Third Sunday of Easter
Growing through the
Sunday Scriptures
May 7, 2006
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Acts of the Apostles 4:8-12
Psalm 118
1 John 3:1-2
John 10:11-18
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John:
April 30, 2006
Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd
lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not
a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf
coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf
catches and scatters them. This is because he works for
pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good
shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as
the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will
lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do
not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they
will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
This is why the Father loves me, because I lay
down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it
from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to
lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command
I have received from my Father.”
Focus Questions:
1. Jesus says, “I know mine and mine know me.” Describe
how you have grown in your knowledge of
Jesus.
2. Describe how you “lay down your life for others” in
the daily-ness of your life.
3. Describe a time when you felt lost. Who found you
and brought you back?
Family and children’s question:
Talk about ways you have been a good shepherd for
others.

time. Any questions, call Ed or Laura at 234.6719.
There will be a meeting for those who would like to help work
the Lobster Bash. It will be this coming Tuesday, May 2, 7pm
in the Parish Center Meeting Room.
USED PALM—Through this weekend, we will have a
BLOOD DRIVE—Our parish will conduct a Blood Drive on
Thursday, May 18, in Walden Hall from 4pm to 9:30pm.
Please reserve the date. We do not realize all those we help
through our donation of blood. Our donation can be translated
into many uses. We know that it can only be manufactured by
one key person, us! There will be a sign up in the Church
lobby beginning this weekend. For more information, call Ed
at 366.1085. Please help give the gift of life. If you have never
donated platelets, ask one of the attendants about it the night
you donate blood.
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL—We ask our parishioners
for their help in assisting our parish reach and
hopefully exceed our assessment to the Appeal. With your
help, the work of the diocese continues in meeting the daily
needs and costs of operation of vital ministries that help
continue the work of evangelization in our diocese. We ask
everyone to make a pledge to the Appeal to help others and to
help our parish. Our parish’s assessment is $53,100 and we
are almost there! Once we make our parish goal, the parish
will realize at least $10,620 and more as we go over our
assessment.
MAINTENANCE COLLECTION—Over $40,387 has been
generously contributed to the maintenance and repairs of our
facilities. $49,655 has been spent to date on various maintenance
and replacement projects. We thank you for your
ongoing support of this parish project of continuing to update,
repair and beautify our parish facilities.
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE PARISH PLANT—As you
may have noticed, the Parking Lot was re-striped to designate
the parking spaces, all 220 of them, give or take one or two!
In addition to the areas reserved for handicap parking along
the southwest part of the parking lot, there are additional areas

Page 4
designated by the blue curb along the driveway. My understanding
was that in the past there were signs placed to
designate such areas for those who need easier access. Kindly
display your handicap sticker on your dashboard when using
these spaces. If you do not have a sticker, please respect those
who do have them.
The marble area of our Church Sanctuary was refinished this
past week. The entire area was ground down to make the tiles
smooth. Then there was a sealing process before there was a
final polishing to beautify our place of worship. With all the
rain this past week, the “leak” in the Church did not appear, so
it seems that the problem spot was located and sealed. It will
probably reappear when we patch the ceiling in the Church.
We have ordered a bulk shipment of fixtures to replace the
worn out florescent fixtures in Walden Hall. Progress!
JUSTICE & PEACE
Continuing from last week on Catholic social teaching.
John XXIII employed natural law in his attempt to address the
international issues. He was concerned with social and
economic justice and repeated the fundamental teachings of
his predecessors regarding the social nature of the person. By
coupling right language with natural law, he said the state has
the obligation to promote the common good. He put forth the
concept of the moral purposes that ought to govern human
affairs, from intrapersonal to international relations.
The human person had rights as well as duties. These rights
are universal and should not be violated. This is a call for self
and others. Individual rights must be in harmony with the
common good.
What does this all mean in terms of justice and peace? If a
society is to be well ordered and productive, it must lay down
the principle that every human being is a person. His nature is
endowed with intelligence and free will. He has rights and
obligations from and to society from his very nature. These
rights are universal. They cannot be violated and in any way
surrendered. Human rights are the standard against which
every social order is evaluated. To be continued...
Together we can make a difference
May 1 is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker.
May 3 is Sts. Philip and James and Independence Day in
Israel.
May 4-7 is El Cinco de Mayo in Mexico.
May 4 is a National Day of Prayer in USA.
MEN’S GATHERING
The next meeting of the Men’s Gathering will be this coming
Thursday, May 4, at 7:30pm in the Parish Center. We will
continue with our series on Spiritual Development. The topic will
be Foundation of the Spiritual Life. If you ever wondered or
thought about what it means to have a spiritual life but were not
sure, now would be a good time to attend. We urge all men to
attend, especially young men and men raising families. We start
at 7:30pm with refreshments and end promptly at 9pm.
UPDATE ON LENTEN PROJECT
We wish to thank all who participated in our parish program for
Habitat for Humanity. The total amount was $4,486. The money
will help to build a house for a needy family here on Long Island.
If anyone is interested in working on the construction of a habitat
home, please contact Ralph Molinaro at 724.2253. Your Justice
and Peace Committee thanks all.
STEWARDSHIP: A DISCIPLE’S RESPONSE
3 more Wednesdays, May 3 – May 17, 7:00 – 9:00pm.
Stewardship is an expression of discipleship. Beginning in
conversion, mature disciples make a conscious decision to follow
Jesus Christ as a way of life, grateful for what they have received
and eager to cultivate their gifts out of love for God and one
another. Through reading, reflection, lecture, prayer, and
discussion, participants will be introduced to the U. S. Bishops’
pastoral letter on stewardship, and come to understand more fully
that:
Stewardship is a necessary outcome of the faith we profess;
Disciples are called to be good stewards of our own vocations,
fulfilling roles and responsibilities to which the Lord has called
us;
The life of Jesus is the model for Christians filled with the will of
God;
Collaboration and cooperation with God in the works of creation
and redemption are hallmarks of stewardship;
Baptism calls us to share in the responsibility for the Church’s
mission;
Christian stewards gratefully receive, tend, and share God’s gifts
in justice and love.
Presenter: Dr. Joan. Pre-registration is appreciated, 234.5551.
NEEDS - Parish Outreach Pantry Shelves are
colorful, creative animals they made for our
families. We gave them out with our Easter Baskets. Thanks for
MILLION VOICES FOR DARFUR—A massive rally is taking
place today in Washington, DC. The ongoing genocide in the
Sudan is an evil to which we all need to respond. No government
seems willing or able to force Sudan to stop. Individuals have
taken a stance. Let your voice be heard.
