CAREER:
• Heather enjoyed a successful end to her junior career when she won gold at the
Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008 and lifted the US Open Junior trophy in 2009
(including a comprehensive 62 61 win over No. 2 seed and junior Wimbledon champ
Lertcheewakarn in the QF) as the No. 11 seed.
• She played her first senior tournament in 2009 and won her first title in Frinton in
July. Heather made swift progress in the senior game, making her Grand Slam debut at
Wimbledon in 2010 and capping off the year by winning her first $50k tournament in
Toronto, and representing Guernsey at the Commonwealth Games.
• She started 2011 off strongly, qualifying for and reaching the quarter-finals of two WTA
tournaments in Auckland and Memphis. Heather qualified for the French Open and won her
first round match to become the first British woman since 1994 to win a main draw match
at Roland Garros. An elbow injury prevented her progressing beyond the 1r at Wimbledon,
but by September, and at a career high ranking of No.87, Heather was accepted by right
into the US Open where she put up a remarkable 36 75 62 fight against Sharapova on Arthur
Ashe stadium 2:34 where she was two games from winning.
2012-13
• In Feb. 2012, Heather was called up for her second Fed Cup tie at the Euro/Africa Zone Group
I competition in Israel, where the team advanced to the World Group II Play-offs for the very
first time.

• Her year came alive at Roland Garros, where as a qualifier, she reached the 2r (d. Vesnina);
reached 3r Birmingham (d. Baltacha) and also 3r of Wimbledon (first British woman since
Baltacha in 2002 to do so)
• During the summer, d. Sloane Stephens in Stanford en route to 2r where she won the
doubles title w/Erakovic (also won in Dallas a few weeks later) and on Monday July 16,
Britain had four women ranked inside the world’s Top 100 (with Watson, Robson, Baltacha &
Keothavong) since March 1991.
• As a qualifier, reached 2r of Tokyo Pan Pacific (d. Lisicki) and kept Sharapova on court for
3:09 (was three games from winning at 76 34). Two weeks later, won her first WTA singles
title (and 1st by a British woman since Sara Gomer won 1988 Aptos) at the Japan Open in
Osaka, in a thrilling 3:12 final against Kelly Chan 75 57 76(6), after her opponent had served
for the opening set, Watson squandered a MP serving at 5-3 in the 2nd, came from 3-5 down
in the third, saving 4 MPs on Chan’s serve in the 10th game including three in a row at 40-0.
Cracked the Top 50 after the win.
• At the 2013 Australian Open saved 3MPs in another 3:02 marathon match vs. Pervak in 2r
to reach the 3r (and reached world’s Top 40 first time after the tournament. In February as
British No. 1 for the first time, led GB into the World Group II Play-off’s for the second year
in a row; two weeks later reached QF in Memphis.
• In March after consecutive opening round losses at Indian Wells and Miami, discovered she
was suffering from Glandular fever and was off the Tour for two months until returning at
Roland Garros.
