Our June speaker will be Bill Roughton of the Aerospace Museum of California at McClellan Park. Bill is an event
speaker, guide and docent at the museum. He will be here to updates us on the many changes at the museum
with new exhibits, the full motion flight simulator, planes including the latest new plane exhibit, a jet airliner,
space vehicles and astronaut memorabilia, learning center classes for K-12th grade students and more.

I was born and raised in San Jose , Ca. The only time
I left San Jose was to attend Cal Poly in San Luis
Obispo, Ca. When I returned from Cal Poly, I went to
work in my dad’s retail/wholesale paint business
located in San Jose. We worked together in the business
for 12 years. When he retired he joined a local
SIRs group which he enjoyed very much. In the late
70’s I decided to sell my stores and go to work as a
regional sales manager for the Valspar Corporation.
From this point on I traveled a lot selling architectural
and industrial coatings. I was able to see a lot of our country as well as working in Mexico and
New Zealand. I retired with PPG Industries where they relocated me from San Jose to the Sacramento
area in 2007 to handle Northern California and Nevada. My wife, Paula had retired after
35 years teaching in the Cupertino School Dist. She was foot loose and fancy-free and was all
over moving to the Sacramento area. We bought a home in the 12 Bridges area of Lincoln and
really enjoy the slower pace up here. We have a son and daughter both living in the Modesto
area. They are both teachers and between the two we have 5 grandkids. I enjoy playing golf with
the SIRs group. I am also a big San Jose Sharks hockey fan. My real passion is auto racing. I have
raced two high performances Corvettes and a SS Camaro. Paula and I also raced Shifter Go-Karts,
which are capable of 100 mile an hour speeds. I have really enjoyed my two year plus with the
SIRs and look forward to many more years of enjoyment with the group.
