Major Databases
Major Databases for Published Research
PubMed
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi
PubMed is a service of the National Library of Medicine, providing access
to more than 12 million MEDLINE and additional life science journal articles.
A new feature, CAM on PubMed, developed in partnership with the National
Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at NIH, provides a
subset of more than 220,000 articles relevant to CAM. Go to PubMed and
click on the “Limits” function (underneath the search box). From the Subsets
pull-down menu, select “Complementary Medicine,” and then search from
within this subset by typing in relevant keywords, such as “heart” or
“cardiovascular.” Limit your search further with additional keywords and
limits.
IBIDS
http://ods.od.nih.gov/databases/ibids.html
International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS) is
a database of published, international, scientific literature on dietary
supplements, including vitamins, minerals, and botanicals, produced by the
Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
You can select from peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed literature for
searches.
HerbMed
http://www.herbmed.org
HerbMed is a project of the nonprofit Alternative Medicine Foundation and
presents categorized information on more than 160 medicinal herbs,
compiled by pharmacologists and pharmacognosists. There is a dynamic
updating feature that automatically generates live PubMed updates for each
category of information. Search on heart AND cardiovascular and any other
choice of keyword.
Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases
http://www.ars-grin.gov/duke/
This site links to Dr. James Duke’s US Department of Agruculture (USDA)
databases, as well as other related databases.
Ongoing Clinical Research and Trials
CRISP
http://www.crisp.cit.nih.gov/
Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects (CRISP) is a
searchable database of NIH-funded research and intramural research
projects. It covers mainly conventional biomedicine but contains a growing
proportion of CAM projects and clinical trials. The best search strategy may
be to initially confine your search to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute.
