Health Science Library Meta-Directories
Ask NOAH
http://www.noah-health.org/
NOAH is a consortium of several New York libraries and institutions and
provides rapidly updated, neutral information on a range of health topics. It is
available in English and Spanish. Click on the relevant topics, Complementary
and Alternative Medicine or Heart Disease and Stroke. The latter includes some
complementary approaches to care.
Health Sciences Library System
http://www.hsls.pitt.edu/guides/internet/
This collection of Internet guides is compiled and maintained by the Health
Sciences Library of the University of Pittsburgh. Click on Alternative Medicine.
HealthWeb
http://healthweb.org
Another useful meta-directory from a consortium of health science libraries,
contracted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
MedlinePlus
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus
MEDLINEplus, a project of the NLM provides evaluated resources on more
than 500 diseases and conditions. There are a medical encyclopedia and
dictionaries, health information in Spanish, extensive information on
prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and
links to thousands of clinical trials. Click on Health Topics then A and scroll
down to Alternative Medicine.
MedWeb
http://www.MedWeb.Emory.Edu/MedWeb/
Select Subject Index in the sidebar and then Alternative and Complementary
Medicine. By selecting Focus Further, you access a further categorized listing.
An effective way to gain an overview of health resources on the World Wide Web is
to use one of the Internet meta-directories that provides categorized listings of relevant
sites. Health science libraries or consortia usually compile these free public domain
resources. Directories include academic sites, online journals and newsletters,
professional organizations, information services, and self-help and discussion groups.
There is considerable overlap between the lists. Few of them provide crosslinking
between complementary and alternative resources and conventional specialties.
