AT COLORADO: This Season (Fr.)—He is projected as an inside linebacker<br />

for his true freshman year in college.<br />

HIGH SCHOOL—A PrepStar All-American and All-West as well as a<br />

SuperPrep All-Far West selection as a senior, when he earned Ventura<br />

County and Marmonte League Defensive Player of the Year honors.<br />

(SuperPrep ranked him as the No. 77 player in California.) A two-time<br />

al-CIF, all-Marmonte League and all-Ventura County performer, earning<br />

the honors both as a junior and senior; he was a second-team<br />

all-league selection his sophomore year. As a senior, he racked up<br />

115 tackles (94 solo), with 12 for losses including three sacks, four<br />

hurries, two interceptions, two deflections and a forced fumble. As a<br />

junior, he was in on 85 tackles (54 solo), with 10 for losses and twoand-a-half<br />

sacks, and a cause d fumble. As a sophomore, playing<br />

defensive end, he had 40 tackles (25 solo), with 10 for losses including<br />

five sacks, and an interception he returned for a touchdown. A<br />

three-year starter on defense, he played some spot fullback during<br />

his career, mainly blocking in short yardage situations. Top games as<br />

a senior: in a 28-6 win over St. Bonaventure in the CIF championship<br />

game, he had 14 tackles, two for losses, and an interception; in a 38-<br />

7 win over Moorpark in the semifinal, he had 11 tackles, two for<br />

losses, and a pick; and in a 25-24 win over Hart, he had 12 tackles and<br />

a pass broken up. Westlake was 14-0 his senior season, winning the<br />

CIF Division IV title, and was 11-3 his junior year (reaching the finals)<br />

and 10-3 his sophomore year (semifinalist) under coach Jim Benkert.<br />

Also played some baseball as a prep.<br />

ACADEMICS—He is interested in business as his major at Colorado.<br />

PERSONAL—He was born February 1, 1986 in Santa Monica, Calif.<br />

Hobbies include snowboarding, cars and <strong>com</strong>puters, and he<br />

attained the Star rank in the Boy Scouts. A second cousin, Jentry<br />

Beckstead, is a relief pitcher (closer) in the Colorado Rockies farm<br />

system; he is on the Visalia roster for <strong>2004</strong> spring training (highest A<br />

ball) after recording 29 saves at Asheville last summer.<br />

AT COLORADO: This Season (Jr.)—Enters the fall tied for the top<br />

spot at the tight tackle position. At 300 pounds, he’s added 20<br />

pounds of muscle to his frame since the beginning of last season.<br />

2003 (Soph.)—He started the first four games of the year at tight<br />

tackle, and eventually saw action on the split side as well in playing<br />

in 11 games overall (four total starts). He graded out to 68.2 percent<br />

for the year for 343 snaps from scrimmage, with one knockdown<br />

block and one touchdown block; he allowed nine pressures, threeand-a-half<br />

quarterback sacks and was called for two penalties. His<br />

high game grade was 86.7 against Kansas (15 snaps, 13 plus-plays),<br />

followed by 85.0 against Iowa State (20-17). He played an additional<br />

13 snaps on special teams (field goal and PAT unit).<br />

2002 (Fr.-RS) —He was the backup at the split-side tackle position<br />

for the season, and saw action in six games, including the Alamo<br />

Bowl (no starts). He was in for 24 snaps from scrimmage in the five<br />

regular season games (grading out with 17 plus plays and seven<br />

minus), and added about a dozen more in the bowl game against<br />

Wisconsin. He played at around 270 pounds as a redshirt frosh.<br />

2001 (Fr.)—Redshirted; practiced the entire year on the offensive<br />

line, mainly at tackle.<br />

HIGH SCHOOL—As a senior, he earned pre- and postseason<br />

PrepStar All-American honors, and was one of 18 offensive linemen<br />

to earn mention on the Houston Chronicle Texas Top 100 list. He was<br />

named to the all-Southwest teams by both Prep Football Report (the<br />

No. 81 player overall) and SuperPrep (No. 85). PrepStar also ranked<br />

him as the No. 12 offensive lineman in the Midlands, while SuperPrep<br />

tabbed him as the No. 43 player in the state of Texas in the preseason.<br />

He also earned all-state, all-area and all-district honors as a<br />

senior, when he graded out to better than 90 percent on his assignments,<br />

did not allow a quarterback sack and was called for just one<br />

penalty in making 55 pancake blocks. He blocked for tailback Mark<br />

Pierce, a 2,000-plus yard runner who is headed for Arkansas. Head<br />

coach at Weatherford was Mike Sneed. He transferred to<br />

Weatherford from Arlington Heights (Fort Worth) High after his<br />

junior year; he had started at offensive tackle as both a junior<br />

(registering 46 pancakes) and a sophomore (30). He did not allow a<br />

sack as a junior and was called for only two penalties in being named<br />

all-state and all-district, only one of three underclassmen selected to<br />

the either team.<br />

ACADEMICS— He is majoring in history at Colorado. He owned a 3.0<br />

grade point average and was an honor roll student in high school.<br />

PERSONAL— Born April 27, 1983 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was<br />

selected for the United States Olympic Academy (on leadership and<br />

athletic ability) to teach individuals to be leaders on and off the playing<br />

field and to help bring back to your state the knowledge for<br />

programs to help your school be successful. A cousin (Kerry Knox)<br />

played baseball at Texas Christian and was drafted by the San Diego<br />

Padres. Hobbies include hunting and fishing. He is also a member of<br />

FFA (Future Farmers Association), Young Life, the Link Program (for<br />

handicapped children), and has worked extensively with the Special<br />

Olympics. He was the second player to <strong>com</strong>mit to CU for the 2001<br />

class, doing so less than two weeks after attending the 2000 Buffalo<br />

Football Technique School.
