Given <strong>the</strong> auditory impressions mentioned above, we also expect that <strong>the</strong><br />

transitions into <strong>the</strong> closure <strong>of</strong> a labial-velar stop should correspond to those <strong>of</strong> a plain<br />

velar stop. There is some indication that this is <strong>the</strong> case.<br />

The F2 transition into <strong>the</strong> labial-velar stop shares <strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> labial<br />

<strong>and</strong> velar stops. The F2 transition into <strong>the</strong> labial stop drops in value, whereas <strong>the</strong> F2<br />

transition into <strong>the</strong> velar stop remains level. The F2 transition for <strong>the</strong> labial-velar stop<br />

exhibits a split just before closure, with one part dropping as in <strong>the</strong> labial stop <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r part remaining level as in <strong>the</strong> velar stop.<br />

The F4 transition into <strong>the</strong> labial-velar stop is similar to <strong>the</strong> velar one. The F4<br />

transition into <strong>the</strong> labial stop drops in value, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> F4 transition into <strong>the</strong> velar stop <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> labial-velar stop rises.<br />

The third issue is <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> voice onset time (VOT) for labial-velar stops.<br />

Both Maddieson (1993, for Ewe) <strong>and</strong> Connell (1994, for Ibibio) note that <strong>the</strong> VOT <strong>of</strong><br />
