RECOGNITIONS<br />

President Forsyth recognized among those in attendance: Vice Chancellor<br />

for Research Edwin L. Goldwasser, Urbana; Mr. Joe C. Sutton, editor <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Illinois</strong> Alumni News and member <strong>of</strong> the faculty and staff for thirty<br />

years, who is retiring at the end <strong>of</strong> the present year; and Vice Chancellor<br />

Morton Weir, Urbana. Dr. Weir has resigned from the <strong>University</strong> and<br />

will assume new duties as director <strong>of</strong> the Center for the Study <strong>of</strong> Youth<br />

Development at Boys Town, Omaha, Nebraska, effective July 2, 1979.<br />

BUSINESS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY<br />

President’s Reports<br />

President Corbally presented a report on selected topics <strong>of</strong> current interest,<br />

copies <strong>of</strong> which were distributed at the meeting, and a copy was filed with<br />

the secretary <strong>of</strong> the board.<br />

Resignation <strong>of</strong> Chancellor Gerberding<br />

President Corbally commented on the recent announcement that Mr.<br />

Gerberding has been elected president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Washington,<br />

effective during the summer <strong>of</strong> 1979. <strong>The</strong>re were general statements <strong>of</strong><br />

regret at Mr. Gerberdinp’s resignation and expressions <strong>of</strong> appreciation<br />

for his service to the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> president reported that steps now are under way leading to the<br />

appointment <strong>of</strong> an acting chancellor, effective around the first <strong>of</strong> July;<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> a search process in cooperation with the Urbana<br />

Senate for the selection <strong>of</strong> a chancellor: and completion <strong>of</strong> the effort to<br />

select a vice chancellor for academic affairs at Urbana. Additionally, he<br />

emphasized, as the board’s work continues in the search for a new presi-<br />

dent, he was prepared to continue to serve for a period beyond September<br />

1, 1979, to insure that it would be feasible for a new president tQ assume<br />

<strong>of</strong>ice at a convenient and practicable time. He had assured the board <strong>of</strong><br />

this commitment when he had announced his resignation.<br />

OLD AND NEW BUSINESS<br />

Report <strong>of</strong> the General Policy Committee<br />

Mr. Howard, acting for Mrs. Shepherd, reported on the action <strong>of</strong> the<br />

General Policy Committee <strong>of</strong> Thursday, April 19, 1979. <strong>The</strong> committee<br />

considered a proposed institutional response to a discussion paper, “Stu-<br />

dent Access and Choice,” prepared by the staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Higher<br />

Education. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> statement, drafted by President Corbally and<br />

reviewed by the general <strong>of</strong>ficers and the trustees, was recommended<br />

unanimously by the committee. On motion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Howard, the <strong>Board</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Trustees</strong> approved the statement for submission to the executive direc-<br />

tor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Higher Education.
