Imports <strong>of</strong> mechanical wood pulp, although below the<br />

inward movement <strong>of</strong> a year ago, were, in March, 28<br />

per cent larger than in the previous month, while for<br />

the first quarter <strong>of</strong> the current year imports aggregating<br />

57,849 tons represented a decrease <strong>of</strong> 32 per cent<br />

from the same period <strong>of</strong> 1923. Chemical pulp<br />

imports, although larger than in March, 1923, recorded<br />

a decrease <strong>of</strong> 30 per cent in March from the previous<br />

month, while the total imported, during the first<br />

quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>1924</strong>, amounting to 299,299 tons, recorded<br />

an increase <strong>of</strong> 1 per cent over the first three months<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1923.<br />

The production <strong>of</strong> newsprint paper in March,<br />

although below the output <strong>of</strong> the same month <strong>of</strong> last<br />

year, registered an increase ovor February <strong>of</strong> about 1<br />

per cent, while total production <strong>of</strong> newsprint during the<br />

period ending March 31, amounting to 367,147 tons,<br />

recorded a decline from the same quarter <strong>of</strong> 1923<br />

amounting to 1 per cent. Shipments <strong>of</strong> newsprint<br />

paper in general showed the same movement as production<br />

both as respects the previous month and the first<br />

quarter <strong>of</strong> 1923. Newsprint imports in March were<br />

larger than cither the previous month or a year ago,<br />

while for the quarter just closed the total inward<br />

movement into this country <strong>of</strong> newsprint paper<br />

amounted to 332,835 tons, representing an increase<br />

<strong>of</strong> 8 per cent over the imports for the same period <strong>of</strong><br />

last year. Stocks <strong>of</strong> newsprint held at mills continued<br />

to accumulate.<br />

The total output <strong>of</strong> paper boxes in March recorded<br />

an increase over both the previous month and the<br />

same month a year ago, while for the first quarter <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>1924</strong> the paper-box output was 2 per cent higher than<br />

in the same period <strong>of</strong> 1923. The operating time <strong>of</strong><br />

paper-box manufacturers was computed at 83 per cent<br />

<strong>of</strong> normal, as against 78 per cent in February and 82<br />

per cent a year ago, while prices <strong>of</strong> finished boxes in<br />

March were about 10 per cent below those prevailing<br />

a year ago.<br />

BUTTONS<br />

The productive activity <strong>of</strong> manufacturers <strong>of</strong> freshwater<br />

pearl buttons increased from 43.5 per cent in<br />

February to 44 per cent in March, which may be com-<br />

pared with 52.8 per cont for a yoar ago. Stocks <strong>of</strong><br />

buttons continued to decline, but at the end <strong>of</strong> March<br />

wore about 6 per cent greater than ihoso held by<br />

manufacturers a year ago.<br />

BUILDING MATERIALS<br />

Industrial construction costs in March, although<br />

1 per cent below a year ago, showed no change from<br />

the previous month, whilo tho general index <strong>of</strong> building<br />

costs recorded a 1 per cent decline in March, bein 200<br />

Contracts awarded for building construction in 27<br />

Northeastern States called for an expenditure <strong>of</strong><br />

§386,483,000, as against S259,2f>4,000 in February<br />

and S333,518,000 a year ago. Residential construction<br />

represented 53 per cent <strong>of</strong> the total awards in<br />

March, as against 50 per cent in February and 49 per<br />

cent in March, 1923, while the March lettings for<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> business buildings represented 15 per<br />
