DR. SOURAV PODDAR Team Physician Dr. Sourav Poddar is his fifth year working with the CU athletic program as a team physician, his fourth with the football program. He is also directing the Optimum Performance Team in its first year. Poddar, 32, is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and is on staff at the CU Sports Medicine Clinic as well as the University Medicine-Westminster. He is also the associate director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the UCHSC. He is board certified in family practice, with a CAQ certificate in sports medicine. His specific areas of medical interest are sports medicine, heat illnesses and concussions. He graduated from Rice University in 1993 with a degree in biochemistry, and then completed medical school at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 1997. At Rice, he was a member of the soccer team. Sourav completed his residency in family practice at the UCHSC- Rose in Denver (he was chief resident during his third year in residency), and subsequently completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Colorado, working with former CU team physician Rob Loeffler. Born April 15, 1972 in Bombay, India, his family moved to the United States when he was a two-year old; he graduated from Clear Lake High School in Houston, where he lettered in soccer. He is married to the former Emily Aldeen. (His name is pronounced Shuh-rav Poe-dar.) DR. REED BARTZ Team Physician Dr. Reed Bartz is in his second year as a Colorado team physician, as he joined the Buff sports medicine staff of physicians in July 2003. Bartz, 36, comes to CU from the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo. He joined the CU Sports Medicine program, which is coordinated by the Health Sciences Center in Denver. Bartz, along with Eric McCarty, share offices in both Boulder and Denver. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1990 in economics from Southern Methodist University, where he was a member of the baseball team, and received his M.D. from the University of Texas in 1994. He performed his orthopedic residency at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and then received a sports medicine fellowship at Steadman-Hawkins Clinic. During his residency and fellowship, he worked with baseball’s Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies, as well as the NFL’s Denver Broncos. He has had articles published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has won several research awards, including the Paul Harrington Award, the Herodicus Society Award, and the Houston Orthopedic Society Research Award. Born April 2, 1968 in Houston, Texas, he graduated from Houston’s St. John’s High School in 1986, where he lettered in football, baseball and tennis. He is married to the former Jennifer Kristen Vaughan, a Boulder native, and the couple has three children, daughters Claire (7) and Kassie (3), and son Jay (6). 448 DR. PETER EWING Team Physician Emeritus Dr. Peter Ewing is in his 32nd season as CU’s team physician, though in recent years he has owned “emeritus” status and is more or less activated upon request. Ewing attended most football practices and took care of general illness and orthopedic screening for years, and remains an active participant on game days. In 2001, he was presented with the Honorary “C” Club Award for his long-time association with the Buffaloes. He is a member of the Dakota Ridge Medical Center staff in Boulder. Born in Portchester, N.Y., Ewing graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1965 with a bachelor of art degree in modern language. He graduated from the Albany Medical College, in Albany, N.Y., in 1969. He first came to Boulder as an intern in the CU-Denver Family Residency program, and has practiced in Boulder since 1972. He is married (Mary Jean) and is the father of two children. GREG FINNEGAN SPEED-STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Director of Speed-Strength & Conditioning Greg Finnegan is in his second year as Colorado’s director of speed-strength and conditioning, joining the Buffalo staff on May 28, 2003 after serving five years as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League. Finnegan, 35, is no stranger to college athletics, as prior to working five seasons with the Jaguars, he spent two-and-a-half years as the director of Speed, Strength & Conditioning at Boston College. Prior to be named as BC’s top man, he was an assistant at both BC (six months) and Kansas State (two years). At Jacksonville, he performed a variety of duties, including developing and implementing strength, speed and conditioning programs; research methods to improve all areas of the program (speed, strength, power, balance, agility, flexibility, conditioning, supplementation and injury prevention), consult and advise the athletes on proper nutrition, and developing instructional methods of teaching technique. He also dabbled a bit in coaching, assisting the defensive staff in breaking down opponent film and helping the defensive line coach in practice. He was on the staff of the ’99 Jaguar team that posted a 14-2 regular season record and advanced to the AFC Championship game. At Boston College, he oversaw the conditioning programs for 33 varsity teams, one of the largest Division I-A programs on the East Coast. Finnegan has worked with some of the best football players in the country, including former Buffaloes Deon Figures, Chris Hudson and Chris Naeole, as well as Tony Boselli, Mark Brunell, Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor, all while with the Jaguars. He earned bachelor’s degree in 1992 from Cornell University, where he was the first-team all-Ivy League center in both 1989 and 1990 and team captain his senior season in 1991. He received his master’s from Kansas State in 1994 in exercise physiology, and it was in Manhattan where he began his career as a graduate teaching assistant. While finishing his degree at Cornell, he also had six months of experience as a student athletic trainer, assisting with injury rehabilitation and performing a research study on nutritional supplements. Academically, he was a four-time member of the Deans’ List, twice at both Cornell and Kansas State, and had earned an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy out of high school. He is also a published writer, authoring several articles on his profession in strength and conditioning trade publications. Born February 21, 1969 in Toledo, Ohio, he is married to the former Lyn Kendrick and is the father of four, daughter Abigail (9) and sons Benjamin (7), William (4) and Nathaniel (1). TRAVIS REUST Assistant Speed-Strength & Conditioning Coach Travis Reust is in his third year as an assistant speed-strength and conditioning coach on the Colorado staff, coming on board in time for football two-a-days in August 2002. He coordinates the training programs for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, in addition to men’s and women’s golf and women’s tennis. He also assists with the football program. Reust, 34, came to Colorado from fellow Big 12 Conference school Oklahoma State, where he had worked one year as a graduate assistant in the Cowboys’ strength and conditioning operation. Prior to heading to OSU, he spent four years as the head strength and conditioning coordinator at East Central University (Ada, Okla.). He also worked as an assistant coach for all four years, tutoring the defensive tackles. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education (exercise science) in 2000 from ECU, where he also earned his master’s in education (sports 449 administration) two years later. His roots at ECU date back to 1994, when he was the director of all personal trainers at the school’s Wellness Center. Born March 9, 1970 in Oklahoma City, he graduated from Moore (Okla.) High School in 1988. Following high school, he was a competitive body builder for six years as well as a personal trainer. He is married to the former Brooke Crawford, and the couple has two children, daughter Kassidy (5) and son Kaden (3). SARAH RAMEY Assistant Speed-Strength & Conditioning Coach Sarah Ramey is in her second year as an assistant speed-strength and conditioning coach on the Colorado staff, coming to CU in July 2003 from the staff at Kansas State University. At Colorado, she is responsible for the training regimens for volleyball, soccer and men’s and women’s skiing. Ramey, 24, worked one year as a graduate assistant at Kansas State, which followed a five-month internship with Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning in Winchester, Mass. She earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Wichita State in May 2002, graduating with an impressive 3.83 grade point average. She began worked toward her master’s in kinesiology at Kansas State, and has completed over half of the work required is anticipating earned the degree in December 2003. At Wichita State, she lettered three times in volleyball playing middle blocker and the right side, earning the Missouri Valley Conference’s Academic Excellence Award in 2000. She developed an interest in strength and conditioning during her college days as an athlete and began pursuit of a career in the field early in her career. Born May 14, 1980 in Sterling, Colo., she graduated from Andover (Kan.) High School, where she lettered in volleyball and basketball. She is single. VERNON STEPHENS Assistant Speed-Strength & Conditioning Coach Vernon Stephens is in his second season on the Colorado speed-strength and conditioning staff, joining the department on September 1, 2003. He is responsible for working with both football as well as the men’s and women’s cross country and track teams. Stephens, 29, came to Colorado from his alma mater, North Florida, where he started the Division II school’s strength and conditioning program there in 1999 for the Ospreys’ 14 programs and 230 student-athletes. He spent two off seasons with the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars as a part-time strength coach under Jerry Palmieri in 2002 and Mark Asanovich in 2003. This is where he first met CU’s strength coach Greg Finnegan, as he was an assistant in ’02 when Stephens first worked with the NFL club. He graduated from the University of North Florida in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science. While at UNF, he was an undergraduate member of Sigma Upsilon chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Born November 30, 1974 in Jacksonville, Fla., he graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School in 1992, where he lettered three times in basketball. During his college days, he was a youth Sunday School Leader at the Westside Baptist Church. His hobbies include eating out, weightlifting, watching NBA and NFL games, cooking and watching the Food Network. He married the former Tali Shepherd this past May 29.
