TWO COLLECTIONS OF ORIGINAL DESIGNS FOR STAINED
GLASS
This special catalogue presents two unique collections of original designs
for stained glass. The first of these comprises two sets of designs from John
Hardman Studios, Birmingham: one containing fairly traditional designs from
the early twentieth century and the other more abstract material from the
later half of the century, particularly the 1960s and 70s. The second collection
consists of 17 designs associated with the Manchester-based artists William H
Cotten and Reuben Bennett, possibly made for W H and Harrington Limited,
particular designers and the location is given. When this is the case, these have been noted in the catalogue description.
corner. Numbered 24-24 on verso.
7. Three light gothic arched window, depicting Christ enthroned, with the Virgin before him and
censing angels to either side. A lower register of images depicts soldiers with a Union Jack covered
coffin and a priest performing mass, suggesting that the window had a memorial function. Image size
240x315mm, scale 1 inch to the foot. With paper stamp of the firm pasted over right hand corner
of image. Numbered 39-23 on verso. Undated, early 20 th century.
light has a heraldic shield above head of figure. Dated 1945 on verso. Image size 175x220mm, scale
1 inch to the foot. With paper stamp of the firm pasted on the back. The location and style suggests
that this may have been part of the same scheme as item no 13.
10. Window design for a church in Bethnal Green, intended for the second window from the east in
the south aisle. A three light gothic arched window incorporating St Peter, St John the Evangelist
Christ against a background of vines. Image size 220x205mm,
scale 1 inch to the foot. Undated. Glue residue surrounding
the image, itself unaffected, suggests that it was once
mounted differently.
12. Location given on verso as Darlington, with the name ‘Mr
Jameson’ written above. Consists of three round-headed
lights with no tracery. Central panel depicts St John
armoured saint bearing a sword and white flag. Each image
45x160mm, no scale given. Each numbered ‘5147 part’ on
verso, one marked ‘not done’. The location and style suggests
that these may have been part of the same scheme as item
no. 10. Undated. Mount slightly bumped.
14. Attributed to W.G. Edwards. Three light arched window
depicting Christ and the four patron saints of the UK:
George, Andrew, Patrick and David. Dedicated to those
presentation of this image suggests that it may be part of the same scheme as items 17 and 18.
17. Pen and ink on card with colour wash and black ink border. Rectangular window consisting
of a single light, depicting a queen kneeling with gifts before the throne of a king who appears
to bless her. Possibly the Queen of Sheba before Solomon. Image size 125x200mm, scale not
18. Pen and ink on card with colour wash and black ink border. Rectangular window consisting of a
single light, depicting St George. Image size 125x200mm, scale not given. Undated. The style and
presentation of this image suggests that it may be part of the same scheme as items 16 and 17.
(item 15)
19. Pair of designs for two two-light windows, one labelled ‘Gospel side’, featuring St Patrick and St George, the other ‘epistle side’,
featuring an Evangelist and an uncompleted sketch of St Cuthbert. Image size 155x255, scale 1 inch to the foot. Both undated. The
former is numbered 5746 on verso and appears to have been singed, particularly top left. The latter is numbered 5646 on verso and,
JOHN HARDMAN STUDIOS PART 2: CONTEMPORARY GLASS DESIGNS
A Collection of original designs for stained glass windows, dating mainly from the
sixties and seventies. 48 items of varying sizes
Designed by various artists for John Hardman Studios, Birmingham,
including Patrick A. Feeny. Some designs unattributed. The designs in
this collection, executed in a variety of media, range from original
presentation drawings in pen and ink mounted on card to rough
sketches and tracings. They are generally modern and abstract
in style, although there are some examples of more traditional
forms. Image size varies widely, from approximately 100x80mm to
560x300mm. A significant number are annotated in pencil or ink with
their proposed locations, including: St Thomas More Catholic Church
in Sheffield; The Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Erith, Kent;
The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Yardley Wood; The RAF Chapel,
Stanford. There are also a number of drawings of a proposed screen
for the ATV centre in Birmingham: one of the earliest commercial
television studios, which opened in 1970. As a whole, the collection
is a fascinating record of stained glass design in concentrating on two
decades of the twentieth century. (See cover design.)
addressed to W H Cotton at 454 Chester Road Manchester. This was at one time the address of W H and Harrington Limited, Stained Glass
