Andy Lapthorne was runner-up at the NEC Singles Masters at Mechelen, Belgium while Gordon Reid was a finalist at the prestigious Invacare Doubles Masters in Amsterdam. DECEMBER 2012 Andy Murray came third at the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards while Kyle Edmund was shortlisted for the junior award. JANUARY 2013 Laura Robson and Heather Watson both reached career high rankings of 47 and 50 respectively. British No.1 Andy Murray retained his Brisbane International title with a 7-6(0), 6-4 win over Grigor Dimitrov. The 25 year-old top seed closed out victory in just over an hour and a half against the Bulgarian world number 48 in the final. The Aegon British Tour at Graves Tennis & Leisure Centre, Sheffield concluded with Richard Bloomfield and Anna Fitzpatrick claiming victory in the men’s and women’s singles events respectively. Georgina Axon reached the quarter-finals and the semi-finals of the girls’ singles and doubles respectively in the Salk Open, Sweden. Top seeds Colin Fleming and Bruno Soares claimed the Heineken Open men’s doubles title edging Johan Brunstrom and Frederik Nielsen 7-6(1), 7-6(2) in Auckland. Josh Goodall and Lisa Whybourn claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles at the Aegon British Tour Billesley. Whybourn defeated top seed Tara Moore 7-5, 6-0 for the crown, while top seed and 2012 Aegon British Tour Masters Champion Josh Goodall overcame second seed Dan Evans 6-4, 6-2. British No.1 Lucy Shuker reached the fourth Super Series doubles final of her career on the penultimate day of play in Sydney after partnering Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis to a hard fought 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Yui Kamiji of Japan and Ju-Yeon Park of Korea. Tara Moore and Marcus Willis captured the first Aegon GB Pro-Series titles of the year at Scotstoun Leisure Centre, Glasgow. Andy Lapthorne and Gordon Reid won the quad singles and the men’s doubles titles as the Melbourne Open came to a successful end for the Brits. World No.4 Lapthorne made a victorious start to 2013 after a confident performance saw him beat world No.5 Anders Hard of Sweden 6-1, 6-2 in their decisive round-robin match. World No.1 Novak Djokovic put Andy Murray’s hopes for a second Grand Slam title to an end after coming through the Australian Open final in three hours and 40 minutes. Djokovic, 25, overcame the British No.1 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena to seal his sixth major, his fourth in Australia. Andy Lapthorne finished runner-up in his first Grand Slam quad singles final after a brave effort ended in a three set 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat by American world No.1 David Wagner at the Australian Open. Ed Corrie claimed his first professional singles title at the Aegon GB Pro-Series in Preston. Corrie, 24, defeated American Christian Harrison 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the ITF 10k event. Alfie Hewett completed a successful double defence of his boys’ singles and doubles titles at the Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters after defeating Carlos Anker of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-2 in the singles final in Tarbes, France. FEBRUARY 2013 Great Britain and Russia were the only nations to reach the Tennis Europe Winter Cups final rounds in all six categories. Christian Harrison won his maiden pro singles title at the Aegon GB Pro-Series Sheffield after a three set win over Britain’s Ed Corrie. In a repeat match up of the previous week’s final in Preston, 18 year-old Harrison was stretched to the wire in his 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) win. The Aegon GB Fed Cup Team won through to the World Group II play-offs in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas after winning four straight matches in Europe/Africa Zone Group I. The British team, captained by Judy Murray, and consisting of Heather Watson, Laura Robson, Anne Keothavong, Jo Konta and Elena Baltacha (non-playing) sealed their victory with a 2-0 win over Bulgaria in their final match, following singles victories for both Watson and Robson. The 12U boys’ team of Jack Draper, Jacob Fearnley, George Loffhagen and captain Nick Brown won the Tennis Europe Winter Cup in Roznov pod Radhostem, Czech Republic, beating Poland, Belarus and Serbia along the way. James Ward made the final of the men’s ATP Challenger singles at the Adelaide International, Australia, before suffering a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to home favourite Matthew Barton.
