CAREER:<br />

• ‘Bally’ has been at the forefront of British women’s tennis for over a decade, although her<br />

early career was marred by injury (back) and illness (liver), the last few years have seen<br />

her fulfil her potential.<br />

• Under the close guidance of her coach Nino Severino, she broke into the world’s top 50 for<br />

the first time in her career in September 2010, winning $100k event in Midland USA,<br />

reaching 3 WTA QF, enjoying three Top 10 wins over Li Na (twice), and French Open champ<br />

Francesca Schiavone (No. 8) at Istanbul.<br />

• Her marathon 76(6) 26 76(7) 2 hour 50 minute win over Li at Indian Wells (saving three MPs<br />

in final set TB after trailing 1-5 and 4-6) was her first Top 10 win ever and first Top 40<br />

victory since beating Coetzer at Wimbledon eight years earlier.<br />

• In 2011, Bally made all four Grand Slams directly, recorded her best ever clay court season,<br />

including a run to SF of the ITF $100k in Cagnes sur Mer and 1st MD win at Roland<br />

Garros. Won 10th ITF title at $100k Aegon Trophy in June; reached a 4th WTA QF at Dallas<br />

and went on to finish inside the Top 50 - first British woman to do so since Durie 25 years<br />

earlier.<br />

• Best career results have come on grass in the UK, reaching 3r of Wimbledon as an 18 year<br />

old in 2002, stretched No. 11 Dokic to 3s the following year and 64 64 v Capriati in<br />

2004; Also winner in 2011 Nottingham, at Eastbourne, QF in 2010, stretched former<br />

Wimbledon champ Martinez to 3s in 2005 and qualified in 2007 reaching 2r with nail-biting<br />

win over Keothavong.<br />

2012-13<br />

• Did not play following 2012 Olympics (underwent surgery October 8, 2012 to remove a bone<br />

fragment on her right foot) returning eight months later in Pelham-GA, USA.<br />

• Bally also continues to represent Great Britain in Fed Cup – the WG II Play offs in <strong>2013</strong><br />

marked her 38th career tie playing every year since 2002; played a vital role in steering GB<br />

out of zonal competition in 2012 winning her three singles matches in straight sets over<br />

Peer, de Brito and Krajicek.<br />

PERSONAL:<br />

Born in Ukraine, Bally was raised in Paisley and now resides in Ipswich with Severino, whom she<br />

is engaged to be married later in <strong>2013</strong>… Began playing age 10; mother Olga is a former Russian<br />

pentathlete and father Sergei is a former footballer, older brother Sergei was also a pro footballer…<br />

Founded Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis (EBAT) in Ipswich to get disadvantaged girls<br />

6-10 started in tennis.<br />
